Trinity Lutheran Church Contemporary Worship Service May 5, 2013-10:45 Service 25th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ELCA WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE MUSIC BY - UMD CHAMBER SINGERS - (Directed by Dr. Stanley Wold) This group is a 15- to 18-voice ensemble selected from the parent ensemble, University Singers. Eligible students for both ensembles come from among all collegiate units on campus. While Chamber Singers often performs without a conductor, the director of the ensemble is Dr. Stanley Wold (who also is director of music at sister congregation, Gloria Dei). MUSICAL SELECTIONS Pilgrims Hymn --- Paulus Come Away to the Skies --- Mennicke ACCLAMATION Alleluia! The Spirit is here. The Spirit is here indeed. Alleluia! GATHERING DIALOGUE Since Abraham and Sarah, since Mary and Paul, since Luther and Muhlenberg, since 1987 in Columbus: We gather to you, O God. We gather to you, O God. Here is the word of life, here is the water of rebirth, here is the meal of mercy, here is the grateful assembly. Gather us to you, O God. Gather us to you, O God. We gather, wet from the water, We gather, listening to the word, We gather, already the body of Christ. Come, Holy Spirit, and gather us in love. Come, Holy Spirit, and gather us in love. 1

GATHERING SONG Here I Am To Worship Verse 1: Verse 2: Light of the world, you stepped down into darkness, opened my eyes, let me see. Beauty that made this heart adore you, hope of a life spent with you. Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down, here I am to say that you re my God. You re altogether lovely, altogether worthy, altogether wonderful to me. King of all days, oh so highly exalted, glorious in heaven above. Humbly you came to the earth you created, all for love s sake became poor. (Chorus) I ll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross. I ll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross. PRAYER OF THE DAY O God, you have promised through your Son to be with your church forever. We give you thanks for your faithfulness to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and for the signs of your presence in this community of believers, Trinity Lutheran Church. Increase in us the spirit of faith and love, and make our fellowship an example to all believers and to all nations. We pray through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. CHILDREN S MESSAGE Shivon Miller SONG Everlasting God version - Chris Tomlin Verse: Pre Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord, We will wait upon the Lord, We will wait upon the Lord (repeat) Our God You reign for---ev---er Our hope, our strong de---liv---rer You are the everlasting God, the everlasting God You do not faint, You won t grow weary You re the defender of the weak, You comfort those in need You lift us up on wings like eagles (Repeat all) 2

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (2 Corinthians 5:17) Alleluia. If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! Alleluia. FIRST READING: Isaiah 42:5-12 (God declares new things) 5 Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. 10 Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise from the end of the earth! Let the sea roar and all that fills it, the coastlands and their inhabitants. 11 Let the desert and its towns lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar inhabits; let the inhabitants of Sela sing for joy, let them shout from the tops of the mountains. 12 Let them give glory to the LORD, and declare his praise in the coastlands. PSALM 30:4,5,12 Sung by the UMD Chamber Singers 4 Sing praises to the LORD, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. 5 For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning. 12 so that my soul may praise you and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever. SECOND READING: 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 (Everything has become new) 17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. 20 So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. GOSPEL: John 15:1-17 (Christ the friend and lover) 15 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. 2 He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3 You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. 11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your 3

joy may be complete. 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17 I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. MESSAGE Bishop Tom Aiken s Sermon (Video) SONG To Live On Dakota Road To live on in grace and wonder. To reach out and to love each other. To live on. To live on. To live on. Verse 1: Verse 2: We don t always know where we re going. We don t always know what to believe. But we stand inside this hope of freedom, Holding to the faith we have received. (Chorus) Some days we are in life s dark valleys. Some day we are on life s mountain tops. Ev rywhere we go in all creation, We walk in the promises of God. God who made us, claims and saves us, lead us in your love. (Chorus) CCLI# 1330601 CONFESSION OF FAITH THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 4

OFFERING SONG Everybody s Got Something To Offer Verse 1: Verse 2: Everybody s got something to offer; young and old the prince and the pauper. Everybody s got something to offer in the name of the Lord To the lost and the lowly ones the message it is clear; we have all got a gift to give our hands, our hearts, our tears. (Chorus) To the believers gathered here the message it is true; we have all got a gift to give in all we say and do. (Chorus) 5 OFFERTORY PRAYER Gracious God, bless these gifts and our lives. May they be used to glorify you through our obedience to Jesus commandment to love one another as he has loved us. Amen PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE L) Rejoicing with all the witnesses of the resurrection, let us pray in confidence for the church, the world, and all who are in need. Send your Holy Spirit to teach and remind us of the ways of your love. Shape the church by your word and guide the proclamation of your grace for the sake of the whole world. C) You mercy is great. L) We give thanks to you for the members and the ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA): for those who had the vision to begin its life together, those who sustain its present ministry, and those who will carry its mission forward into the future. C) Your mercy is great. L) Reveal to us the splendor of creation and inspire gratitude in our hearts for the yield of the earth. Show us your ways of abundance and healing for the sake of our world. Hear us, O God. C) Your mercy is great. L) Relieve the fears and troubles of those who suffer. Grant shelter to the homeless, assistance to those in any need, and healing to the sick (especially). Hear us, O God. C) Your mercy is great. L) Shelter us in the shade of the tree of life, granting refreshment and healing in our weariness and despair. Strengthen our faith with the witness of all the saints and join our voices together in the song of praise that never ends. Hear us, O God. C) You mercy is great. L) In the resurrection hope we commend to you all for whom we pray, trusting in the promise of new life; through Jesus Christ, our risen Savior. C) Amen

SENDING SONG The Church Song Jay Beech We are the Church, the body of our Lord; We are all God s children, we have been restored. 1. The church is not a building where people go to pray; It s not made out of sticks and stones, it s not made out of clay. 2. You can go to worship but you cannot go to Church; You can t find a building that s alive no matter how your search. 3. The church is not a business, a committee, or a board; It s not a corporation for the business of the Lord. 4. The church, it is the people, living out their lives called, Enlightened, sanctified for the work of Jesus Christ. DISMISSAL Renewed in the grace of God, let us go in peace to serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. ********** PLEASE JOIN US FOR COFFEE AND ANNIVERSARY CAKE DOWNSTAIRS AS WE CELEBRATE THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR ELCA 7
