Know Someone Who Needs Prayers There are many times in our lives when we come across someone who could use extra prayers especially in these difficult times. As Catholics we know that the most perfect prayer is the Mass and no other prayer that we say would benefit them as much. Consider having a Mass said for your loved ones, living or deceased. Simply come to the office to pick from many available dates and Mass times. There is a suggested donation of $10 for each Mass intention that you request. 2015 Mass Book is now available. 2

It is a way of thanking God for all His blessings by returning to Him a portion of the time, talent and treasure He has given us. Giving of our time and talent involves being with God in prayer and worship and volunteering our time im the Church and community activities that help others. We offer a monthly automated giving program that allows you to better manage your stewardship giving. This program gives you the opportunity to tithe monthly using your credit card. Enrolling eliminates the need for weekly envelopes which saves paper and money Go Green, Save Green!!! To enroll, please stop by the parish office. 4

We pray for them and their mothers, that the unborn will be spared and the mothers will have a change of heart. Our next Prayer Vigil is Saturday, October 18, 8:00AM at Planned Parenthood, 1250 E Apache Blvd., Tempe, (Apache Blvd and Dorsey), Pray the rosary led by our parish priests. Please dress appropriate and bring bottled water. Prayer warriors from our parish, join with other prayer warriors in the 40 Days for Life Campaign which runs from September 24-November 2, 2014. You can sign up for a time slot to go and pray in front of Planned Parenthood in Tempe at the intersection of Apache Blvd. and Dorsey St., not far from the ASU campus. Use the website www.40daysforlife.com to sign up. Call Barb Wirth with any questions 480-383-3671. Hope to see a lot of you out there praying for the unborn! The Challenges of the Unborn One of four pregnancies will be terminated by abortion this year. How can this occur? The baby in the womb has three major challenges to life. The first is apathy. Forty five percent of our population, according to polls has no strong opinion on abortion. Sadly, it appears that the pro-life movement has been unsuccessful in communicating its message in a meaningful way that would be measured by some meaningful conviction by almost half of our society. To make matters worse, it is more offensive (or politically incorrect) to have pictures of aborted babies in the media than the very fact that the pictures demonstrate babies are being slaughtered. In fact, our media will and do show all kinds of atrocities, with one notable exception---aborted babies. The second challenge is neutrality, that is, those who claim to have no position. This is reminiscent of those cowardly people who once said, "I believe slavery is wrong, but I support a person's right to choose to own slaves". There can be no neutrality with the killing of babies. When we consider appointments for public office, our main litmus test should be: "are they pro-life, or pro-death?" with no wiggle room. The third challenge is secularism or the mistaken philosophy that makes perceived personal happiness and convenience the primary consideration for all decisions. No atrocity or injustice is bad if it serves my personal good or makes my life easier. No act is wrong or right, it is just expedient. There is no absolute right or wrong. Saints Who Were Champions of the Poor Saint Marguerite d Youville Foundress (1701-1771) Marguerite grew up in a poor, devout family in Montreal. She married Francois d Youville, a fur trader. To her dismay, Marguerite discovered that her husband was selling liquor illegally to the native people. When Francois became sick, Marguerite cared tenderly for him until is death in 1730. Francois had squandered the family fortune and Marguerite had very little. But what she did have, she shared with the poor. After her elder son entered the seminary, Marguerite moved in with three friends. One day she brought a blind woman home. More sick, desperate women followed. In 1737, the Sisters of Charity of Montreal was born when the four women consecrated themselves to the care of the poor. At first, the strangers entering the sisters house caused the neighbors to suspect that they were carrying on Francois liquor trade. They were called the grey sisters - grey being French slang for drunk. Years later, after the sisters had assumed the administration of the hospital and widened their outreach to military casualties, orphans, slaves, native Americans, and the mentally handicapped, the people of Montreal still called them the Grey Sisters. Marguerite appreciated the name. It will remind us of the insults of the beginning, and keep us humble, she said. Marguerite died in 1771. She is Canada s first native canonized saint. Loving Father, through the intercession of Saint Marguerite d Youville, Make me meek and humble of heart. 6
