Children in Need of Love, Comfort and Home From Danny Morishige, Catholic Charities Hawaii The following children represent an opportunity. An opportunity for those within our community with discerning hearts to know and love and serve God s plan; thereby spreading the grace of God to these distressed young people. Alicia is a 13 year old female of Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Puerto Alicia Rican and African American decent. She is a special education student who loves School. She loves music and she loves to read to. She is unable to speak and unable to walk or take care of her needs. She does have a comfortable new wheelchair. She has had some problems with her spine curving and has had surgery for this. She understands English and she enjoys going for walks outside and to be take for automobile rides. Department of Human Services (DHS) in Hawaii has permanent custody of Alicia and she is legally free for adoption. Christy Christy is an eight year old female of Hawaiian and Filipino ancestry. She is a friendly and active young girl. She enjoys school and different activities such as reading, dancing hula and arts and crafts. She has had a difficult past and has challenging behaviors due to her early trauma. She needs a home where she is the only child and requires structure, consistency and nurturance. The family must be patient, understanding and willing to commit to Christy realizing that she struggles to make sense of her feelings and emotions. She has made great strides in her foster home and now needs a permanent home and family in order to continue her progress. She is truly a smart, beautiful, sensitive, creative and loving young girl. DHS has permanent custody of this young girl. Jamie is a 13 year old girl in need of an adoptive family that can embrace her Jamie unique qualities. She is of Caucasian decent and experiences symptoms of Asperger s Disorder. She is shy when you first meet her, but is very friendly. She has an excellent memory and enjoys meeting new people. Her interests include arts and crafts, reading, drama, dancing and singing. Like a typical teenage girl, she loves expressing her individuality through clothes and make up. Jamie s favorite colors are pink and black. Her strengths include her academic abilities and goals for the future. She averages A s and B s in school and has aspirations of going to college. Some challenges that she faces are frustration and anger due to her feelings of not being understood. Jamie needs a family that is able to give her one-on-one attention and will support her through future decisions that need to be made in her life. A single parent or family without young children that can provide patience and a structured environment would best meet her needs. Catholic Relief Services Responds to Drought in East Africa From Office of the Bishop A drought in East Africa, complicated by political instability in Somalia, has led to desperate conditions for millions of people. Your Church is responding through Catholic Relief Services that has worked in the region for decades. Many CRS projects that you have supported over the years have made communities better able to withstand this drought, alleviating their suffering. But many are still suffering, including Somalis who live beyond the reach of humanitarian aid and are fleeing to neighboring countries seeking help. CRS is responding to their needs. Teddy Gaquit, Hospital Ministry, Director/Chaplain Are you a Eucharistic Minister with a couple of hours to spare each week? If so, the Hospital Ministry needs your help. Volunteers are in short supply, especially those who can give Holy Communion to a sick patient. The success of our ministry in local area hospitals lies directly with our volunteers. Without these valuable servants, the priests in Hospital Ministry would struggle to meet the needs of Catholic patients. IRS Raises Standard Mileage Rate for Second Half of 2011 From the Finance Office In response to rising gasoline prices, the IRS has raised the standard mileage rate for business use of an automobile from 51 cents per mile to 55.5 cents per mile, effective July 1. The medical and moving standard mileage rate increased to 23.5 cents per mile, also on July 1. The new optional standard mileage rates will apply until superseded by future guidance and can be used by taxpayers to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile. Alternatively, taxpayers can instead use their actual costs, but must maintain adequate records and be able to substantiate their expenses. The standard mileage rate for services to charitable organizations is set by statute at 14 cents per mile and remains unchanged. 6

Life Issues Forum The High Costs of Free Birth Control From the Respect Life Office On July 21, the health news site Natural Society (http://naturalsociety.com) featured these breaking news headlines: Newer Birth Control Pill Linked to Higher Risk of Blood Clots ; Birth Control Increases Risk of Contracting, Transmitting HIV ; and finally, Medical Panel Pushes for Free Birth Control for Women. Hmm, one might ask, who was on this medical panel? Dr. Kevorkian? But no, it was the Institute of Medicine (IOM), advising the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on preventive services for women to mandate in virtually all private health plans under the new health care reform act. HHS says it delegated this task to the IOM so people would see the outcome as based on science rather than politics. But IOM s report seems based less on science than on the ideology of authors who share Planned Parenthood s (PP) view of sex and procreation, several of whom have served on the boards of PP affiliates and other pro-abortion organizations. The report says enhanced access to contraception will reduce abortions, though there is ample evidence against that claim (see www.usccb.org/prolife/issues/contraception/contraception-fact-sheet-3-17-11.pdf). In fact, the panel recommends that health plans must cover all drugs approved by the FDA as prescription contraceptives including the newly approved emergency contraceptive called Ella, which like RU-486 can cause abortion weeks into pregnancy. When asked about a conscience exemption for those who have a moral or religious objection to this, an IOM spokesperson said it wasn t her panel s job to take account of other people s personal feelings. Many fear HHS will take the same approach. Secular news media Time, U.S. News, USA Today, L.A. Times obediently repeated the panel s public relations message that it is offering free birth control for women. That message is nonsense. Currently women who want birth control coverage pay for it through their premiums, and sometimes also have a co-pay or out-of-pocket expense. Under the new mandate they will still pay for it, but the cost will be buried in the overall premium and everyone else, including churches and other religious employers as well as individual Catholics, will be forced to pay for it in their premiums too, so payments coerced from those who object will make birth control coverage a bit cheaper for those who want it. And what about the cost in women s lives from those blood clots and cases of AIDS? Researchers have known about both problems for years. In 2005, for example, a study funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control noted: The positive link between pill use and HIV infection was supported by a meta-analysis of 28 studies, including seven prospective studies. Most American women haven t been told this. Ironically, other preventive services recommended by the IOM includes screening for sexually transmitted diseases. But why would you mandate something that can cause what the other services on your list seek to prevent? The other big cost, of course, is the cost to freedom of religion and respect for conscience. Though not alone in its view, the Catholic Church has long been prophetic and counter-cultural in warning that artificial contraception and sterilization do not enhance women s well-being. No American, of 7

