Noah Bushelli St. Philip Antiochian Orthodox Church Souderton, PA) Master, Fathers, Mothers, Brothers & Sisters, Bless! This is the day which the Lord has made! I hope you are encouraged in your generosity and charity by the following paragraph by St. Theophan (_Thoughts for Each Day of the Year, 2010, St. Herman of Alaska Press, Platina, CA, 157-158) about our Lord s words to the Apostles you give them something to eat, that we are reading today, the Eighth Sunday of Matthew. Before the miraculous feeding of the Five Thousand, the Lord s disciples wanted the people to be sent away, but the Lord said to them, they need not depart, give ye them to eat. Let us learn this saying, and each time the enemy suggests to us to refuse someone who asks for something, let us say on behalf of the Lord, they need not depart, give ye them to eat, and let us give them whatever we find at hand. The enemy destroys the desire to offer charity, and suggests that perhaps the asker is not worthy of alms. But the Lord did not investigate the worthiness of those who were sitting there. He served everyone equally, while, of course, not everyone was equally devoted to Him. Perhaps even those who later cried, Crucify Him! were there. Such is God s overall Providence of us: He maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. Grateful to be yours in Christ, + Fr. Noah
Epistle Priest: Let us attend. Reader: The Lord will give strength unto His People. Verse: Bring unto the Lord, ye sons of God; bring unto the Lord glory and honor! Priest: Wisdom. Reader: The Reading is taken from The Holy Apostle Paul s First Epistle to the Corinthians (1:10 17) Priest: Let us attend. BRETHREN, I beseech you, by the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing and that there be no schisms among you, but that you be perfected together in the same mind and in the same resolve. For it has been indicated to me concerning you, my brethren, by those who are of the household of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now what I mean is this; that each one of you says, I am for Paul, or I am for Apollos, or I am for Cephas, or I am for Christ ; is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized into the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaios; lest anyone should say that you were baptized into my name. And I baptized also the household of Stephanas; other than that, I do not know whether I baptized any other. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in wisdom of words, lest the Cross of Christ should be made void. + + + Over + + +
Holy Gospel The reading is taken from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew (14:14 22) AT THAT TIME, when Jesus went ashore He saw a great throng; and He had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves. Jesus said, They need not go away; you give them something to eat. They said to Him, We have only five loaves here and two fish. And He said, Bring them here to Me. Then He ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish He looked up to Heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds. May God Be With You!
