THE SUFFICIENCY OF CHRIST IN MARRIAGE. Not just enough, Plenty!

Transcription:

October 11, 2015 Meditation This whole idea of seeing God, yourself, and your marriage for what they truly are is all about clear, biblical thinking. Locating the source of your marriage problems in your marriage is like saying the Battle of Bull Run was caused by some really troubled farmland. The battle was fought on farmland, but its cause lay elsewhere. - Dave Harvey, When Sinners Say I Do : Discovering the Power of the Gospel for Marriage When your ears hear and your eyes see the sin, weakness, or failure of your husband or wife, it is never an accident; it is always grace. God loves your spouse, and he is committed to transforming him or her by his grace, and he has chosen you to be one of his regular tools of change. - Paul David Tripp, What Did You Expect?: Redeeming The Realities Of Marriage Readings to help you prepare to worship, as Jesus said, in spirit and in truth. When you hear the first song begin, please come take a seat.

God is present with us in worship, and we ask Him to turn our hearts and minds toward Him. Everlasting God Words and music: Brenton Brown, Ken Riley 2005 Thankyou Music Isaiah 40:28-31 CCLI #: 11107331 We gather in the presence of God Song of Gathering Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord. We will wait upon the Lord, We will wait upon the Lord. Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord. We will wait upon the Lord, We will wait upon the Lord. Our God, You reign forever. Our hope, our Strong Deliverer! You are the everlasting God, The everlasting God. You do not faint, You won t grow weary. You re the defender of the weak, You comfort those in need, You lift us up on wings like eagles. Psalm 72:1-4, 12-14, 18-19 Please stand if able. Welcome and Call to Worship Leader: Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the royal son! May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice! Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness! People: May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor! Leader: For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper. He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy. People: From oppression and violence he redeems their life, and precious is their blood in his sight. Leader: Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things. People: Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen! 2

Song of Praise Jesus shall reign where er the sun Does its successive journeys run; His kingdom stretch from shore to shore, Till moons shall wax and wane no more. To Him shall endless prayer be made, And praises throng to crown His head; His Name like sweet perfume shall rise With every morning sacrifice. People and realms of every tongue Dwell on His love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on His Name. Blessings abound wherever He reigns; The prisoner leaps to lose his chains; The weary find eternal rest, And all the sons of want are blessed. Let every creature rise and bring Peculiar honors to our King; Angels descend with songs again, And earth repeat the loud amen! Jesus Shall Reign Words: Isaac Watts Music: John Hatton Public domain Psalm 72 Scripture Reading If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! 1 Corinthians 13:1-6 3

A time to be honest with God about our need for forgiveness. Please read together. We confess our sin and receive grace Confession of Sin Holy God, we are guilty - of rejecting Your commands, of doubting Your promises, of proud self-reliance, of neglect to rest in You. Daily we fail to love You and our neighbor as we ought. Praise You for providing the Savior in Jesus, who takes our sin and gives us His righteousness! Lord, continue the work of salvation in us: Conquer our weakness with Your strength, blot out our selfishness with Your glory. Meet us in our suffering and disappointments, refine us as You see fit. Keep us from returning to sin s bondage, brighten our hearts with Your grace. Redirect our desires so that we delight deeply in You. Amen. Silent Confession 1 John 4:10 Assurance of Pardon This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Mighty To Save Words and music: Reuben Morgan, Ben Fielding 2006 Hillsong Publishing Zephaniah 3:17, Hebrews 2:10, Ezekiel 38:20 4 Song of Renewal Everyone needs compassion, love that s never failing. Let mercy fall on me. Everyone needs forgiveness, the kindness of a Savior, The hope of nations. Savior, He can move the mountains, My God is mighty to save, He is mighty to save! Forever, Author of salvation He rose and conquered the grave, Jesus conquered the grave! So take me as You find me, all my fears and failures. Fill my life again. I give my life to follow, everything I believe in. Now I surrender. Shine your light and let the whole world see. We re singing for the glory of the risen King. Shine your light and let the whole world see. We re singing for the glory of the risen King.

We respond to the grace received Passing of the Peace Being set right with God enables us to participate in his work. Community Life Update and Prayer - Young Men s Academy Engagement Team Offering We see giving as a part of worship. If you feel the same way we invite you to participate. Song of Preparation On Jordan s stormy banks I stand, and cast a wishful eye, To Canaan s fair and happy land, where my possessions lie. All o er those wide extended plains, shines one eternal day. There God, the Son forever reigns, and scatters night away. I am bound, (I am bound) I am bound, (I am bound) I am bound for the promised land. I am bound, (I am bound) I am bound, (I am bound) I am bound for the promised land. No chilling winds nor poisonous breath, can reach that healthful shore, Sickness, sorrow, pain and death, are felt and feared no more. When shall I reach that happy place, and be forever blest? When shall I see my Father s face, and in His bosom rest? (x2) On Jordan s Stormy Banks I Stand Words: Samuel Stennet Music: Christopher Miner 1997 Christopher Miner Music In this song the Christian life is compared to when the Israelites looked forward to entering the promised land of Canaan on the other side of the Jordan River. They had endured many hardships while waiting for God to fulfill his promises of land and rest. Though we endure difficulties in this life, in Christ we look forward with hope to when God s promises will come to fruition. 5

Our mind, body, and spirit are nourished with food that does not perish. Ephesians 5:22-33 Isaiah 40:8 Today s sermon is given by Pastor Matt Lorish. God feeds us with His Word Sermon Text 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Leader: The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. People: Praise be to God! Sermon We encourage you to use this space to take notes or write questions. 6

Invitation to the Lord s Supper Words of Institution The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Leader: Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of our faith: People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Parents who would like for their nursery-aged children to be prayed for during communion should pick them up at this time. 1 Corinthians 11:23b-26 The Lord s Supper Gluten-free, nut-free wafers are located in the wooden boxes. If you would like, a communion distributor will pray for your children. At the back of the fellowship hall is someone ready to pray with and for you. As others take communion please feel free to pray, sing along, or talk quietly with your neighbor. Song of Communion I see the King of glory Coming down the clouds with fire The whole earth shakes, the whole earth shakes. I see His love and mercy Washing over all our sin The people sing, the people sing. Hosanna, Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna, Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest! I see a generation Rising up to take their place With selfless faith, with selfless faith. I see a near revival Stirring as we pray and seek We re on our knees, we re on our knees. Heal my heart and make it clean. Open up my eyes to the things unseen. Show me how to love like You have loved me. Break my heart for what breaks Yours, Everything I am for Your kingdom come. As I walk from earth into eternity. (x2) Hosanna Words and music: Brooke Ligertwood 2006 Hillsong Publishing John 12:13 Mark 11:9-10 Matthew 21:9 7

We go forth to love and serve God and neighbor. How Great Thou Art Words and music: Stuart K. Hine 1949 & 1953 God sends us out refreshed Song of Rejoicing O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, Consider all the works Thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed. Then sings my soul, my Savior, God, to Thee, How great Thou art, how great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior, God, to Thee, How great Thou art, how great Thou art! And when I think that God, his Son, not sparing, Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died, to take away my sin. When Christ shall come with shouts of acclamation, And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart. Then I shall bow in humble adoration, And there proclaim, My God, how great Thou art!
