Easter Evening April 1, 2018 Faith Presbyterian Church Presbyterian Church in America 620 South Shirley, Tacoma, Washington 98465 Ministers: Robert S. Rayburn, Richard H. DeMass, Steven A. Nicoletti 253-752-7601 fpc@faithtacoma.org www.faithtacoma.org

Easter Evening April 1, 2018 6:00 p.m. Upon entering the sanctuary please maintain silence for the sake of the congregation s preparation for worship, and please make sure electronic devices are off or using silent mode. Prelude Heut Triumpheret Gottes Sohn...J. S. Bach (1685-1750) Welcome and Announcements +Silent Prayer Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice! Psalm 105:1-3 (ESV) Call to Worship *Hymn of Praise to God Thine Be the Glory No. 274 +Confession of Sin Silent Prayer Corporate Prayer O Almighty God, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus; we acknowledge that we are unworthy of your redeeming grace. We have not believed your promises; nor trusted in our living Lord. Through worldliness of spirit; our eyes have been kept from discerning his presence with us. Through disappointment of mind and dejection of spirit; our hearts have not burned within us as we have heard his Word. We have not trusted in his redeeming power; and have been overcome of evil. We have forgotten the glad tidings of his victory over death; and have not known the things that belong to our peace. But now in penitence we come to you; beseeching your forgiveness. Mercifully grant us absolution from all our sins; and restore unto us the joy of your salvation; for Jesus Christ s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen. Assurance of Pardon What does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness. The words, it was credited to him were written not for him alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness--for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Romans 4:3, 23-25 *Hymn of Faith in Jesus Christ That Easter Day with Joy Was Bright No. 278

Offering for the Deacons Fund Aria, Larghetto e cantabile Pietro Domenico Paradies *Congregational Petitions and the Lord s Prayer Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Matthew 6: 9 13 (KJV) Sermon Two Easter Sermons The Lord s Supper The general order of communion will be back to front, with the balcony coming first. As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request. You are welcome to participate in the Lord s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord s Supper. Lord Jesus, the burdens of my life are too great for me. I know that my heaviest burden is my own sin. My sin has made me estranged from God and it is too great for me to carry. You say to all sinners, including me, Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. These are the words my guilty conscience longs for. Help me Lord Jesus to understand and believe your loving promise that I can have rest from my sins. And even more, that I can know you and have eternal life. Amen. Ave verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine, Hail true body born of the Virgin Mary, Vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine, Truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for man, Cujus latus perforatum fluxit aqua et sanguine. Whose pierced side flowed with water and blood. Esto nobis praegustatum mortis in examine. Be to us food (now and) in the trial of death. Jesu dulcis! Jesu pie, fili Mariae. Amen. Sweet Jesus! Holy Jesus, son of Mary. Amen. Karl Jenkins Hymn Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain No. 266

Reading of Scripture John 20:1-10 (ESV p. 906) *Hymn Alleluia! Alleluia! No. 283 *Benediction +Silent Prayer Let this wonderful news of Jesus Christ and His resurrection from the dead, O Lord, come unto us, not in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Postlude On wings of living light At earliest dawn of day Came down the angel bright And rolled the stone away. The keepers watching near At that dread sight and sound Fell down with sudden fear Like dead men to the ground. Then rose from death s dark gloom Unseen by mortal eye, Triumphant over the tomb, The Lord of earth and sky. Ye children of the light Arise with Him arise. See how the Day-star bright Is burning in the skies. Leave in the grave beneath The old things passed away, Buried with Him in death, O live with Him today. We sing thee Lord Divine With all our hearts and powers, For we are ever thine, And Thou art ever ours. William Walsham How, 1823-97 Gregory D Wilbur *Congregation standing +The congregation is invited to kneel CCLI License #751114

Explanation of the Cover Symbol Since the time of the Reformation, the burning bush has been a symbol of the Church. The Latin words are taken from Exodus 3:2 and read...and yet it was not consumed. In one of his letters Samuel Rutherford reminds his correspondent, The bush has been burning these five thousand years, and no man yet saw the ashes of that fire.
