Perhaps some of our goals as a church ought to be addressing some of these world-wide problems. I notice that they are lacking in our goals. Perhaps it is time to enlarge our goals! After all, aren t Christ s followers to have their hearts broken by the things that break the heart of God? It might not be world hunger around which we will marshal our energies, but what then will it be? Maybe you have an idea for a particular need that should be listed as among our most high-priority goals. If you have the ideas, insights, or motivation to work on some chronic community or world needs with your church family, then please inform Pastor Ray or any of our Elders. Dove News Page 3 PRAER MINISTR B MARGE PICKEL THE PRAER MINISTR - PRAER RELEASES GOD S POWER The PRAER of a righteous man is powerful and effective. (James 5:16) How important do you think PRAER is to the ministries in Avondale Presbyterian Church? PRAER said C. Samuel Storms, in and of itself possesses no power. ou might think, I do not understand that statement. I thought PRAER was very powerful, but Storm goes on to say, PRAER is powerful because God is powerful, and PRAER is the means through which the divine power is released and channeled into our lives. In other words, all the power in PRAER is really God s power activated by PRAER. When we PRA for another person or for a situation, it goes heavenward, and the power of God moves from Him to the ones or situations you PRAED for. When the Bible says PRAER.is powerful and effective it means God acts powerfully and effectively through the PRAERS of His people. R. A. Torrey, enthralled by the enormity of this power, states PRAER is the key that unlocks all the storehouses of God s infinite grace and power. PRAER can do anything that God can do. PRAER is the ultimate source of power, because it is the power of Almighty God. This power is available to the humblest Christian. How important do you think PRAER is to the life of the Avondale Presbyterian Church; to our Pastor; our Leadership; to our Sunday School; our outh Leaders; to the outreach in our community; to families; to our children and youth; to me as an individual. Avondale Presbyterian Church has made PRAER a priority to the life of the Church. There are many opportunities for PRAER ---our Sunday Worship, our Tuesday Praise and Prayer Service; intentional, daily, personal devotions; small groups. I have heard some say that they do not know what to PRA or how to PRA. A couple of Sundays ago, Pastor Ray told us that the early Church used the Book of Psalms as their PRAER book and their hymn book. ou can personalize them. The Message, written by Eugene Peterson has translated the Bible in more understandable text. Also, there are Prayer Cards for various subjects available at the desks in the lobbies. PRAER is just like sitting down and talking with a friend. It is a two way conversation. We need to stop at times and listen to what God is saying and how He is answering our requests. There are a number of ways here at APC that you can engage others to join you in praying for a friend, a relative, a situation or for yourself. We have: (a) Electronic Prayer Chain. ou call or E-mail Min Pusey and she will activate the chain which includes many of our church members. Her e-mail address is: fpusey1@comcast.net. Her phone #610-869-9464. (b) Telephone Prayer Chain. ou can call Barbara Rosazza at 610-268-2322 and she sends it out. (c) Fill out a blue Prayer Card, found in the pews, and place in the basket outside the Sanctuary. The prayers on the blue cards are prayed over every Tuesday evening at the Praise and Prayer Service. (d) I (Marge Pickel) prepare a weekly Prayer Insert in which all requests are listed. They will remain on the list for TWO WEEKS. If you want them to remain on the list a while longer, ask Min, Barbara or myself. Up-date your requests. People praying want to know what happened as a result of prayer. Answers to prayers are crucial to the Prayer Ministry. REMEMBER, PRAER IS THE POWER OF GOD AND IS NEEDED IN EVER MINISTR AT AVONDALE PRESBTERIAN CHURCH! (Some thoughts were taken from Love to Pray, The Difference Prayer Makes, by Dr. Alvin J. VanderGreiend) KID S PRAER MINISTR Parents, encourage your children to go to the Prayer Room for Kids in the Quarry, the first Sunday of each month after the 10 am service. Julie Swisher and Angela Rupard have faithfully been waiting for kids to come and be prayed for. We need to teach our kids about the power of prayer and pray that God will give them a heart for prayer. Kids age three are not too young to understand prayer. As adults, we look to God to sustain us in our good and in our troubled times. We need to teach our kids young and old the value of knowing of God s love and that He is always there for us. We just need to call His name. The Bridge Food & Clothing Bank needs non-perishable food items especially at this time of the year. This is a time of year when donations decrease. Please use our beautiful new and very large wooden box in the main lobby to regularly donate non-perishable food items. Whatever is placed inside of that box is taken to the Bridge almost weekly. Any message requests or suggestions for our changeable sign in front of the church, please submit to Peggy Watkins 30 days in advance. Thank you all! APC
Dove News Page 5 The Musician s Corner Hello all. Well it s September once again. The year has just flown by. As we move into September it will be good to get back in the swing of things. Our adult Choir will be resuming our rehearsals once again on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 7:30 pm in our Music Room. The choir Kickoff gettogether will be on September 2, 2010,Thursday evening at 6 pm and will held at the home of Bob and Barbara Hart. This is a time when the entire Music Department gets together for a good time and share some fantastic dishes prepared by some of our Music team members. Also, our updated Choir folders / music will be handed out for our first (PRE) rehearsal and update for the last part of the 2010 calendar year. Also, we have started our first men s ensemble/quartet group as well on August 26, 2010. This I m told is a first for APC. It will be great to see this new addition to our Musical Family blossom as we begin to develop what God has blessed each member of our group with. The members so far are: Dave Schramm, Phil Hertzog, Ross Lloyd, James Faulkner, Bob