Michigan Ave. Lansing, MI. 48912-2299 My Brother Sir Knights and Ladies of the Fourth Degree: Vivat Jesus! It is hard to believe but another year has come and gone and we are once again reflecting on time. This brings to mind the subject I would like to relate to you concerning time, and what it means to us in our decision making. As many of you know, I do degree work in all 4 degrees. Our Worthy Master called me last week and said that there was a brother in our diocese who had submitted his Form 4 for the exemplification this April as he had finally decided to become a 4 th degree knight. He became ill and went to the hospital and was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. While planning what his approach would be to take care of this he experienced a severe heart attack. His doctor told him he would not make it but about another 30 days. Our Master got this information and we moved into full gear to try and get to the hospital this week and perform a personal ceremony so this man could obtain his 4 th degree before his life came to an end. We were all ready to go and received another call that he had experienced another heart attack and it would be impossible for him to have any visitors at all. The lesson here for all of us is to do today what we want or need to do. As you know from our lesson in the first degree we never know if this opportunity will come around again or when. Keep this in mind when talking to our potential candidates for the exemplification this April 26 th. When they say they do not have time for the 4 th degree, the response should be you don t have time not to do it. They can become members of the 4 th degree and arrange their schedules afterwards to become more or less active. Don t let them miss the opportunity. Remember to send your contact information and birthdays and anniversaries to SK Chris Hanson Thank You Patrons Please get your Form 4 s and monies turned in as soon as possible as we will want to get the candidates ready as soon as possible to avoid the last minute rush. If you have any questions you can contact our membership director Ken Balcer (517) 282-5948, our comptroller Chris Hanson (517-388-0666) or me at (517) 896-8327. If you have not paid your annual dues so far, please do so as soon as possible. We have paperwork for Supreme and the State to complete as well. Chris Hanson again is your contact (517) 388-0666, should you need to talk to him concerning this. Newsletter Staff Editor: SK John Gordon Gordon.j@comcast.net Printing and Assembly: TBD Distribution: SK Gaylend Meeks, WFN Lady Mary Ann and I hope you had a terrific Christmas season and hope that this is a profitable year for you financially, spiritually, and fraternally. I look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting (Jan. 21 7:30- pm resurrection Parish Hall) or when it is most convenient for you and may God s blessings be upon you. Fraternally, Gaylend Meeks - Faithful Navigator Assembly #3334

Prayer for the Sick Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O Dearest Comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us. Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ. Rest your weary ones. Bless your dying ones. Soothe your suffering ones. Pity your afflicted ones. Shield your joyous ones. And for all your love's sake. Amen. We join the Knights not to pay dues and attend meetings, but because of our programs and opportunities to serve as practical Catholics. A Few Comments from the Editor I hope all of our Sir Knights and Ladies had a Happy New Year. With the power outages, ice and snow it was difficult at times to stay in that holiday mood. We were lucky and only lost cable and internet unlike many. Lady Beth fell January 1 st and broke her nose and split her lip but after being at emergency for seven hours we counted ourselves lucky. Her injuries seemed small after seeing the injuries others were there for. She is healing well and we look forward to a great year. John Gordon

Faithful Friar s Words Page 3 Reflections From our Worthy Faithful Friar Fr. George Daisy Dear Brother Knights, So that we may start the new year of on the right foot spiritually I would like to share a few snippets from Pope Francis message for the World Day for Peace which will is celebrated on January 1, 2014. Pope Francis begins his message in this way, In this, my first Message for the World Day of Peace, I wish to offer everyone, individuals and peoples, my best wishes for a life filled with joy and hope. In the heart of every man and woman is the desire for a full life, including that irrepressible longing for fraternity which draws us to fellowship with others and enables us to see them not as enemies or rivals, but as brothers and sisters to be accepted and embraced. Our Holy Father s words are important to bear in mind for they remind us of the hungers and yearnings that have been implanted in the human heart by God. These hungers and yearnings can only be satisfied through living in love and unity with God and living in love and unity with others. Obviously neither of these tasks is easy and making progress in both areas (loving God and our neighbor) requires the assistance of God s grace. As such each and every day we need to spend quality time in prayer with the Lord. So that we be drawn closer to the Lord and receive the grace and strength we need to pour ourselves out in more generous love and service to others. The more we grow in our love for God and the more we pour ourselves out in humble love and service to others. The more our hearts will be filled with joy and peace and the more our lives will be imbued with hope. These are but a few of the many wonderful graces and blessings that God wishes to lavish upon us. My hope and prayer for each of us in this New Year is that we choose to spend our time pursuing the things that truly matter most. In closing I wish each of you and your families a Happy New Year filled with many graces and blessings. Know, as always that I remember each of you and your families in my daily prayers. A d m i r a l s A d v i c e f o r F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 4 Page 5 My Brother Sir Knights, February is dedicated to Passion of our Lord. Although many of us probably don t start thinking about the Passion of Jesus Christ until we reach Holy Week (this year starting April 14 th ), we should constantly think of how our Lord Jesus Christ suffered and died for our sins. One way to do this is to recite the Sorrowful Mysteries when we pray our Rosary to contemplate these events. Interestingly during the month of February we celebrate the feast of St. Moses on February 7 th. Now I know when I hear the name Moses I think of the Old Testament hero that led the Israelites out of Egypt. But St. Moses, who lived in the mid-4 th Century (he died in 372) was a holy man who lived in Syria and was an early leader of the Church. Actually, there are upwards to 6 St. Moses. Also during February the Church celebrates a favorite Saint of mine, St. Daniel. This St. Daniel, who died in 309, was a martyr who was executed for performing good deeds, such as visiting prisoners. Interestingly, there are upwards to 11 St. Daniels, and this does not include the great Old Testament Hero Daniel (you know, from the lion s den fame). Let us keep in mind the good works of these brave Saints and pray for their intercession on our behalf with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. On December 9 at St. Mary Cathedral Bishop Boyea celebrated Mass for the closing of the Year of Faith, the Year of Prayer and the end of the celebration of the 100 th anniversary of St. Mary Cathedral. Honor guard attended from throughout the Lansing Diocese. Resurrection School requested the honor guard for their school Mass on December 12, the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A large picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe was processed in at the start of Mass and musicians from Cristo Rey Church played at the Mass. On December 20 and 21 our honor guard joined Bishop Albers Assembly in showing our respect to SK Hilary Fedewa, a member of Bishop Albers Assembly called home by God. Past State Deputy and Former Vice Supreme Master James Fedewa passed away on December 27. We participated in the Michigan District 2 honor guard call-out in Westphalia on December 29-31. The presence of the honor guard is always appreciated, whether it is by the bishop, school children, or the grieving family of a deceased sir knight. Our service is meaningful and important. There will be a meeting of the honor guard before the assembly meeting on Tuesday, January 21. The meeting will start at 6:45 p.m. Honor guard members, with or without regalia are asked to attend. Anyone interested in learning about the honor guard is encouraged to attend. If you have regalia bring your chapeau, service baldric, sword and gloves. We welcome anyone to join the honor guard.
