Las Vegas Youth Ministry Submitted by: Kristine Tisinger Mission Trip Eleven youth and two sponsors participated in our mission trip to Las Vegas, NV from June 13-18. Our group partnered with local ministries and charities to decorate lunch bags for families with kids in the hospital, work at southern Nevada s only food bank, build toys for kids in homeless shelters and in the foster care system, and help run a summer camp at a horse ranch for kids with disabilities. We also took time to see a Vegas show, ride a rollercoaster, visit the Hoover Dam, walk around downtown Vegas, and have a pool party. I want to thank everyone who helped to support our amazing trip to Vegas!
What does it take to positively impact the life of a child living in Jacksboro? By volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Jack County you can make a difference in a child s life in as little as 1 hour per month. BBBS is looking for volunteers to serve as mentors in our Lunch Buddies and Community programs. Lunch Buddy volunteers are paired with a child from Jacksboro Elementary school and commit to having a 30 minute lunch with their Little at the school 2-4 times per month for a year. Community volunteers are paired with a child in Jacksboro and meet 2-4 times per month to spend time together doing things like watching movies, going bowling, fishing, or just taking a walk together. Volunteers receive regular support from BBBS in coming up with ideas for outings, and receive special rates on things like Six Flags passes. These small commitments can make a world of difference in the life of children. Children served by the program are 27% less likely to use alcohol, 47% less likely to use illegal drugs, and 52% less likely to skip school. 95% report an increase in academic success. Littles at Jacksboro Elementary have said that having a mentor makes them feel special, and they love the time they spend together. Jacksboro has over a dozen children waiting to be matched with a mentor. End the wait for a child today- to apply to be a Big Brother or a Big Sister, fill out a Volunteer inquiry form at www.bbbs.org or contact Chris Cabanillas at ccabanillas@bbbs.org or 940-567-2112. Submitted by: Kristine Tisinger The Parish Men s Ministry is a place for all Christian men of the Jacksboro area to come together for fellowship, prayer and encouragement! We are dedicated to helping each other and the community of Jacksboro! We start cooking breakfast at 6:30am; eat at 7:00am. We enjoy intriguing conversations and moments of prayer. Each breakfast is held in the Parish Fellowship Hall. Please join us on July 28, 2016 @ 7am. For more info, please email Brian Davenport at davenportbg@jacksboroisd.net
From the Desk of Rev. Dr. Suzanne Castle It's hot, I know. But I'm already thinking about Advent! And I'm thinking about our decorations, specifically our tree decorations. Chrismons are Christmas decorations with Christian symbols on them. They help Christians to remember that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus. And we use them to decorate our trees at The Parish during Advent. The word, Chrismon is a combination of Christ and monogram (meaning symbol). Chrismons are traditionally colored white and gold. White is the liturgical (or Church) color for Christmas and symbolizes that Jesus was pure and perfect. Gold symbolizes His Majesty and Glory. Chrismons can be made from nearly anything, but paper and embroidered ones are the most widely used. And ours are badly in need of some updating! During the beginning of AUGUST, we will have a Chrismon-making workshop set up in the Fellowship Hall. Tables and directions with all the supplies will be on hand for you, your friends, your family to come in and start helping us with some much needed ornamentation. I'm grateful to Margaret Johnson and Clydene Webb who will be assisting me in getting us organized and off to our creative endeavor! Be on the lookout for more information over the next several weeks. However, I do need some folks who are willing to cut the patterns in JULY. We will be using styrofoam, and I have the patterns ready to be handed out. Please let me know if you can help us! And just a word about Christmas... did you realize that Christmas Eve is on a Saturday! It is! And how exciting is this? We will have a beautiful candlelight service on Saturday evening and then gather at 1045a on Sunday morning for an incredible service on Christmas morning to sing our alleluias and our glorias! Make plans now with your family to join us! Suzanne