Hart and yours truly. Please pray for us as we move into this area of ministry. On another note, We will be saying goodbye to Kathy Coyle, our Church secretary. Kathy is leaving APC to take on a full-time position in the health field. We will miss you Kathy very much. ou have blest us in so many ways and have been an integral part of our ministry in all facets at APC. We all wish you the very best that God has for you, and will continue to think of you often. May God bless you as you continue to move in His will for your life. Well that about wraps it up for now. Let s all continue to pray believing for Gods direction and leading as the scripture says, Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. Dove News Page 6 BAZAAR 2010 UPDATE WOW SUMMER IS COMING TO A CLOSE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN WE ARE LOOKING AT TWO AND ONE HALF MONTHS TILL OUR THIRD ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR. Although Tuesday morning workshops have begun, we now need to get in full swing with planning and working on at-home workshops and adding an evening workshop for those wishing to get together and showing their talent and helping hands. We are still looking for others who will host a small group in their homes to create a craft, needlework or sewn item that can be a part of our presentation. Men, if you have a woodworking skill and can donate your talents, we would appreciate any items you could donate. Bazaar Planning Meetings are held monthly on Monday Nights in Room 102 (dates will be posted in the weekly bulletin and announced in church). Applications have been sent out to many vendors and of this date we have about ten vendors who have applied and paid for their space. If you know of anyone who is interested in joining us this year, please contact Judy oung or Kathy Barto. We will limit the number of vendors showing the same product and are always looking for new and unique items. Our Treasury Room as well as our White Elephant Tables are winners for Avondale Presbyterian Church We hope to expand our selections this year. So if you have tucked away items that you haven t used, we welcome all donations. If you or anyone you may know are sizing down, cleaning out, or redecorating, please know that we can take items in and store them now. We won t have to wait till November to get them. This year we are seeking gently used or never used items for the Treasury room. This will include items of china, pottery, crystal, linens, pictures, lamps, silver, furniture, household items, etc. We will also have a book corner that will take your novels and children s books. Keep looking around your house for your hidden treasures we will be happy to pick them up, if necessary. The Bazaar is being held one week earlier this year so as not to compete with the busy Thanksgiving season. The scheduled dates are Friday night, November 12 and Saturday, November 13. We plan to continue having the Christmas Shop set up in the lower lobby on Saturdays after the bazaar till the week before Christmas. We hope to have our wonderful Hannah Circle provide the delicious luncheon again this year. They are requesting help for the Friday night light supper as most of the Hannah Circle girls work during the day. Money donations toward the food are always appreciated. The Vermont Cheese was sold out last year even though we ordered three rounds. This year we will have four rounds for sale so no one will miss out on this treat. Pecans will be available, both whole and chopped pieces, for your holiday baking. The music that was provided during the entire Bazaar last year put everyone attending in a festive mood Ginny Peck is in charge of scheduling the music. Contact her if you are interested in letting your musical talent be heard.
Dove News Page 7 People will be needed to help with promotions, advertising, distribution of signs, contacting businesses in the area, preparing baked goods, helping the Hannah Circle with food preparation, manning tables at the Bazaar, security, parking, and many other jobs. Last year s success was due to the many helping hands that volunteered their time and talent. This is a large project that cannot be done by a few. Volunteers needed at the Spanish Health Ministry On Friday mornings this school year, volunteers are needed to help with childcare for 4 preschool children and one newborn during the women s Bible Study held at the Spanish Health Ministry office in Kennett Square. There may also be needs to help with transportation to and from the office. Dove News Page 8 Adult Sunday School Announcements The Prayer Action Team is offering, again this fall, the course When God s People Pray. It begins on Sunday, September 19th, 2010 during the Sunday School hour at 9:45 in Room 106. Adult Sunday School, room 103 facilitated by Will Wallace, will begin on September 19th by viewing the PBS film Peter & Paul And The Christian Revolution. The documentary uses Scripture, dramatic reenactments, and commentary to explore how these two men led the miracle of the early church. I met so many wonderful people and felt truly blessed coming to work every day. I have never felt so at peace and so truly blessed with a job as I did here; it didn t even feel like work. When I started at APC, I knew it was where God wanted me to be. The same goes for my new endeavor; I truly felt God s hand in every step for that, I am truly thankful! Dove News Page 10 Session Highlights from July/August meeting... Finalized Ministry Team Assignments among the Elders. Discussed Sunday School and returning to two worship gatherings. We will begin Sunday School with a Family Fun Time on September 12 which will begin at 10:00 AM in the sanctuary. The 8:30 and 11:00 AM worship pattern will begin again on that Sunday as well. Phil Hertzog reported on the June Presbytery meeting held at First, Phoenixville. Discussed the renting of the Great Hall by groups with possibly controversial agendas. We will continue to analyze. Red Cross Blood Drive at APC Monday, October 4th, 2010 1 7 pm MINI Praise & Prayer Every Tuesday evening 7 8 pm Let the Holy Spirit lead you! Terrific Tuesdays will be held every Tuesday evening (during Praise & Prayer) with games and snacks. Parents are encouraged to attend Praise & Prayer in the Sanctuary while their children attend Mini Kingdom Kids. Times are 6:45 8:15 pm. Open to ALL for fun, fellowship and recreation!
