Men of the Parish..Mark your calendars IGNITE 2019 SATURDAY, MARCH 30TH AT THE SRC Arena and Event Center. Theme: EXULT: oh God be merciful to me a Sinner. Register on line at www.ignitecatholicmen.org Jesus wants us to follow him, little by little. With His grace we will become faithful disciples. Looking back at our life, we may recognize a particular person or specific experience that caused us to make a significant change or to go in a different direction than we would other- wise. Hopefully, the change was good; hopefully it caused us to think bigger, do better things, use our talents in ways that we didn t imagine possible. This is what happens in today s readings, Isaiah is called by God to be his prophet. In the beginning, however, Isaiah does not feel worthy to be in God s presence, saying, I am doomed! But by the end of the reading, Isaiah is ready; Here I am, he says, send me. It is a similar experience for Simon in today s Gospel. Simon and his companions are getting out of their boats and washing their nets, finished for the night. Yet by the end, everything has changed. The same fishermen have abandoned their boats, left everything and followed Jesus. What a turnaround! Jesus will meet us where we are. Little by little, he will invite us to take the next step toward becoming faithful disciples. Our efforts without him will fail. We may work hard, but our catch will be minimal to nothing. With the Lord, however, saying yes little by little, our lives will change. Our efforts will bear fruit. Our catch will be overflowing. NEW OFFICE HOURS AT THE RECTORY. ON MONDAYS THE RECTORY OFFICE WILL OPEN AT 10:30 A.M. AND CLOSE AT 3:30 PM.. TUESDAY THRU FRIDAY OFFICE HOURS WILL BE 8:30A.M. TO 3:30 P.M.. THANK YOU FOR TAKING NOTE! The late George Burns once said, The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible. Remember God loves YOU and so do I! Page Five Dear Padre, What is transubstantiation? At the beginning of the Christian community, preachers and poets created magnificent descriptions of the Eucharist using images from the Jewish Scriptures as well as from the surrounding folklores. As Christianity spread throughout the centuries, especially in the developing European monasteries and universities, theologians became more concerned both with defining the Eucharist more precisely and describing more exactly the changes that occur when the words of the priest are spoken over the bread and wine. In the mid-sixteenth century, the Council of Trent, under the pressure of various misunderstandings and disagreements, articulated the doctrine we now know as transubstantiation. This doctrine, founded in the philosophy of Aristotle and clarified by St. Thomas Aquinas, seeks to explain without ambiguity that the Eucharist is a substantial change of bread and wine. The very substance the breadness and the wineness of the gifts is transformed. Even though it looks and tastes like bread and wine, it no longer is; only the physical attributes remain. Bread and wine are now something new: the living Body and Blood of Christ. The explanation offered by the doctrine of transubstantiation is still helpful. The next challenge lies in how to take this truth about the Real Presence of Christ and make it come alive in the hearts and lives of Christians through vibrant descriptions in creative preaching and catechesis. Pope Francis Speaks to FAMILIES!! The Freedom to Say Yes A Good mother...helps (her children) to make definitive decisions with freedom. This is not easy, but a mother knows how to do it. But what does freedom mean? It is certainly not doing what ever you want, allowing yourself to be dominated by the passions, to pass from one experience to another without discernment, to follow the fashions of the day; freedom does not mean, so to speak, throwing everything that you don t like out the window. No, that is not freedom! Freedom is given to us so that we know how to make good decisions in life! Mary as a good mother teaches us to be, like her, capable of making definitive, decisions; definitive choices, at the moment in time controlled by, so to speak, a philosophy of the provisional. She helps us to make those definitive decisions in the full freedom with which she said yes to the plan God had for her life. So..Shall We Dance?
