Hope Lutheran Church 4131 Lehigh Drive, Cherryville, PA 18035-030 (610) 767-7203 hopecherryville.org September 16, 2012 Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost Three weeks ago we heard John's gospel's version of Peter's confession of faith. This week we hear Mark's version, when Peter says, "You are the Messiah." In John, the stumbling block is Jesus' invitation to eat his flesh, given for the life of the world. In Mark too the scandal has to do with Jesus' words about his own coming death, and here Peter himself stumbles over Jesus' words. But Jesus is anointed (the meaning of "messiah") in Mark only on the way to the cross (14:3); so we are anointed in baptism with the sign of the cross. CHURCH STAFF Pastor Rev. CALLING ALL YOUTH 7 th - 12 th GRADE!! - Youth group is off and running again this year and we are pumped and ready to go! We are starting off this year with the Potato Project in Moselem Springs on Saturday, September 22 nd (This meets the requirement of an outreach event for the catechism program). We will meet at Hope Church at 8am and return around 2pm. All you need to bring along is a pair of gardening gloves. Our group will be assigned to a field where we will pick potatoes for a few hours. Anything we pick, we get to take home with us to donate to our local food banks. At the end of our shift, the people who own the fields usually fry up a batch of freshly picked potatoes (french fries) for everyone to snack on. We may need a few parent driver volunteers so if any parents are interested in joining, please let Steph or Stacey know. Sign up on our youth group board or facebook! Are you on Facebook? So are we! Look us up and join our page "Youth Group Rocks" to keep up to date on events and other information. BIBLE STUDY - a new Bible study and discussion group will begin on Wednesday, October 3rd at 6:30 PM. We will be using the study "DAVID Developing a Heart for God". It includes 12 studies based on the life of David where we will learn that David had weaknesses, fears, doubts and sins but was also a man of faith with a great trust in God and a great desire to please God. As we use this study, we too are reminded that we are human and experience many the same problems and desires that David did. Come and join us at the Bible study. As always, you do not have to be a scholar to participate in our study as we learn and grow together. Six of the studies in this guide are based on readings from 1 Samuel, 4 are based on 2 Samuel and 2 are based on 1 Chronicles and such topics as true friendship, finding strength in our Lord and more will be discussed. The cost will be approximately $6.80 for the booklet. Please plan on joining us at the study on October 3rd. There is a sign -up sheet on the bulletin board (this is only to give us an approximate idea of how many books we must order). For further information, please contact Sharyn Kratzer at 610-261-1277. Thank you, Hope's Evangelism Committee OFFICE HOURS The church office is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 7:30am to 4:00pm. The office will be open on Tuesdays from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Please note that Jane Tretiak is on vacation this week; the church office will be open every day from 8:00am until 2:00pm. STAINLESS STEEL PAN a 9 x 13 stainless steel pan is missing from the kitchen after being used at the yard sale. If you took it home in error, or have found it, please return it to the church office. Thank you!

Our last directory was done in 2008 and many changes have happened with our membership since that time. The more members we have in our directory the better it will be; so get ready to say cheese!
