Immanuel means God with us, and surely He is enabling us to be a strong witness to His presence in our lives. A slow but steady membership growth and a continued massive Sunday school attendance are very encouraging. Faithful servants who make possible a food pantry often provide food for over five hundred a month and school supplies to over a hundred children. All of this and so much more we are able to do by God s grace. Still a quick look at our finances show that this is really accomplished by God s grace alone. Low pastoral expenses coupled with unexpected income from off budget sources make our ministry possible. Regular offerings from members grow each year by so small a measure that hopes for a future full time pastoral ministry seem distant at best. At the end of October we will celebrate Reformation and our Lutheran heritage with a festival service followed by brats and beer. But Reformation means you Taking a look at ourselves! have taken a hard look at what you have been doing and committing yourself to changing those things that need to change - an increase in stewardship, yes, giving is needed. Beginning the first Sunday in November we will start to take a long hard look at what is required of us if we are people who will be found faithful recipients of God s abundant blessings. Your fellow recipient of God s Grace, Pastor McKinley Reformation Sunday & Oktoberfest October 27th is Reformation Sunday and an Oktoberfest following the service in the educational building. Hope to see everyone there! Sponsor a Child or Fill a cup with your loose change. The CROP Walk is October 20th at the Presbyterian Church in Toms River. See Cindy Camp for more details! Page 2 October 6th: Blessing of the Animals: - Bring your pets to be blessed! Why do we bless our pets? October 4th is the commemoration of St. Francis of Assisi. He believed that nature itself was the mirror of God. He called all creatures his brothers and sisters, and even preached to the birds and supposedly persuaded a wolf to stop attacking some locals if they agreed to feed the wolf. All pets must be on a leash, and small pets must be crated. October 27th: Reformation Sunday: - Today we acknowledge the day that Martin Luther nailed the 95 theses on the door of the Wittenberg church. To celebrate, we will be using Luther s Chorale Service reprinted from the Lutheran Book of Worship. The service will be followed with our Oktoberfest in the Education Building. WEAR SOMETHING RED! Page 4 Pictures from Rally Day! FELLOWSHIP! FOOD! FUN! Honoring Anita Paerg On Sunday, September 22, 2013, the congregation at Immanuel honored Anita Paerg, who served as organist and choir director for us for over 55 years! A new banner of praise to the Lord was presented to the church in her honor, and a special prayer was said. Anita played the piano during the communion, and a special cake was shared with all after the service. Born in New York City, Anita Langbein Paerg has lived in Jackson, New Jersey, since the age of two. Anita studied piano under the late Alton Jones and received her Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees from the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. As a fourth year student there, she sang in the Juilliard Chorus for the groundbreaking ceremony for Lincoln Center. Ms. Paerg was the vocal music teacher in the Seaside Park School, choral director of the Lakewood Estonian Chorus, and choral director of the Lakewood Maenner and Damenchor. She was instrumental in forming the Musik Garten Chor, the youth chorus of the Lakewood Maennerchor, which participated in various concerts in Germany. She directed the mass chorus at the annual German Heritage Festival held at the PNC Bank Center from its beginning in 1974. Most important to members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakewood, New Jersey, is that Anita was our organist and choir director for fifty five years! We are truly blessed to have been in the congregation as she directed choirs and accompanied hymns. Her inspiring music was truly an aid to worship. We honor her today and thank her for her many years of service to her church and her Lord.

Page 5 Congratulations to Matt Di Clemente Matt applied for and received a grant from the New Jersey Synod Wurffel Fund which distributes grants to students of all ages who are seeking two year, four year or advanced degrees.
