As We Gather Changed from glory into glory. In his classic hymn Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, hymn-writer Charles Wesley describes the final change of the redeemed believer in Jesus Christ. The believer, by God s grace, is perfectly restored in Christ, who set aside His glory to suffer and die for the sins of all people. The sight on the Mount of Transfiguration is glorious but for us and for our salvation, Jesus saw beyond the glory of His transfiguration on the mountain to the glory of the cross, where He would complete God s saving work on our behalf. As we sing our hymns of praise, we find our reason for glory in God s grace-filled action for us. Opening Hymn Invocation T Preparation for Worship T #719 Jesus on the Mountain Peak P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Confession and Absolution P We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy. C Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from conception. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. P God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. You are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will. C Amen. 2

T The Service of the Word T Kyrie Lord, Have Mercy Gloria in Excelsis Glory to God in the Highest Salutation P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. 3

Prayer of the Day P Let us pray...through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Old Testament Reading Exodus 3:1-14 1 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. 3 Then Moses said, I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn. 4 So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses! And he said, Here I am. 5 Then He said, Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. 6 Moreover He said, I am the God of your father the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 And the LORD said: I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. 8 So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt. 11 But Moses said to God, Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt? 12 So He said, I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain. 13 Then Moses said to God, Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they say to me, What is His name? what shall I say to them? 14 And God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. And He said, Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you. 4

Psalm of the Day Psalm 84:1-2, 4, 10-12 P How lovely is Your tabernacle, C O LORD of hosts! P My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the LORD; C My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. P Blessed are those who dwell in Your house; C They will still be praising You. P For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. C I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God Than dwell in the tents of wickedness. P For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; C No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly. P O LORD of hosts, C Blessed is the man who trusts in You! Epistle Reading 2 Peter 1:16-21 16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 5

Alleluia P Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it. Confession of Faith T The Baptism of Ziva Leigh Wiese T I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. Apostles Creed I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Sermon Text Matthew 17:1-9 1 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; 2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. 5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him! 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid. 7 But Jesus came and touched them and said, Arise, and do not be afraid. 8 When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. 9 Now as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead.
