Listen to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you I pray. O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I plead my case to you, and watch. For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; you do not entertain evil. But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house, I will bow down toward your holy temple in awe of you. Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness make your way straight before me. Jana Hemphill *HYMN 275 A Mighty Fortress is our God PRAYER OF CONFESSION (seated) Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open us to a future in which we can be changed; liberate us from habits and addictions that only you can overcome; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. (silent reflection) Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON Friends, believe the good news of the gospel: in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE 71 Surely, It Is God Who Saves Me (refrain) Surely, it is God who saves me; I will trust and not be afraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, and God ill be my Savior. (repeat) *PASSING OF THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you! And also with you. Frenzied, Unclean Spirit Kristi Button Luke 11:14-26 14 Now he was casting out a demon that was mute; when the demon had gone out, the one who had been mute spoke, and the crowds were amazed. 15 But some of them said, He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons. 16 Others, to test him, kept demanding from him a sign from heaven. 17 But he knew what they were thinking and said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself becomes a desert, and house falls on house. 18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? for you say that I cast out the demons by Beelzebul. 19 Now if I cast out the demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your exorcists cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out the demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his castle, his property is safe. 22 But when one stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his plunder. 23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 24 When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it wanders through waterless regions looking for a resting place, but not finding any, it says, I will return to my house from which I came. 25 When it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and live there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first. SERMON Bringing our Demons to Jesus RESPONSE TO THE WORD Rev. Phil Butin *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from A Brief Statement of Faith) We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

SERVICE OF ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION ORDINATION QUESTIONS QUESTIONS TO THE CONGREGATION Elder: Do we, the members of this church, accept these partners in our common ministry as ruling elders and deacons, chosen by God's Spirit through the voice of this congregation to lead us and serve among us in the way of Jesus Christ? People: We do. Elder: Do we agree to encourage them, to respect their decisions, to follow as they guide us, and to honor and support their service, as together we all serve Jesus Christ, who alone is Head of the Church? People: We do. *PRAYER FOR ORDINATION (congregation please stand, new elders and deacons kneel as you are able) Pastor: All: (All Presbyterian teaching and ruling elders come forward to share in the laying on of hands.) You are now elders and deacons in the Church of Jesus Christ and for this congregation. Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Amen. REAFFIRMATION OF CONGREGATIONAL MISSION AND VISION Called to be a light on the hill, we boldly proclaim and serve Christ, the hope of our changing world. Reaching out as a visible expression of God s grace, we will meet people where we are, inviting all into Christ s family through engaging worship, fellowship, learning, and service. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
