Science and Health 1. SH 503:18 22, 28 14 Genesis i. 3. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. Immortal and divine Mind presents the idea of God: first, in light; second, in reflection; third, in spiritual and immortal forms of beauty and goodness.... God, Spirit, dwelling in infinite light and harmony from which emanates the true idea, is never reflected by aught but the good. Genesis i. 5. And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. All questions as to the divine creation being both spiritual and material are answered in this passage, for though solar beams are not yet included in the record of creation, still there is light. This light is not from the sun nor from volcanic flames, but it is the revelation of Truth and of spiritual ideas. This also shows that there is no place where God's light is not seen, since Truth, Life, and Love fill immensity and are ever-present. 2. SH 504:28 1 Spirit is light, and the contradiction of Spirit is matter, darkness, and darkness obscures light. Material sense is nothing but a supposition of the absence of Spirit. No solar rays nor planetary revolutions form the day of Spirit. 3. SH 584:1 8 DAY. The irradiance of Life; light, the spiritual idea of Truth and Love. And the evening and the morning were the first day. (Genesis i. 5.) The objects of time and sense disappear in the illumination of spiritual understanding, and Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded. This unfolding is God's day, and there shall be no night there. 4. SH 215:15 18 We are sometimes led to believe that darkness is as real as light; but Science affirms darkness to be only a mortal sense of the absence of light, at the coming of which darkness loses the appearance of reality. 5. SH 74:21 23 Darkness and light, infancy and manhood, sickness and health, are opposites, different beliefs, which never blend.
6. SH 474:31 2 (to 1st.) Truth destroys falsity and error, for light and darkness cannot dwell together. Light extinguishes the darkness, and the Scripture declares that there is no night there. 7. SH 72:9-12 As As light destroys darkness and in the place of darkness all is light, so (in absolute Science) Soul, or God, is the only truth-giver to man. 8. SH 510:16-18 The sun is a metaphorical representation of Soul outside the body, giving existence and intelligence to the universe. 9. SH 538:11-13 The sun, giving light and heat to the earth, is a figure of divine Life and Love, enlightening and sustaining the universe. 10. SH 209:5-8 Mind, supreme over all its formations and governing them all, is the central sun of its own systems of ideas, the life and light of all its own vast creation; and man is tributary to divine Mind. 11. SH 510:27 1 Light is a symbol of Mind, of Life, Truth, and Love, and not a vitalizing property of matter. Science reveals only one Mind, and this one shining by its own light and governing the universe, including man, in perfect harmony. 12. SH 300:28-31 The universe reflects and expresses the divine substance or Mind; therefore God is seen only in the spiritual universe and spiritual man, as the sun is seen in the ray of light which goes out from it. 13. SH 266:27-29 (to 1st.) Man is the idea of Spirit; he reflects the beatific presence, illuming the universe with light. 14. SH 139:4 9 From beginning to end, the Scriptures are full of accounts of the triumph of Spirit, Mind, over matter. Moses proved the power of Mind by what men called miracles; so did Joshua, Elijah, and Elisha. The Christian era was ushered in with signs and wonders.
15. SH 200:4 Moses advanced a nation to the worship of God in Spirit instead of matter, and illustrated the grand human capacities of being bestowed by immortal Mind. 16. SH 215:11 Spiritual vision is not subordinate to geometric altitudes. Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life. 17. SH 573:3-5 The Revelator was on our plane of existence, while yet beholding what the eye cannot see, that which is invisible to the uninspired thought. 18. SH 575:7 10 This sacred city, described in the Apocalypse (xxi. 16) as one that lieth foursquare and cometh down from God, out of heaven, represents the light and glory of divine Science. 19. SH 576:3 This heavenly city, lighted by the Sun of Righteousness, this New Jerusalem, this infinite All, which to us seems hidden in the mist of remoteness, reached St. John's vision while yet he tabernacled with mortals. 20. SH 577:19-21 This city of our God has no need of sun or satellite, for Love is the light of it, and divine Mind is its own interpreter. 21. SH 191:8 As a material, theoretical life-basis is found to be a misapprehension of existence, the spiritual and divine Principle of man dawns upon human thought, and leads it to where the young child was, even to the birth of a newold idea, to the spiritual sense of being and of what Life includes. Thus the whole earth will be transformed by Truth on its pinions of light, chasing away the darkness of error. 22. SH 255:3-6 Let there be light, is the perpetual demand of Truth and Love, changing chaos into order and discord into the music of the spheres. 1. Hymn. 172:1-3 Lift up thy light, O man, arise and shine, / Steadfast while loud the storms of life assail; / Immortal ray of that great Light divine, / 'Gainst whose all-power no tempest shall prevail. /
Hold high thy lamp above earth's restless tides, / Beacon of hope to those who watch afar. / Falsehood and fear shall pass, but Truth abides; / Thine be the splendor of her deathless star. / Should the world's sin and sorrow round thee rave, / Pierce thou the dark with Truth's undaunted ray, / Send out its light of joy to help and save, / That more and more shines to the perfect day. 2. Hymn. 282:1, 2 Praise the Lord, ye heavens, adore Him; / Praise Him, angels, in the height; / Sun and moon, rejoice before Him, / Praise Him, all ye stars of light; / Praise the Lord, for He hath spoken, / Worlds His mighty voice obeyed; / Laws that never shall be broken / For their guidance hath He made. / Praise the Lord, for He is glorious; / Never shall His promise fail; / God hath made His saints victorious, / Sin and death shall not prevail. / Praise the God of our salvation; / Hosts on high, His power proclaim; / Heaven and earth, and all creation, / Laud and magnify His name. 3.
