The gospel lesson which includes Thomas doubts does so in the context of a fearful community gathered and visited by Christ who literally breathes into them the Holy Spirit. Fear and skepticism disappear, replaced by hope. What does a hopeful church look like today? I John and the Acts of the Apostles picks up the story later. Here we have a community who is bound together by the love of Jesus Christ for the sake of the gospel. Indeed, it is the very same light of Christ which binds them together that is the same light to be shared with the world. How do we walk as Children of the Light? See Presiding Bishop Michael Curry s Easter message from Jerusalem here. The Rev. Page 3 Parish News FOURTH FRIDAY FELLOWSHIP! Friday, April 27th at 7:00 p.m. we will have fellowship time in Davis Hall. BYOW-bring your own whatever, board games, snacks, refreshments or simply your effervescent presence and spend some time relaxing and hanging out with your St. Clement s family! AFRICAN TEAM MINISTRIES, INC Serving the Churches of East Africa Will Be in Davis Hall April 15th & 22nd Foyers TREASURER S SUMMARY as of February 2018 Pledges TD $33,175.18 Total Income $46,532.20 Total Expenses $47,491.90 Whether you re new to St. Clement s or a long-standing member, one of the best ways to get to know others in our church is through Foyer Groups Foyer Groups are a fun and easy way for parishioners to gather together on a regular but informal basis for purely social reasons to enjoy one another s company, to strengthen bonds of community, to meet new members and just to get to know other people who share a common interest in St. Clement s. There is no agenda or plan just casual fellowship and a refreshing meal. Groups are made up of singles, couples, young people, retired folks, etc., in other words a cross section of the congregation. Out of the meetings, friendships develop among people who might not have any other opportunity to meet and get to know each other. Newcomers are especially invited to join. Sign up in the narthex or contact Trish Cole at patriciaocole@hotmail.com
Sabbath Thinking We are good not in virtue of what we are but in virtue of what we are not, like darkness lit up by a light that enters into it from without. We are not light in ourselves but in virtue of having within us what is light in itself. Kathryn Tanner, Episcopal Theologian, from Christ the Key Page 4 The Sabbath is a day for the sake of life. -Abraham Heschel Risen? In its original setting the Psalm 133 brings together two images. It was sung by pilgrims as they ascended the steps to the temple. It celebrates the joy experienced in communal unity in God. But it also celebrates the home and the extended family as a common basis for blessing even beyond the family unit. Oil of blessing was poured out on a guest as a sign of hospitality. What does it mean that Christ is risen? For his immediate disciples in the evening that day it meant fear. For Thomas it means a species of fear that moves toward a skepticism bred from no longer wishing to be disappointed. I believed, he might say, and see where it got me. But with the risen Christ comes the Holy Spirit and the gift of being sent to proclaim the good news. But what does this look like? In the passage from 1 John we get a snapshot. Here we get a picture of a community which is in fellowship with one another in Christ and whose sending is not in what they say but in what they do and who they are. What does the risen Christ mean for us? Jamie+ Robert Wright, Bishop of Atlanta Reversal To say the Lord is Risen doesn t mean the work is finished. It means that God has raised Jesus from the dead. It means death doesn t get the last word. It means God is able and good and generous. It means that there s no horror we can create that God can t overturn. It means in the graves and under the ground and in the brokenness, God is moving. Stirring. Plotting and carrying out reversal. This year I want the gift of Easter for those who seem trapped in a perpetual Good Friday. For the veterans whose brains are still at war. For the young people in Parkland and Chicago. For the families of Alton Sterling and Stephon Clark. Easter for them and Easter for us all.
