A VIEW FROM THE FRONT We are embarking on a journey of spiritual growth throughout 2019. Because of that I want us to focus on what I call the 4 Most Important Things. These things are not necessary to become a Christian, or even to be a Christian. But each of these items is crucial if we are going to grow in our Christian faith. Recently I had a sermon based on these things: Bible study, Prayer, Christian fellowship, and Ministry. For the next few months I want to spend some time looking at each of them. So, let s get started with Bible study. Tips for Reading the Bible Part of the problem with reading the Bible is that we convince ourselves that it is too big to read. Or that it is too hard to understand. Or that it doesn t really have anything to do with our lives in the 21 st century. I disagree with all of those. I believe firmly that if you simply start reading the Bible, all of those concerns will quickly disappear. But to help you get going, let me suggest a few things. You can read the entire Bible in one year by devoting about 15 minutes each day. That may seem like a lot, but that is about the amount of time you spend watching commercials in one hour of prime-time television. 15 minutes is not that much. And this year we are reading only the New Testament together. You can do that in less than five minutes daily. Morning devotions are not more spiritual than evening prayer times. You need to find the time that works for you to do your Bible reading. If your brain works better late at night, do your Bible reading then. There is no right or wrong way to read God s word. Find a version of the Bible that you enjoy reading and that is easy for you to understand. There is not a translation of the Bible that is more sacred than any other. All of our English versions are not the original language anyway. Try the Message, the New Living Translation, or my personal favorite, The Voice. Don t beat yourself up or feel guilty if you miss a few days of reading the Bible. I try to read the Bible every day. But it doesn t always happen. There are times when I am sick and can barely open my eyes. There are days that emergencies happen. And other times, I forget. Here is the key, though, get back to it as soon as possible. It is easy to get overwhelmed if you get too far behind. The Bible has 66 books. There are over 100 chapters. There is a lot of information that comes in almost every genre of literature. It is easy to get discouraged and to feel defeated. Don t let the enemy do that to you. Keep going. Make a commitment and then do the best you can. I know that we can all do it! 2

CHURCH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL UPDATE With the New Year, changes in Leadership Council chairs have taken effect. We would like to express our appreciation for the services of two leaders that have completed their terms of service. Josh Barron has dutifully provided financial leadership during his term. Working with his team to guide our church financial resources to best serve our mission in our community, he has been very successful. He is being succeeded by Chet Rycroft. Chet will be assuming a challenging task to keep our church finances in condition to serve. Jim Herring, as Trustee Chair, has devoted his ability to oversee maintenance of our buildings and facilities including our Child Care and parsonage properties. Jim has devoted countless hours of his time in the maintenance and care of our church with its aging and complex facilities. A special thanks goes to Jim and Susan for preparing the parsonage so our new pastor could move into a refreshed and attractive home. Replacing Jim will be Dave Henzman. Dave brings experience and dedication to the Trustee Chair position. Please express your appreciation to our outgoing leaders and offer your support to our new leader as we work together to ensure Central s service to His kingdom. Leadership Council Chair Charles Giesman Child Care has started the year off with a bang! We had a field trip to CMOE and Parent Teacher Conferences for most classrooms in January. We also opened our doors for a meet and greet for our 8 new infant families and the children that will move to a new classroom on February 4. STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN 2019 We are excited to hold our first ever VALENTINE DANCE fundraiser on February 8. It will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center gym. Tickets are $5 and our church family is invited to attend. Make plans to join us for a fun evening! The Finance Committee and Leadership Team will be sharing our 2019 stewardship campaign soon, which will align with Pastor Miller s vision. Prayerfully consider how God is calling us to support His ministry at Central in the future. 3
