SERMON: GENESIS CAIN AND ABEL (Genesis 4) Pastor Augie Iadicicco September 16, 2018 MESSAGE NOTES The effects of Adam and Eve s fall into sin quickly become apparent in the story of Cain and Abel. Hatred and death quickly have their way. But in the face of evil, God both exacts justice and gives grace. He forces Cain to wander the earth, but he also protects Cain s life even though he has taken his brother s life. Living in a world is enough to make you! Now Cain said to his brother Abel, Let s go out to the field. While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Genesis 4:8 God both and us in our anger. God teaches us about. 1. does not solve injustice. Genesis 4:8-9 2. God injustice. Mark 15:34 3. God doesn t us justice, He us just. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God s wrath through him! Romans 5:9 How can I live in a fallen world?.. He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act and to love and to walk with your God. Micah 6:8 Questions for individual or group reflection: Where do you see the brokenness of the world around you? Whose death(s) seemed the most unjust to you? What makes you really angry? Do you believe that when you get angry, Satan has an opportunity to exploit or use you? How does God comfort us when we are angry? What warning signs does He give you when you are angry? Have you been tempted to solve injustice with un-just sin? Discuss God s upside down justice in Jesus. Do you really want God to treat you justly? Can you accept that God has freely justified you by grace? How are you able to live as a Christian in a fallen world? (Hint: because of Romans 5:9, you can live Micah 6:8) How is God causing you to respond to this message? Taking it home / Memory Verse: Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God s wrath through him! Romans 5:9

Living in a FALLEN world is enough to make you MAD!

You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment. But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. GENESIS 4:8

8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, Let s go out to the field. While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. GENESIS 4:8

Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind. GENESIS 9:6

3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. 4 And Abel also brought an offering fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering He did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. GENESIS 4:3-5

6 Then the LORD said to Cain, Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it. GENESIS 4:6-7

God both COMFORTS and WARNS us in our anger.

6 Then the LORD said to Cain, Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it. GENESIS 4:6-7

In your anger do not sin : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. EPHESIANS 4:26
