July 1, 2018 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH #481/PAGE 4 ~PASTOR S NOTES~ Thanks to everyone who attended our annual parish picnic. All had a good time. A special thanks also, to all those individuals and groups that worked so hard to plan, shop, set up, cook, serve, and clean up, thus making our picnic such a success. Many people were unable to come because of other plans. I realize this is a busy time with graduations, weddings, etc. So next year we will move our picnic to around the third weekend in September. It will be an opportunity for new parish families and school families to get to know our parish family. This week our country celebrates her independence. Besides enjoying the fireworks, ball games, and cookouts and other festivities we should also give thanks to God at Mass for our freedom but we need to pray that our country will once again champion the rights of all her citizens, especially the innocent and defenseless unborn. Our registration for the next school year looks good but we still have room to educate more children. So spread the word among your friends and family that our school is growing and is a dynamic place that tries hard to foster the values of or faith and families. Today we begin having what is called a quiet Mass at 8 a.m. Since there will not be music at this Mass I would like to point out a few things to our priests, deacons and people with regard to the proper celebration of a Mass without music. The Mass will be different in certain areas. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) states: If there is no singing at the Entrance, the antiphon given in the Missal is recited either by the faithful, or by some of them, or by a reader; otherwise, it is recited by the Priest himself, who may even adapt it as an introductory explanation (cf. no. 31). For those who have attended weekday Masses that I presided over, you will be familiar with reciting the Entrance Antiphon at the beginning of Mass. Another area of difference is that the Alleluia may be recited whereas normally it is required to be sung. Since there are two readings before the Gospel, the Alleluia is necessary. The Alleluia may be omitted during a Mass with only one reading before the Gospel. The GIRM states in no. 63, When there is only one reading before the Gospel: c) the Alleluia or the Verse before the Gospel, if not sung, may be omitted. Again, I do not use the Alleluia at regular weekday Masses when I celebrate Mass without a deacon. At communion the GIRM in no. 87 says, However, if there is no singing, the antiphon given in the Missal may be recited either by the faithful, or by some of them, or by a reader; otherwise, it is recited by the Priest himself after he has received Communion and before he distributes Communion to the faithful. And of course at the end of Mass, after the dismissal, the servers and clergy profess out in silence. I hope those who attend the 8 a.m. Sunday Mass will find it more peaceful but no less reverent. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo
