TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST October 22, 2017 WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN Holy God, We Praise Thy Name LSB 940 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION L In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit C Amen L If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. L Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. L Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen ENTRANCE HYMN Before You, Lord, We Bow LSB 966 KYRIE (Page 152-153) 3

HYMN OF PRAISE (Pg. 154) Gloria in Excelsis SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY L The Lord be with you. C And also with you. L Let us pray. O God, the protector of all who trust in You, have mercy on us that with You as our ruler and guide we may so pass through things temporal that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING 44:21-45:7 The LORD Redeems Israel Remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are my servant; I formed you; you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me. I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you. Sing, O heavens, for the LORD has done it; shout, O depths of the earth; break forth into singing, O mountains, O forest, and every tree in it! For the LORD has redeemed Jacob, and will be glorified in Israel. Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: I am the LORD, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself, who frustrates the signs of liars and makes fools of diviners, who turns wise men back and makes their knowledge foolish, who confirms the word of his servant and fulfills the counsel of his messengers, who says of Jerusalem, She shall be inhabited, and of the cities of Judah, They shall be built, and I will raise up their ruins ; 4

who says to the deep, Be dry; I will dry up your rivers ; who says of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and he shall fulfill all my purpose ; saying of Jerusalem, She shall be built, and of the temple, Your foundation shall be laid. Cyrus, God s Instrument Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed: I will go before you and level the exalted places, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I name you, though you do not know me. I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me, that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and create calamity, I am the LORD, who does all these things. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 121:1-8 I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. 5

He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. EPISTLE READING 1 Thessalonians 1:1 10 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. 6

A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE C Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 22:15 22 L The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the twenty-second chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle [Jesus] in his talk. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin for the tax. And they brought him a denarius. And Jesus said to them, Whose likeness and inscription is this? They said, Caesar s. Then he said to them, Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar s, and to God the things that are God s. When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away. L This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Announcements BUILDING HEALTHY FAMILIES God is the Lord and Giver of Life at all ages and stages. Yet many countries and six of our United States have now legalized Physician s Assisted Suicide, allowing a person with a terminal illness to receive a lethal, life-ending prescription medication from their physician to end life on their own terms. Iowa is targeted as one of the next states to consider this legislation. Guised in soft words such as compassion and self-determination, this practice cruelly exploits the fear of suffering and the frustration felt when we cannot restore to health those whom we love. It not only usurps authority that belongs to God, but also opens a wide door to abuse of frail and dependent elderly, disabled adults and children and those with mental illness. It also puts insurance companies in the position of withholding life-saving treatment for anyone because the cheapest treatment for anyone will always be death. LFS is committed to educating others about this critical, emerging issue. Contact Rev. Jim Lamb (jlamb@lfsiowa.org) to arrange an educational event in your community. Lutheran Family Service of Iowa - 6200 Aurora Ave., Ste 410W, Urbandale, IA 50322 (515-251-4900) LIFE QUOTES The Eternal Being, who knows everything and who created the whole universe, became not only a man but (before that) a baby, and before that a fetus in a woman s body. C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity - A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life - www. lutheransforlife.org. CHOIR Schedule is as follows: Wednesdays at 7:00pm October 25, November 1, 8, 15 & 29. Questions? Call me! Julie 792-2152. ATTENTION Anyone who would like to help others & have fun. There is a great need for quilts here in Newton & abroad so we are planning to work on them on Tuesday, Oct. 31 and Thursday, Nov. 2. We will begin around 9 a.m. and work as long as you like. Please bring a sack lunch if you plan to stay through the noon hour. You won t go hungry if you forget as we always have a few snacks. We would love to have you join us. (Men are also welcome. Some of you have tied quilts at Spring Awakening so we know you are capable.) We are in need of people to iron, pin, sew, & tie. However, we would welcome you to just join us for Christian fellowship. Please consider coming. 11

THRIVENT ACTION TEAM PROJECTS Many needs have been identified here in Newton and around the world. Currently, we have 3 Thrivent Action Team projects to help meet those needs. The first one, under the leadership of Pat Shelton, is for the Pregnancy Center of Central Iowa. They offer free pregnancy tests and counseling on alternatives to abortion along with classes for the families as well as maternity and baby clothing and equipment. They can use baby items and clothing for young children. Another local project, headed by Bob Bringolf, is for the Salvation Army. They served over 325 families, along with approximately one hundred homeless this summer. Usually, OSL collects food items at Thanksgiving, but there is a real need now for the following items, which they can t keep in stock: canned vegetables, canned fruit, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti sauce, Tuna Helper, and Ramon noodles. Along with the food items, they are in need of quilts, which we will be putting together soon. The last current Thrivent Action Team project, which was granted to Steve Shelton, is to provide money for transportation of items for Orphan Grain Train of Clemons, Iowa. Branch manager, John Maddick, recently sent a plea for help to pay for transporting items to hurricane victims. They also are in need of gently used clothing for babies adults, shoes, blankets, and kitchen items. If you would like to contribute items for these projects, please place them in the labeled boxes in the Narthex. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation, please put it in an envelope marked for the project you are supporting and put it in the Bringolf box (B4) or give it to them or the Sheltons. In order to complete these projects and their final reports, we would like to have your contributions here by October 31. Thanks for your support and especially for your prayers for these projects and recipients. If you are a Thrivent member, please consider applying for a Thrivent Action Team Project. It s a fairly easy process. You are able to receive two of them worth $250 each year. If you are not a Thrivent member, you can become an associate member for $19.95/year and apply for one project worth $250/year with a total of three/lifetime. If you would like help in applying for the Thrivent Action Team projects, talk to the Sheltons or the Bringolfs. 12
