THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST August 26, 2018 Theme of the Day: Balaam was clueless as to who he was opposing, and the Angel of the Lord opened his eyes to the grace that was being offered. We too are clueless at times and need our eyes opened to his mercy and love. PRESERVICE MUSIC WELCOME INVOCATION AND CALL TO WORSHIP (From Psalm 95) P: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Come, let us sing to the LORD. C: Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! P: Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving. C: Let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! P: For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, C: And the sheep of his hand. P: Today, when you hear his voice, C: Do not harden your hearts, P: As at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness. C: For forty years God loathed that generation and said P: They are a people who go astray in their hearts. They have not known my ways. C: Come, let us sing to the LORD. All: Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! HYMN Come Thou Almighty King 905 (stanzas 1 3) CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Loving and merciful Father, when faced with difficult decisions and confronted by challenging circumstances, 1

C: We try to go it alone and we are filled with uncertainty and doubt. P: We think we know the path you want us to follow. C: But when we fail and our plans fall apart, P: Then we need our eyes opened to your mercy and love. All: Lord, have mercy on us blind, miserable sinners. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination P: The Angel of the Lord opened Balaam s eyes and had mercy on him. Almighty God has had mercy on us as well. He sent his Son to die for our sins and to open our eyes. Christ forgives you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. And so we set out once again All: Heading for the Promised Land! HYMN Come, Thou Almighty King 905 (stanza 4) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray: Lord Jesus Christ, you open the eyes of the blind and lead them in paths of righteousness for your name s sake. Through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, open our eyes to see the wonder of your love. We ask it in your name, Jesus. All: Amen. CHILDREN S MESSAGE MERCY 2

The congregation is invited to respond, That we may see your mercy and love. This is based upon Acts 26:18. THE LORD S PRAYER The 8:00a service concludes on page 6 with the Benediction. 3

THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER 10:00a OUR COMMUNION PRACTICE The Lord s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as he says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but his true body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with him and with one another (Matthew 26:26-28). Our Lord invites to his table those who have been baptized, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as he forgives and loves us, that they may show forth his death until he comes (1 Corinthians 11:26). Because those who eat and drink our Lord s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm (1 Corinthians 11:28-30) and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor. If you need communion delivered to you, please notify an usher or elder before the service begins. Gluten free communion wafers are available by raising your index finger as Christ s body is distributed, signaling the elder that you wish to receive a prewrapped gluten free wafer. The wrapping can be placed in the box at the end of the first pew with the individual cups. Individual cups, should be held until the chalice has passed. Non-alcoholic wine is available in the tinted cups. If you have some other allergy or need, please contact the church office so special arrangements can be made. Children or adults who have not yet been confirmed are invited to come forward for a blessing. As you do so please cross yourselves by placing your arms over your chest. 4
