Loaves & Fishes Once upon a time, when I lived in a small community there was a soup kitchen that served two meals a day to our local homeless and people in need. It turned out that I knew some of the board members and volunteers, so I really trusted the integrity of what they were doing and how they were spending their funds. I gave an initial donation and was added to their mailing list and began receiving their monthly newsletter, which included a small donation envelope. At that time I decided that I could easily afford to send a check for $5 every month, being reminded by receiving the newsletter and envelope. Eventually, as my income increased, I was able to increase my donation to $10-$15, and ultimately to $25 per month. I felt very good about being able to tithe that much each month to a cause I believed in, whereas to give a lump sum of $60, $100 or even $300 once a year would have been very difficult for me. Since I left that small tightknit community, I now consider Newman my spiritual home. Our local parish group, Loaves and Fishes, hosts a monthly sitdown dinner for hundreds of guests. (They also serve meals at other locations at various times during the week.) As technology has progressed I no longer feel the need to send a monthly check to any of my favorite charities. I am happy to have my small monthly donation taken straight out of my debit or credit card. Over the year it really adds up! And I know that my donation is greatly appreciated by those who so lovingly volunteer for Loaves and Fishes. Try it for yourself. You might start off with $5 or $10 per month and see if that impacts your lifestyle in any noticeable way other than making you feel happy about your contribution to such a worthy cause! Anon E.
