THE CIRCUMCISION AND NAME OF JESUS NEW YEAR S DAY The Blessing of His Name January 1, 2017 Get to KNOW The God who KNOWs NEWton Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, But seek first the Kingdom of God. (Matt 6:24,32 ESV) WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 3
ENTRANCE HYMN Joy to the World LSB 387 PSALM Psalm 8 (antiphon: v.9) O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Lord God, You made Your beloved Son, our Savior, subject to the Law and caused Him to shed His blood on our behalf. C Grant us the true circumcision of the Spirit that our hearts may be made pure from all sins; 4
P through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit; C one God, now and forever. Amen OLD TESTAMENT READING Numbers 6:22 27 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them, The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. EPISTLE READING Galatians 3:23 29 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ s, then you are Abraham s offspring, heirs according to promise. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE P She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, C for he will save his people from their sins. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 2:21 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb 5

Announcements BUILDING HEALTHY FAMILIES Men marry women with the hope they will never change. Women marry men with the hope they will change. Invariably, they are both disappointed, said Albert Einstein. Thanks be to God who never disappoints and never changes! When our relationships are built on Him, we have our greatest potential for health and wholeness in this life, plus the promise of life eternal with Him. From the staff of LFS, Happy New Year with a toast to happy marriages and healthy families in 2017 and an anticipatory celebration of the amazing life yet to come! Lutheran Family Service of Iowa - 6200 Aurora Ave., Ste 410W, Urbandale, IA 50322 (515-251-4900) LIFE QUOTES We are weary and overwhelmed by a multitude of life issues. Sometimes we are prideful after doubting God s Word and trusting something else. As the culture decays and evil abounds, we may believe that God asks the impossible of us In the face of evil, let it be said of us: Look! They remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and they fight for [their] brothers sons daughters wives, and homes (Nehemiah 4:14). Linda Bartlett, former president of Lutherans For Life - A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life - www.lutheransforlife.org. CELEBRATION Next week (Jauary 8th) we will be celebrating the Baptism of our Lord (and our own Baptism in to Jesus). We will also be celebrating all who have joined our fellowship in recent months with a reception following the service. Don t miss the fun! ST. NICK S As stated in the God is not dead movie.god is good all the time, and all the time God is good. The same goes for the members of Our Savior. LWML would once again like to thank you for the support of the St. Nicks Christmas program. There was just over $2500 received for this worthy cause. We were able to sponsor 16 families, for a total of 46 children. One family we sponsored was a single mom with a special needs child that goes to doctor visits weekly. We were able to help mom out with a gift card to help with gas expense. There was also one family that just needed a car seat. We provided that. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. We would also like to thank all of the special shopping elves that helped with this project. Many hands make this task run smoothly. In the last four years we have provided for 187 children. God is good all the time, and all the time God is good. THANK YOU! A big Thank You to everyone who provided supplies for the Body Shop at the high school.
