Transcription:

October 14, 2018 9:00 am WELCOME CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Let us come before God, seeking forgiveness and life. (Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination) Steadfast and saving God, have mercy on us. In so many ways we cause or suffer brokenness: envy, ambition, conflict, boasting, hard hearts, lashing tongues, neglect of our neighbor s needs. In your compassion, forgive our sins and heal our hurts. Bring forth from us a harvest of righteousness, the fruits of gentleness and peace, the sheaves of love and joy in your presence; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen God's love in Christ is healing balm for your wounds. In the name of + Jesus, the Son of God, receive mercy and find grace in your time of need. Because of his death and resurrection, your transgressions are forgiven. Amen 1

PROCESSIONAL HYMN Gather Us In GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 2

KYRIE ( Lord, Have Mercy ) 34

HYMN OF PRAISE Worthy is Christ... PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Almighty and ever-living God, increase in us your gift of faith, that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to what lies ahead, we may follow the way of your commandments and receive the crown of everlasting joy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen 4

FIRST READING Amos 5:6-7, 10-15 6 Seek the LORD and live, or he will sweep through the house of Joseph like a fire; it will devour, and Bethel will have no one to quench it. 7 You who turn justice into bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground 10 you hate the one who reproves in court and despise him who tells the truth. 11 You trample on the poor and force him to give you grain. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, you will not live in them; though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink their wine. 12 For I know Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God. how many are your offenses and how great your sins. You oppress the righteous and take bribes and you deprive the poor of justice in the courts. 13 Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet in such times, for the times are evil. 14 Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. 15 Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph. SECOND READING Hebrews 4:12-16 12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God. God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are yet was without sin. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. ALLELUIA VERSE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 10:17-31 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 10 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. Good teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 18 Why do you call me good? Jesus answered. No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother. 20 Teacher, he declared, all these I have kept since I was a boy. 21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. One thing you lack, he said. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. 22 At this the man s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 5

25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. 26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, Who then can be saved? 27 Jesus looked at them and said, With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. 28 Peter said to him, We have left everything to follow you! 29 I tell you the truth, Jesus replied, no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. CHILDREN S MESSAGE HYMN OF THE DAY God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending SERMON APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen 6

PRAYERS (response to each petition:) Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. SHARING OF THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. OFFERING Come, Thou Fount Of Every Blessing (Cantate Choir) Come, thou Fount of ev'ry blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. While the hope of endless glory fills my heart with joy and love, teach me ever to adore thee; may I still thy goodness prove. Here I raise my Ebenezer: "Hither by thy help I've come"; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand'ring from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood. Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be; let that grace now like a fetter bind my wand'ring heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it; prone to leave the God I love. Here's my heart, oh, take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above. OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray. God of majesty, in your might you have created all things, and you entrust to our care what you have made. Receive our offerings, and make them a sign of our dedication to provide for the needs of all people in the name of the one who sustains all things by his word, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Let us approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Thanks and praise to you, heavenly Father, for the glorious resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord; for he is the Lamb of God, who was offered for us and has taken away the sins of the world. By his death, he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again, he has restored us to everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify your holy name, singing: 7

SANCTUS ( Holy, holy, holy ) WORDS OF INSTITUTION As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen AGNUS DEI ( Lamb of God ) 8

Scripture says, Whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26. Martin Luther s Small Catechism says, Holy Communion is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christians to eat and drink. All baptized communion are invited to come to the table and receive a blessing. As you approach the table down the aisles, receive an empty cup from the cart. Proceed to the left or the right and gather around the altar. After each gathered group has communed, they are dismissed in peace. As you return to your seat down the side aisles, place your cup in the racks on the tables to your left or right. Non-alcoholic wine is offered in pre-filled cups for those who cannot drink alcohol. These cups are marked in the rack. prefer this option. COMMUNION SONGS Change My Heart, O God (sing twice) 9

Seek Ye First (sing stanzas 1-2; repeat stanza 1 with women singing descant) 10

We Remember You (sing twice) DISMISSAL The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen and keep us in his grace. Amen THANKSGIVING PRAYER O God, we give you thanks that you have set before us this feast, the body and blood of your Son. By your Spirit strengthen us to serve all in need and to give ourselves away as bread for the hungry, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen BENEDICTION The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Go in peace. Christ lives in you. Thanks be to God. 11
