NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME My brothers and sisters in Christ, Last year, Jackie Zuppe of North visited the parish and had a bake sale. She was raising money to pay off her college debts. The reason she did this at the parish was because she wanted to enter the convent the Sisters of Life. Convents and religious communities cannot admit women and take on the massive debt that young people incur after graduating from college. This phenomena is also keeping a lot of young men from entering seminaries. Thanks to your support and prayers, Jackie has proceeded from postulancy to the novitiate. She is now Sister Maria Frassati, given the name of Our Blessed Mother and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, a patron of youth. Give thanks to God that this daughter of is further on the path to sacrifice and service as a Religious Woman. Let us continue to prayer for her as she enters a new stage of formation. For more information on the Sisters of Life and a picture of Sr. Maria Frassati please visit www.sistersoflife.org. Father Michael BULLETIN CHANGES Beginning next week, the format for the bulletin is going to change. It will now be a combined bulletin for both St. Mary and St. Charles parish. We have decided to do this to cut down on the work and duplication of putting together two bulletins every week. The information for both parishes will be in the same bulletin. There will be a section for information specific to St. Charles. The parishes are still separate. This does not mean anything for the parishes at the present time except that the two parish bulletins are being combined into one. 1000 CLUB DRAWING The 1000 Club drawing will be held in the sacristy next Sunday, August 16, after the 10 a.m. Mass. All are invited to come and see the winning numbers being chosen! CATHOLIC HOMESCHOOL CONFERENCE The Immaculate Heart of Mary New England Homeschool Conference will be held at the University of Massachusetts Lowell Inn and Conference Center, 50 Warren Street, in Lowell, on Friday, August 14 from 12:00 6:00 p.m. Admission is free and pre-registration is not required. For more information, please visit www.ihmconference.org, email info@ihmconference.org or call 540-636-1946. PARISH/FINANCE COUNCIL MEMBERS For the past two years, a number of parishioners have donated their time to attending monthly meetings to advise me as the administrator of the parish. Instead of having parish council and finance councils meet separately, we decided to hold one meeting because the parish financial pressures at the time needed to be our main focus. This September, we plan on having separate finance and parish council meetings. Some current members will be retiring. If you would like to nominate yourself or suggest the name of another parishioner to serve on one of these committees please let us know. These councils are consultative. It has been helpful for me to hear the opinions, concerns and ideas of the current members. I thank them for their service. It is not glamorous work but is important at the same time. It is also good to have new people come forward. Please consider praying over this and considering this request. More information about this will come in September. FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION AUGUST 15 - MASS AT 9:00 AM AT ST. MARY S Saturday, August 15 is the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is not a holy day of obligation because it falls on Saturday; however, we will have a 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Mary s in celebration of this feast day. Give thanks to God for this Feast. Nothing is impossible for God. Sometimes people have difficulty accepting this teaching. It does not say anywhere in Scriptures that Mary s body was assumed into heaven. How can Mary s body, not just her soul, be in heaven if we humans are still waiting for the Second Coming of Christ? Yet we must remember that the Lord who gave us the laws of nature is not ruled by those laws. What nonsense to put limits on Divine providence and generosity! The Creator of Nature is not bound by nature. Jesus told his apostles that he was going to prepare a place for them in heaven. If the Lord can do this, can he not also make a place for the body of the woman who made a place for him in her body? Mary is in heaven, body and soul, making her the human creature closest to God. May she who said yes to the Angel of the Lord hear our prayers and intercede for us with the God of Mercy.

ST. CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH THE BANALITY OF EVIL Saint John Paul II coined the expression the Culture of Death to describe the contemporary circumstances of devaluing all human life. You may have seen or heard about the undercover video and reporting done by LIVE ACTION. I think this is what he was talking about. John Paul first saw the culture of death emerge as he grew up in Nazi occupied and later Soviet controlled Poland. He grew up near Auschwitz. He was a slave worker. Another philosopher, Hannah Arendt, became famous for saying that the Nazi ideology created the banality of evil. I think what is shown in the video depicts this famous description. The video shows a medical doctor describing how she performs abortions in a way so that she can preserve tissue and baby parts of these infants so that they can be sold for money all the while she is sitting in a restaurant drinking wine and eating salad. the banality of evil. If you have not seen the video, I suggest you go to www.liveaction.org or the Center For Medical Progress website and see it. Five videos have been released so far and five more are set to be shown. There are uncut, unedited versions of what happened as well as an edited versions that gives context. A previous video shows a doctor haggling and joking over the price for buying the tissue from the aborted babies. There is something wrong with a person who would do such a thing and there is something wrong with us because all American taxpayers are supporting this through our government s funding of Planned Parenthood. PROTECT LIFE Is God calling you to use your skills to protect God s precious gift of life? Join the Massachusetts Alliance to Stop the Public Funding of Abortion. They are in need of people to help organize and gather the signatures needed to start this process. There is a role for everyone both behind the scenes and on the front line. Please call Tom Harvey at 617-710-3616 or e-mail saparishforlife@gmail.com. WALTHAM, MA HEARING THE KNOCK In his June 2009 encyclical Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI reminds the world that poverty will not be eradicated unless we rediscover and protect the sanctity of life at every level. Dismissing the unborn as less than human and allowing abortion impedes the work of social justice. He points out with urgency, While the poor of the world continue knocking on the doors of the rich, the world of affluence runs the risk of no longer hearing those knocks, on account of a conscience that can no longer distinguish what is human (n. 75). SAVE THE DATES - CONCERTS ON THE LAWN Mark your calendar for the following exciting concerts on the lawn at St. Mary s & St. Charles.
