October 29, 2017 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS EX 22: 20-26; PS 18: 2-4, 47, 51; 1 THES 1: 5C-10; MT 22: 34-40 In today s Gospel Reading from St. Matthew, a lawyer among the Pharisees again tries to entrap Jesus by asking Him the question, Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest. Jesus response appears multiple times in Holy Scripture, as He says, You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. The Lord then adds another that He cites as almost equally important, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Much has been written and conjectured about both of these, and often the focus is on who our neighbor is. However, there is another element of the second Great Commandment that is worthy of note, and that is loving the neighbor as yourself. Too often people conclude that this means that you have to love yourself first. Most of us grasp what it means to the love the Lord with all we are, although it is nearly unattainable to accomplish. However, that second Great Commandment does not mean that it is necessary for us to love ourselves before we can love anyone else. It means, quite simply, that most of us are concerned with our own interests and our own personal situations. Jesus is telling us that just as we often think of ourselves, we need to take care and have concern for the interests of others as well. In the familiar Prayer of St. Francis known to many Catholics, we sum up what this kind of love to which we are called really is, when we pray, Lord, grant that I might not so much seek to be loved, as to love. Diocesan Pastoral Plan Year II: The City on a Hill Focus: Young Adults (Ages 18-30) Overall Goal: For young adults to be transformed by the Mass as the source and summit of our faith, and allow this to flow into their discipleship. Areas for Reflection: 3) Love Your Neighbor as Yourself Theological Statement: The laity are gathered together in the People of God and make up the Body of Christ under one head. Whoever they are they are [sic] called upon, as living members, to expend all their energy for the growth of the Church and its continuous sanctification, since this very energy is a gift of the Creator and a blessing of the Redeemer. The lay apostolate, however, is a participation in the salvific mission of the Church itself. Through their baptism and confirmation all are commissioned to that apostolate by the Lord Himself. Moreover, by the sacraments, especially holy Eucharist, that charity toward God and man which is the soul of the apostolate is communicated and nourished. Now the laity are called in a special way to make the Church present and operative in those places and circumstances where only through them can it become the salt of the earth. Thus every layman, in virtue of the very gifts bestowed upon him, is at the same time a witness and a living instrument of the mission of the Church itself according to the measure of Christ s bestowal. Lumen Gentium n. 33 i. Do I realize that I have an important and irreplaceable job to do in the world on behalf of Christ and his Church? What is it? ii. Do I see my parish as a force for good in the larger community? How do I personally contribute to this? iii. When I leave after Mass, what does my attitude or actions communicate about my faith? WEEKLY FAITH TOPIC ADORING ANGELS PAUL TURNER Some tabernacles in Catholic churches are decorated with images of two angels. Some churches position two statues of angels turned toward the tabernacle in attitudes of prayer. These images indicate a connection between the tabernacle in church and the Old Testament accounts of the Ark of the Covenant. The ark contained the presence of God represented by three important manifestations: the stone tablets on which were written the commandments, the rod of Aaron, and some of the manna from the desert. The ark was a portable box that the Israelites carried from place to place, so that the presence of God would remain in their midst. According to Exodus 25:22, images of two angels adorned the top of the ark. In Catholic churches the tabernacle is the place to store the leftover consecrated bread after Mass. This reserved Eucharist is for communion to the sick, for adoration, or for sharing in communion at Mass when an insufficient amount of bread is consecrated. Jesus called himself the true bread that came down from heaven (Jn 6:58), alluding to the story of the manna. Just as the manna provided sustenance for the Israelites on their wanderings, so Christ, our bread of life, sustains us on our pilgrimage toward heaven. The Israelites kept some manna in a box, and Catholics keep some of the Blessed Sacrament in a box. To draw the connection between the tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant, many churches adorn the tabernacle or its area with images of adoring angels. They show that God s plan from long ago is realized today. These angels remind believers that Jesus Christ is the presence of God, who takes up a dwelling in our midst.
