December 16, 2018 3rd Sunday of Advent St. Theresa, Gonzales...December 18 St. John the Evangelist December 19 In order to encourage larger attendance for our Advent Penance gatherings, individual Confessions will begin immediately at 6:30 p.m. and there will be no preliminary communal prayer service. We do hope to have a large number of area parishioners join us for each of the two remaining sessions, but we will have several priests available at each location and the lines should move quickly. Please take advantage of our normal Confession times or join us for any of the two remaining weeknight sessions. ST. Page 3 Clergy Corner Earlier this month we began our annual gatherings for Advent group Confessions. Our remaining group Confessions will be held this Tuesday, December 18, at St. Theresa and this Wednesday, December 19, here at St. John the Evangelist. Both Confession sessions will begin at 6:30 PM. Even though we hope to have a large number of penitents for each evening, the Confession lines should move quickly because we will have several priests available for the two sessions. In case you cannot make either of the two services, please remember that individual Confessions are offered here at St. John every weekday morning at 8:15 AM, just prior to the 8:30 AM Mass. Also the Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:00 until 4:00 PM. We place all this emphasis on the sacrament of Reconciliation during Advent for one simple reason. The four weeks of Advent are set aside each year by our Church so that we might prepare ourselves to receive the Lord Jesus ever more fully into our lives at Christmas. And what better way could there be to prepare for the coming Lord other than having our sins forgiven through this special Sacrament? Now I realize listening to ourselves say our sins out loud in the Sacrament of Confession can be quite embarrassing, if not downright nerve wracking. But I ask you to consider one basic point. The time to feel ashamed, guilty, embarrassed, nervous and defiled should be when we are committing our sin. If we faced these feelings then, maybe we would stop the sin before we ever put it into action. In contrast, when we approach Confession we should see ourselves as special, lovable and forgivable. After all, that is how God sees us and that is why He gave us this beautiful Sacrament. Our next ladies retreat will not be held until this summer, but our next men s retreat will be offered from Thursday evening, February 7th until 11:30 Mass on Sunday, February 10th. We encourage you to join us for what we found to be a wonderful experience.
