This year we are again hosting the week after Thanksgiving, and what better way to show how thankful you are for what you have than volunteering to serve families that are no doubt less fortunate. Hosting IHN provides us a very real opportunity to have a direct impact on some very special families. There are currently 2 families in the program 3 adults and 4 children. The children range in age from 4 months thru 2 years. If you are interested in volunteering as a meal preparer, host or for setting up, there are signup sheets located on the bulletin board outside Amy s office or call Carlista Barttels (253-227-0993) for evening and overnight host volunteers and Judi Easley (288-2649) for room setup/takedown volunteers. Thanks for your help. Mark your calendar! The next Parents Night Out is Saturday, November 17, 4-8 pm. Contact Rachel Lawson at rachelzbeth@gmail.com or (423) 963-4310. Views from the by Susan Lodal Week of November 18 24, 2018 Items of the Week Canned Fruit COMING SOON: 2018 Special Edition Food Pantry Christmas Cards! Be watching for more details. Last year, 118 Food Pantry Christmas Cards were requested and sent to family and friends near and far. Along with end-of-year contributions, this provided an income for our food pantry of $8,767, representing 17.3% of the 2017 Food Pantry budget. More than $111,000 has been donated over the history of our Christmas Card Project and year-end giving since its inception in 1993. Many of our neighbors in this community are in need of food assistance and your donation will help provide for them in the coming months. The house for Darien, Danielle and their children is now complete. The dedication will be scheduled soon, so stay tuned for details! They are so excited to move into their new home. Thanks to everyone who helped make their dream a reality! Holston 2018 Faith Build Update From the Desk of the Parish Nurse, Joyce Caldwell Fueling Up With Though the term "functional foods" currently has no legal definition, it's more than just a clever marketing catchphrase. Functional Foods Healthywomen.org According to health organizations like the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, these are foods that go beyond providing calories and basic nutrition to actually improving your health. They can be whole foods in their natural state or enhanced ones. But to be considered functional there must be research that attests to their benefits when eaten regularly as part of a good diet. The academy points to three main categories of functional foods. First are everyday foods, such as vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, fish and meat with compounds that provide a higher level of nutrition -- think of the probiotics in yogurt and the antioxidants in berries. Next are foods enriched or fortified with food compounds like omega-3 fatty acids. And finally are synthesized food ingredients, like prebiotics. With many functional foods as close as the nearest supermarket, it's easy to add more of them to your diet. For instance, choose fatty fish (think albacore tuna, salmon, herring as a few examples) for dinner -- it's a functional food because of its natural omega-3s. The monounsaturated fat in olive oil may reduce the risk of heart disease, so it makes the list, too. The value of many functional foods lies in their micronutrients, like the polyphenols that give fruits and veggies their rich colors. Research into many of these substances is still in the early stages, but scientists have already identified more than 8,000 "phyto" or plant-based chemicals. Most fruits and vegetables have numerous ones, but research has yet to unravel what specific combinations make them so good for you. So, until researchers learn more, eat fruits and vegetables in every color of the rainbow to get the widest array of nutrients. Copyright 2018 HealthDay. All rights reserved.