course, is required by law to believe that teaching. But should the government, in the name of all Americans, now coerce even the Church s institutions into acting on the opposite view -- when the evidence supporting its message is stronger than ever? A popular teacher and artist on the faculty of Chaminade University of Honolulu, her previous exhibitions have marked the movement of her art from her homeland, through Asia and Europe, across the North American continent to the shores of Hawaii and now back to Germany. Diocese Hires South Carolina Principal as New School Superintendent From Patrick Downes, Editor, Hawaii Catholic Herald The diocese has hired Michael M. Rockers, the principal of St. Francis Elementary School of Hilton Head Island, S.C., as the new superintendent of Hawaii Catholic Schools. He starts on September 1, 2011. Rockers, 56, had been a Minnesota, Arkansas and principal and Carmen Himenes, the superintendent since 1997. Catholic educator for 34 years in South Carolina, serving as a teacher, superintendent. He is replacing Hawaii Catholic Schools The new superintendent was picked from a field of about 20 in a nationwide search begun in January, said Dara Perreira, Human Resources Director for the Diocese of Honolulu. The search committee, made up of a local Catholic school principal, a pastor, a diocesan finance council member, a diocesan school board member and several Catholic community leaders, was impressed by the candidate s experience as a superintendent, his familiarity with strategic planning and his fund development skills, Perreira said. Rocker s was born in Austin, Minn., on September 8, 1954. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 1977 from Winona State University in Minnesota, he began his educational career teaching sixth grade at St. Augustine-St. Edward s Catholic School in Austin. He received a Master of Science degree in community counseling from Winona State University in 1984, and in 1985 was named principal of St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School in Rogers, Arkansas. Eight years later, in 1993, he was appointed superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Little Rock, Arkansas a system of about 35 schools. At the time of his appointment, the previous superintendent, in an article in the Arkansas Catholic, the newspaper of the Diocese of Little Rock, described Rockers as a recognized leader and innovator in providing quality Catholic education. As superintendent, Rockers helped implement VISION 2000, a plan to get all the schools set up with endowment funds, according to Malea Hargett, editor of the Arkansas Catholic. Rockers also established the Catholic Schools Endowment Trust Fund to assist teachers and administrators who wanted to continue their education. Five years into his job as superintendent, Rockers earned a doctorate in educational leadership in 1998 from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He also has an advanced certificate of catechist formation from the Diocese of Little Rock. In 2001, Rockers was named the principal of Catholic High School in Little Rock, an all-boys school described by Hargett as being steeped in tradition with a time-honored legacy. He served there until 2005 when he moved to South Carolina to be principal of St. Francis. Last year, he was named the South Carolina Private School Principal of the Year, receiving the Dr. Charles Armar Educational Leadership Award. Rockers had served as board president of the National Federation of Nonpublic School State Accrediting Associations, the Arkansas Nonpublic School Accrediting Association and 11

the Little Rock Scripture Study Board of Directors, and as a member of numerous other educational boards and associations. He and his wife Lori of 35 years have four children and 12 grandchildren. Himenes has been superintendent of Hawaii s Catholic schools for 14 years and a Catholic educator since 1974. She announced her retirement last November. Her last day was supposed to be June 30, but Bishop Larry Silva asked her to continue until Aug. 31. The superintendent oversees the Hawaii Catholic Schools office, which provides support services to about 40 Catholic preschools, elementary schools and high schools in Hawaii in matters of Catholic identity and mission, administration, personnel and curriculum. Located at St. Stephen Diocesan Center, the schools office offers leadership and assistance in the professional development of principals and teachers, orientation for pastors, accreditation of schools, strategic planning and legislative action pertaining to issues of private education, among other activities. Himenes retirement comes as the bishop launches System for Success, a 20-point strategic plan for the future of Catholic schools in Hawaii. From Fr.
