All-Age Christingle Service Sunday 4 February 2018 Christ the Light of the World The service is led by Revd Canon Jonathan Baker, Ben Merrell, and the All-Age team Welcome and Notices All people of the world, Jesus is our light Come, worship and adore him. Stand Hymn Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart, be all else but naught to me, save that thou art; be thou my best thought in the day and the night, both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light. Be thou my wisdom be thou my true word, be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord be thou my great Father, and I thy true Son, be thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one. Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might, be thou my soul s shelter, be thou my strong tower: O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power. Riches I heed not, nor man s empty praise be thou mine inheritance now and always; be thou and thou only the first in my heart; O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art. 1 We Gather Together High King of heaven, thou heaven s bright Sun; O grant me its joys after victory is won; great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all. Words: Irish, c 8th Century, tr Mary Byrne Tune: SLANE

We Confess Our Sins Sit or Kneel Christ the light of the world has come to dispel the darkness of our hearts. In his light let us examine ourselves and confess our sins. Silence We have not always worshipped God, our creator. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. We have not always followed Christ, our Saviour. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. We have not always trusted in the Spirit, our guide. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Words of forgiveness then follow: May the God of love bring you back to himself forgive you your sins, and assure you of his eternal love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Stand Colours of day dawn into the mind, The sun has come up, the night is behind. Go down in the city, into the street, And let s give the message to the people we meet. We Praise God Together 2

So light up the fire and let the flame burn, Open the door, let Jesus return. Take seeds of His Spirit, let the fruit grow, Tell the people of Jesus, let His love show. Go through the park, on into the town; The sun still shines on, it never goes down. The light of the world is risen again; The people of darkness are needing a friend. So light up the fire and let the flame burn. Open your eyes, look into the sky, The darkness has come, the sun came to die. The evening draws on, the sun disappears, But Jesus is living, His Spirit is near. So light up the fire and let the flame burn. Sue McClellan, John Pac, Keith Ryecroft. Copyright Light of the world, you stepped down into darkness Opened my eyes, let me see. Beauty that made this heart adore you Hope of a life spent with you 1974 Kingsway s Thankyou Music. King of all days, oh, so highly exalted Glorious in heaven above Humbly you came to the earth you created All for love's sake became poor. And here I am to worship, here I am to bow down, Here I am to say that you're my God. You're altogether lovely, altogether worthy Altogether wonderful to me I'll never know how much it cost To see my sin upon that cross I'll never know how much it cost To see my sin upon that cross X 2 Words and Music: Tim Hughes 2001, Thankyou Music 3

Sit Bible Reading: John 1: 1-14 We Listen To God s Word In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father s only son, full of grace and truth. This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God. Talk: Reverend Canon Jonathan Baker Stand We Affirm Our Faith We believe in God the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love. We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high. 4

We believe in one God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord, the light of your love is shining in the midst of the darkness, shining Jesus, Light of the World, shine upon us, Set us free by the truth you now bring us, Shine on me, shine on me. Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father's glory blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy Send forth your word Lord, and let there be light. Lord, I come to your awesome presence from the shadows into your radiance; By the blood I may enter your brightness, search me, try me, consume all my darkness. Shine on me, shine on me. As we gaze on your kingly brightness So our faces display your likeness, ever changing from glory to glory, mirrored here may our lives tell your story. Shine on me, shine on me. We Pray Together Sit or Kneel Prayers of Intercession Led by Ben Merrell Lord in your mercy Hear our prayer. Collect (Prayer for the Day) Almighty God, give us reverence for all creation and respect for every person, that we may mirror your likeness in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The intercessions end as we say Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. We Go Out Into The World 6

During the hymn, please come to the front to collect your Christingle, and process to the central crossing, where we ll finish our worship together. Offertory Hymn Longing for light, we wait in darkness, Longing for truth, we turn to you. Make us your own, your holy people, Light for the world to see. Christ be our light! Shine on our hearts! Shine through the darkness! Christ be our light! Shine in your church, gathered today! Longing for peace, our world is troubled. Longing for hope, many despair. Your word alone has power to save us. Make us your living voice. Longing for food, many are hungry. Longing for water, still many thirst. Make us your bread, broken for others, Shared until all are fed Longing for shelter, many are homeless. Longing for warmth, many are cold. Make us your building, sheltering others, Walls made of living stone. Many the gifts, many the people, Many the hearts that yearn to belong. Let us be servants to one another, Making your kingdom come. Words and Music: Bernadette Farrell (b 1957) 7

While holding our lit Christingles: Lord Jesus, Light of the world, as I hold your Christingle and think about your great love for me, help me to become a light bearing that love to others. Sending Out: Let us go in Peace We go into the world to walk in God s Light, to rejoice in God s love, and to reflect God s glory. Amen You are invited to coffee in the South Transept after the service.
