Note From the Pope, Pope at Angelus: We must remove the vices that prevents God's presence to take root in us! At Sunday's Angelus, Pope Francis asked Christians to declare war on the vices that prevent the seed of God to take root in their soul. POPE FRANCIS "The brambles are the vices that fight against God, which suffocate His presence. They must be torn out. Otherwise, the Word will not bear fruit, and the seed will not develop. At the end of the prayer, he greeted the Venezuelans present in the square. Over the last few weeks, he has recalled the country's dramatic situation. Although he did not mention it, a symbolic consultation of the Venezuelan opposition was being held to stop the constitutional reform. POPE FRANCIS I extend a special greeting to the Venezuelan Catholic community, renewing my prayer for your beloved country. NO WHINING Pope hangs a sign on the door of his room: "No Whining It's either because it's the summer and he is in a good mood, or because he is tired of hearing people turn complaining into a sport. On the door of his room, Pope Francis placed this message: "No whining. In the small print, it reads, Offenders are subjected to a syndrome of victimism that lowers the mood and the ability to solve problems." It says that sanction is doubled if the offense is committed in the presence of children," and concludes with a hopeful message: "To become the best version of yourself, you must focus on your own potential and not on your own limits, so stop complaining and act to change your life for the better." Enjoy your summer with family and friends! Be safe. OUR TITHING PARISH FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME This Year $ 6,646.00 Last Year $ 8,299.00 Youth $ 37.00 MONTH OF JUNE This Year $ 36,840.00 Last Year $ 38,723.00 Thank you for your continued generosity! Note From the Pastor, I would like to offer some observations concerning the ongoing discussions of the proposed new mass schedule for the three parishes of Watertown, when in the future they become three churches but in reality one parish. I realize the parishioners of each parish have deep emotional ties to their specific parishes. I was at one time parochial vicar and then priest in residence at St. Patrick's, then later after being Administrator at St. Paul's in Black River, I was in residence at St. Anthony s for three years except for the three months I spent as Administrator at St. Patrick's. I know well each parish and respect the concerns of each of them. However now that I have been pastor here at Holy Family for the past 15 years, my observations are more specifically gleaned from my experience here, but I believe may apply also to the other parishes as well. When I came to Holy Family, weekly mass attendance averaged between 900 and 1,000. As we count now it is between 700 and 800. Holy Family Church seats comfortably easily from 500 to 600. From all the forms completed it seems apparent to me that everyone s choice and their comments indicated they want things to stay as they are. So it seems that most people do not want to change, and I understand that. Unfortunately, things beyond our control are changing. Fr. Steve NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS 1 Kings 3: 5, 7-12 Psalm 119: 57, 72, 76-77, 127-130 Romans 8: 28-30 Matthew 13: 44-52 or 13: 44-46 The person of true wisdom, like Solomon (1), will seek the reign of God and treasure it above all else (3). It is more precious than gold and silver (Ps). Thus one becomes conformed to the image of Christ, the Son (2). Trooper Joel Davis Joseph Baildon
July 22, 2017 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: It s Time! Say Yes to God s Plan for Married Love. The theme for this year s National NFP Awareness Week (July 23 29) challenges us to embrace God s beautiful plan for marriage. It s time that we reacquaint ourselves with God s design for marriage that has been revealed to us in the Scriptures and Church teaching. It s time that we, as parish families, married couples and as individuals, recommit ourselves to teaching our youth the beauty of the sacrament of Holy Matrimony. It s time to look critically at what society is telling us about love, marriage, and sex in light of God s law of love. Yes, we know it s time. In fact, that is one of the reasons why we have chosen Strengthening Faith Formation in Family Life as an important diocesan priority, particularly through family catechesis. It s time! We need to reclaim our rich faith heritage concerning the Sacrament of Marriage and God s loving plan for husband, wife and children. It s time to support and embrace the precious gift of the family. Whenever we try to bring God into the public square, we are often scolded for imposing our beliefs, our individual morality on others. More and more, expressing concern for the common good and any discussion of right and wrong bring a negative response. It s Time! Say Yes to God s Plan for Married Love. In their pastoral letter, Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan, the U.S. Bishops write that God s plan for marriage is a firm foundation, a truthful guide, a trustworthy light for the way. So, we continue to preach the truth about marriage and responsible parenthood. It remains a trustworthy light for our world, darkened by sin and self-gratification, by fostering faithful and generous life-giving spousal love. This week, the Church engages in a national educational campaign on the gift of Natural Family Planning. NFP is about giving oneself freely, totally, faithfully, and fruitfully to another person in marriage. To many, such a commitment seems nearly impossible today. To make oneself totally vulnerable, to sacrifice for the love of another is the heroism of the marital vocation. Such a self-less witness for life is a tangible sign of hope. Please visit our NFP office at our diocesan website: www.rcdony.org to learn more about this important element of the Church s teaching on marriage. We are truly blessed to have Suzanne and Angelo Pietropaoli serve as our diocesan directors of Natural Family Planning. Please contact them at the NFP office at 518-483-0459 or via email at apietropaoli@rcdony.org for more information or assistance in this important ministry that makes for stronger marriages and healthy, happier families. Faithfully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg JULY 23: SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Readings: Wis 12:13, 16-19/Rom 8:26-27/Mt 13:24-43 or 13:24-30 The tiny mustard seed grows into a big bush (which produces more mustard seeds). A little yeast makes the entire dough rise. A little holiness can have a profound effect on the world. So often we focus on the evil in the world, on the sin and suffering around us. It is easy to let scandal and sin discourage us. Yet, if we know where to look, the Kingdom of God is all around us and growing. It is growing in the person nervously standing in line to go to Confession. It is growing in the teenager who befriends the new kid in the neighborhood. It is present whenever we decide to live our faith out loud and share.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP Nature is filled with words of love, but how can we listen to them amid constant noise, interminable, and nerve-wracking distractions or the cult of appearances (Francis 146). We live in a technologically advanced society where there are many distractions that take place in our everyday lives. Our smart phones, social media, materialism, all distract us from our connection with nature and God. A few simple ways to go back to our roots would be to turn off all the distractions, go for a walk or bike ride, meditate or pray. Instead of planning a large vacation, try a stay-cation where you can reduce your carbon footprint and seek out local attractions in your area or stay at home unplugged from technology.
