The Journey APRIL 2018 Dear Zion, I recently read a quote from author James Baldwin: Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced. First and foremost, we need to be able to see clearly, and what is required for that vision first and foremost is light. That is the Easter story. Jesus life, death, and resurrection shines light on us, on who we have been and who we are still. Whether or not we will change remains an open question. This is important for people of faith to consider given the too pervasive idea that somehow Jesus had to be sacrificed to make things right with an angry, disappointed God. This makes sense to us because we live as if everything can be counted and calculated. This theology is also attractive because inherent in the idea is the notion that some transaction has been completed, and therefore nothing is left for us to do. Not so. The Easter story not only reveals who we are, it also reveals God. The Light reveals no matter who we are, no matter what we do to a creation that is good, to a gift of life that is vulnerable, to the tenderness of a Loving God, that God will continue to offer a good world, a vulnerable life, and tenderness. Light reveals this to be true over and over and over again. Light reveals a humanity that still crucifies and refuses to see, and a God who resurrects and continually offers vision. Easter offers us a chance to see this truth, to face it, and perhaps change. Then Peter began to speak to them: I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doin good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believe in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. Ephesians 2:1-10 Page 8 A Faith Journey for All
