PREPARING FOR THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS The Liturgy of the Word On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, Catholic parishes in the United States will begin praying the texts of the Mass using a new English translation of The Roman Missal. This week, we explore the Liturgy of the Word. We know from the Gospels that Jesus himself listened to the inspired word of God and let it shape and form him. Through the liturgy, we do the same. The readings we hear at Mass can teach us, but that is not their primary function. Rather, the scriptures are meant to reveal the Lord to us, to let us experience God s presence, and to form us in our Christian identity. In the readings proclaimed at Mass, we hear the voice of Christ himself, and we recognize the story of God acting in the past and in our own lives as well. The homily helps us to see these connections more clearly. Then through the Profession of Faith (Creed) and the Prayer of the Faithful, our response to the readings prepares us to enter into the Eucharistic Prayer that follows. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Defense of Marriage Act Wins Passage The North Carolina Senate has approved the Defense of Marriage Act, referred to as the Marriage Amendment. The vote, which followed approval by the State house, will place the proposal before the voters in May 2012. The Senate vote was 30-16, the exact number needed for the three-fifths required for a constitutional amendment. The Amendment, which was actively supported by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of Raleigh and Bishop Peter J. Jugis of Charlotte, provides that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that should be valid or recognized by the state of North Carolina. I commend the North Carolina lawmakers who voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act, allowing the people of North Carolina to vote May 2012 on this important constitutional amendment, Bishop Burbidge said. I extend my sincere gratitude to all who worked on behalf of this amendment, but our work is not done. I remain committed to work with all who want to preserve and protect the true essence of marriage as a union of one man and one woman. If approved by the voters, it would immediately become law. Couples For Christ Couples for Christ is a family life renewal program open to married couples and their families in the Raleigh Diocese. The program seeks to provide the attendees with a renewed understanding of God's call to a renewed Christian life. Sessions are every Saturday from 6:30-8:30 pm at St. Thomas More. Childcare and refreshments are provided. For more information, please contact Dean and Tet Ablan Email: deanablan@yahoo.com Phone: 919-273-0471 SISTERS APPRECIATION DAY On Saturday, September 17, 2011, the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge met with consecrated Women Religious of the Diocese for Sisters Appreciation Day, an annual day of prayer, dialogue and recognition of the role Sisters play in spreading God s Word and serving His people. The event, held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Raleigh, began with Mass celebrated by Bishop Burbidge. Concelebrating were Msgr. Jerry Sherba, Vicar Judicial and Chancellor of the Diocese, the Bishop s Delegate to Religious Serving in the Diocese and a member of the Diocesan Council of Religious; and Fr. John Forbes, Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes. In his homily, the Bishop spoke of the Sisters as exemplifying the words in the day s Gospel, embracing the word of God with a generous and good heart and bearing fruit through perseverance. More than ever, he said, it is essential that we help the people we serve to understand and to embrace the gift of perseverance. There are so many voices in our world telling people, At the first sign of struggle in pursuing a goal, move on. The example of your life, the Bishop told the Sisters, will help others to focus on Jesus Christ and...to reject the voices of this world and embrace the gift of perseverance. At the Offertory, the name of each of the Sisters was read, followed by the number of years she has offered her service in the Diocese of Raleigh. Following the Mass, the Sisters gathered for a discussion with the Bishop, each speaking in turn about the ideals and the people who energized them in their ministries. Luncheon followed the discussion.
