In today s Gospel, Jesus reveals to us what the call to discipleship entails. True disciples are to deny themselves, take up their crosses, and follow Jesus without reservation or hesitation. Jesus invitation to embrace and carry the cross is a clear statement that true discipleship involves challenging those in power in defense of Gospel values. When we are called upon to defend Christ, wherever that may be, whether a peaceful protest outside an abortion clinic, or making our voices heard on matters of economic or social justice in a political or religious court or anywhere, the true disciples of Jesus Christ are to walk boldly to the cross and all that it signifies humiliation, indifference, degradation, and ultimately, hope and resurrection. Pro-life pregnancy centers drew nearly 2 million clients in 2017 and provided more than $161 million in free services, according to a new report released this week. According to 2017 figures, pregnancy centers provided nearly 2 million people with free services, at an estimated annual savings to the community of $161 million. The centers carried out close to 680,000 free pregnancy tests and provided close to 300,000 mothers and fathers with parenting classes. Over 24,000 clients received support after an abortion, including counseling and referral to professional help when needed. Last year, credentialed nurse sonographers and registered diagnostic medical sonographers volunteered over 400,000 hours of free services. In addition, over 67,000 volunteers, including 7,500 medical professionals, donated their time and skills to pregnancy centers. Beyond numbers like these is the incalculable value of lives saved, families strengthened, and women and men finding healing from the trauma of abortion. -- Chuck Donovan, president of the Charlotte Lozier Institute; http://www.ewtnnews.com/catholic-news/us.php?id=18096
