Pastor Yap Writes... A New Year Prayer Dear Heavenly Father, For this coming new year, I have this request. I do not ask for happiness or any earthly things. Neither do I ask to understand the way You lead me. But this I ask teach me to do the thing that pleases You. I want to hear Your guiding voice and to walk daily with You. Make me swift to hear and ready to obey. And I know the year will be good if I desire to do the thing that pleases You! In Jesus Name. Amen. 2016 CHURCH VISION & BEYOND We continue to work towards our church vision for the coming new year: By God s help, Zion Serangoon seeks to be a disciple-making church focused on the diligent study and faithful obedience of His Word. This vision statement has a dual emphasis on the Bible and discipleship. Bible-reading & study At the beginning of the year, it is timely to re-commit ourselves to reading and studying the Bible for the next 12 months. Regular Bible reading and study are absolutely necessary for the Christian life. Thus, we must invest time and effort in cultivating this pivotal spiritual habit. As we read and study the Bible, God reveals His mind to us on how He thinks, what He wants for us and what His plans are for the world. Most importantly, the Bible tells us what God has done for us through His Son, Jesus Christ. The most vital part of the Christian life is having an active and vibrant relationship with the living God of the Bible. If you wish to grow your relationship with Him, you must make reading and studying the Bible a priority. Commit yourself to our church s BIBLE READING PROGRAMME, if you don t have a daily reading plan. It will be the best spiritual investment you can make for 2016. To further enrich your time of study, invest in a good Study Bible. ESV Study Bible comes highly recommended. Discipleship Group (DG) Join a Group, if you are not in any yet. Discipleship takes place in a small group context. Besides studying the Word of God together, we hold each other accountable to stay close to the Lord. In a DG, we encourage one another, help, pray and support one another to be Christ s disciples. We do not walk this path of discipleship alone. Ask any of the pastors if you wish to be a part of a DG. 62
Christmas Outreach on 18 December 2015 David Cheng The event was attended by about 250 people from children, youth, adults and senior adults. At 7pm the programme kicked off with a Christmas buffet dinner, after which guests were ushered to Sanctuary 2 for praise and worship in songs. The main highlight of the programme was the testimony by Peter Yu, a former Mediacorp actor, on how God transformed his life and a Gospel message by Pastor Eddy Lim. Peter invited his wife, Brenda, to go up on stage to share together with him. Her testimony surprised many as she also went through a challenging time as he did. Peter is now a taxi driver working hard from morning to evening. He is happy with it as it gives him the opportunity to live an honest, hardworking and contented life and also to share his life testimony with his passengers who are interested to hear God s deliverance of his sins and how he became a Christian. In fact, Peter and Brenda were both fighting against drug addiction and gambling to hide their personal problems and to make quick money while they were working together in a nightclub. But all these failed. Brenda s mother, a fervent Christian, had been praying for her only daughter to be delivered out from her pit-hole that trapped her in a vicious cycle of drugs and gambling. The day came when Brenda with Peter went to church with Brenda s mother. It was at this moment of their lives that God spoke to them of His love in Jesus and deliverance from sin. They decided to surrender their lives to the Lord Jesus. Some key highlights of the testimonies were a) Peter saw Jesus love in his wife; b) Brenda trusted God for Peter and not that she trusted Peter; c) Peter would feel uncomfortable over an additional 15cents change in his favour when buying a bottle of mineral water from 7- Eleven; d) if God s purpose is for him to be a taxi driver for all of his life he would continue to so; e) Peter gave up smoking and buying 4D after he became a Christian. The power of God to deliver them from sins and undesirable activities is indeed great. After the testimony, Pastor Eddy shared a message on The True Meaning of Christmas based on Matthew 1:18-25 that exhorted us to understand what happened during the time of Jesus birth - the dark side and beautiful side of Christmas. On the dark side, we never could imagine Herod would order the killings of infants below 2 years old while he ruled then. The ugly side is sin has contaminated our soul. God is always ahead of us in everything such that He protects and cares for us. The beautiful side is Christ came to cure the ugliness of the world of sin, and we are the reason He loves us and came to save us. 59 The fellowship continued with dessert time from 9:15pm to 10pm. New attendees were also given a mug each with a tract and church service information. 65

Pray for God's guidance and wisdom upon our church leaders so that they will take decisions based on His will and purposes. It is crucial for our church leaders to have a spiritually vibrant relationship with the Lord. Pray that their spiritual walk with God will be intimate and sweet. May they serve with great joy and a deep sense of privilege. Foreign Missions - East Asia: Isaac Fellowship Bible School Thank God for this school. It provides Bible-based, Christ-centred and graceoriented theological education to equip their students for the work of the ministry. Praise God most graduates have become pastors and evangelists for Isaac Fellowship's group of churches. This has become their unique strategy of growth. Uphold the principal, Peter Lee, and the faculty members as they teach and mentor the students. Since its founding, the school has moved its training centre to several locations. The Lord has moved their hearts to plan to purchase their own premises. This is a huge undertaking. Pray to the Lord to provide the funds required. 64
