January 13, 2019 4 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This feast marks the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of Ordinary Time of the Church Liturgical Year. Today s celebration reminds us of the importance of the sacrament of Baptism in our lives as Christians. In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah tells us that Christ, the anointed one of God, is with us to bring us healing and peace. In the second reading, Saint Paul assures us that God saved us by the cleansing water of baptism and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit which he poured over us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Indeed, through his own Baptism, Christ sanctified and opened the fountain of Baptism for each one of us. This week s Gospel describes the Baptism of the Lord by John the Baptist. The Spirit of the Lord descends on Jesus and the voice of God the Father testifies: This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. At the time of our Baptism, we, too, become the children of God and we receive the power of the Holy Spirit that guides us to live more like Jesus. Baptism - Door to the Spirit According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1213), the sacrament of Baptism is the door to the Holy Spirit and to the other sacraments (Council of Florence). By Baptism, the believer is freed from sin, reborn as God's child, made a member of Christ and of the Church, and given a share in the Church's mission. (CCC 1213) Various Names 1. Baptism means to plunge or immerse. This plunging into water symbolizes the believer's burial with Christ, followed by his rising up as a "new creature" (2 Cor 5:17). 2. "The washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit" (another name for Baptism) refers to the birth by water and the Spirit which is needed to "enter the kingdom of God" (Jn 3:5). 3. "This bath is called enlightenment because those instructed are enlightened in their understanding'" (St. Justin). (CCC 1214-1216). There are some people in our parish who are not yet baptized or have not had their children baptized. I encourage all those parents to bring their children to receive this Sacrament of new life. I also encourage those adults who have not been baptized or fully initiated into the Church to consider joining our Faith Formation program (RCIA). May God help us to live according to our baptismal promises: to reject Satan and accept Jesus at all times and in all circumstances. God bless you! Fr. John Francis
