A Letter From the... Desk of the Communications Director This Month in Worship September 2, 2018 (Labor Day Weekend) Being Connected in Worshipping God 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 September 9, 2018 Being Connected in Caring Galatians 6:1-2 September 16, 2018 Guest Pastor Rev. Kathy Moore TBD September 23, 2018 Being Connected in Service Galatians 5:13-14 September 30, 2018 Celebrating Ministry in Our Congregation Ephesians 4:11-13 I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the past few months as the Communications Director. First, I want to give a sincere Thank You to all those whom I have come into contact with over the past 5 months or so. Since starting in this position, I have found nothing but warm smiles, firm handshakes, and stories leading to great laughs. And in working with you and for you, I have found some very genuine and appreciative people. As I look at the future opportunities for my position and First UMC, I am also excited to know that there are so many of you who are open to trying new things; willing to create new traditions; open to new ideas and concepts. And in the coming weeks and months, you may notice some new things relating to communications come into view. One new area will be video message boards around the church. The goal of these boards is to provide updateable digital signage for the church, give vital information to guests within our building, and even provide you with information regarding upcoming events. And there are so many other areas that the entire staff wants to grow, I hope you remain excitedly patient as we connect over the coming year. So again, thank you for you warm hospitality. And I look forward to what the future brings all of us. Jeremy Brinning, Communications Director

A Brief Message from the Finance Committee To All Methodist Men Thursday Book Club The Thursday Book Club will hold their first discussion of the Fall September 6th at 1:00 PM. All are invited to attend. A copy of the book will be available in the Church library. September 8th 8:00 am Light breakfast served UMM will hold our first meeting at 8:00 AM on Saturday, September 8th. A light breakfast will be served. Pastor Tim will discuss reviving Member Care. Questions? Contact Gordon Blacksmith at 515-782-3033. September, 6th at 1 PM Thanks to a higher cash balance at the beginning of 2018, the Finance Committee recommended an imbalanced 2018 budget, which the Administrative Council approved and adopted. Due to the unplanned delayed start of an new Associate Pastor, we have been able to bridge that gap, however this imbalance will not remain practical in the future. On a good note, pledged amounts are on track, and expenses are on pace for 2018. Unfortunately, our non-pledged contributions have not met expectations. To date we have received $38,655 in nonpledge contributions which is approximately $19,000 less than budget, and is 35 percent of the total amount budgeted for 2018. With this information in mind, the Finance Committee has concerns about the ability to fund all expenses in Fall 2018, and the aspirational budget requests for 2019. The Community Engagement Team is working to increase congregational awareness of these interrelated factors. Thank you for your continued financial commitments and contributions to provide outstanding ministries both in Indianola and as a partner for making the world a faithful place. Notes of Appreciation United Methodist Church Members: Thank you so much for being such generous hosts to Wee Care Respite Nursery over the last 28 years. Because of your generosity 6,000 Warren Count children were served, some coming from very difficult home lives. With us working together, we made a difference. Sincerely, Lisa Kerr Gray WeeCare Respite Director Just two small words, Thank You, to express so much gratitude to past and present communion server and ushers. A heart felt thanks to each of you who performed these tasks for First UMC. It has been a gratifying and rewarding experience for us to interact with you. How fortunate our church is to have willing parishioners view these activities as opportunities to serve others! It is time to pass the torch. Sincerely, Sam and Jane Martin To Our FUMC Friends, Thank you for putting your faith into action! You donated more than 900 items for our 2018 School Supply Drice. In addition, donations of more than $800 allowed us to purchase another 300 needed items. All 1,200 items have been delivered to IMPACT Community Action for distribution to qualified low-income families in Warren County. It is anticipated that more than 70 families with 150 children will benefit. Matthew 25 Fund Update: Thanks to your generous contributions, the Matthew 25 Fund helped 10 individuals and families with more than $1200 in rent and utilities assistance in August. THANK YOU from all of the recipients!
