Today from the life of the church One of the towns in the Los Angeles basin is named Azusa. The name derives from an indigenous language of the area, as do the place names Pacoima, Tujunga and Cucamonga. It may mean in this indigenous language something like grandmother s as in grandmother s house. In an old Jack Benny joke Azusa was characterized as everything from A to Z in the USA. When the risen Christ says, I am the Alpha and Omega it evokes the all in all, everything from A to Z. And it is interesting to note that the risen Christ speaks Greek. His dad spoke Hebrew. The God who is still speaking speaks the local language, always. Pastor Michael Photo: Alfa i Omega Monument on Torredembarra beach, Catalonia, Spain (c. 2000)

Gathering of God s People Prelude Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us - arr. Phillip Keveren Greeting and Welcome *Call to Worship And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; God will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. See, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. *Opening Prayer Then he said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Let us pray, Almighty God, you have knit together your people in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ (whom we serve) our Sovereign: Give us the grace to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who love you; through Jesus Christ our risen Savior, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. *Opening Hymn #526 For All The Saints *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Let us pray. We confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. *Declaration of forgiveness 3

*Song of Praise Gloria *Passing the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Children s Time Rev. Michael Swartz Prayer for Illumination Proclaiming the Good News Scripture Wisdom of Solomon 3:1-9 But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be an affliction, And their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of men they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples and the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his elect, and he watches over his holy ones. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4

Psalm 24 The earth is the Lord s and all that is in it, the world and those who dwell therein. For the Lord has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord, and who may stand in God s holy place? Those of the innocent hands and purity of heart, who do not swear on God s being, nor do they pledge by what is false. They shall receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of their salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek you, O Lord, of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is the King of Glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of Glory? Truly, the Lord of hosts is the King of glory. Scripture Revelation 21:16a Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. Then he said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

Special Music In Remembrance - Buryl Red *Gospel John 11:32-44 Sermon When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus began to weep So the Jews said, See how he loved him! But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying? Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days. Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me. When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus come out! The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him and let him go. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you O Christ. Rev. Michael Swartz *Hymn #361 I Sing a Song of the Saints of God 6

Prayer of Consecration and Our Lord s Prayer Let us pray as Christ our Savior has taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Breaking Bread and Pouring Wine Sharing the Elements The bread is eaten when served; the wine is held to be taken together. Gifts of Good News Acts 17:16-31 In a time of intentional focus on stewardship, the story of Paul in Athens may strike us as an odd biblical story for today. Isn t this the time when we normally hear the parable of the talents; or about the foolish barn-builder; or the rich man who was shocked to hear Jesus answer that to see the Realm of God you have to sell it all and give the proceeds to the poor? Stewardship is about money; but not only about money. Its many facets include, among other things, the sharing of our faith. This is precisely what Paul is engaged in with the Athenians. Noting their many idols as he has toured their great city, he calls attention to one particular worship space dedicated to an unknown god. The Athenians are scrupulous in not wanting to offend the deities by leaving any divinity unacknowledged. Paul seizes the opportunity to introduce them to the God made known in Jesus Christ. The One True God. This God, once unknown, has now been revealed! In 1 Corinthians, Paul writes that we are stewards of the mysteries of God. As people who know the nature of our God and the love that God has for all of creation, a love that is more powerful even than death itself, we are called to share this story. We are stewards of the Gospel and as such we do not hoard this good news, but we offer it to others. Paul was radically devoted to God and the mission to tell the world of God s loving intentions toward creation. His priority was to love and serve the God who could not be contained in any idol of wood, stone, silver, or gold. When you know this to be true, it puts everything else in its proper place. As we reflect on what it means to be a steward, we are invited to think both about our priorities and how well we have shared with others the real treasure we have in the story of our faith. How are you practicing this kind of stewardship? Who can you tell about God s unconditional love? With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? - Micah 6:6 12
