Stewardship ~ All people are God s stewards, because everything that exists belongs to God ~ BELIEVING IS SEEING ~ I love watching replays of great sports highlights. Sometimes you see something so extraordinary that you tell others they have to see it to believe it. The one-handed catch, the in-the-park home run, and the photo finish are all examples of these types of moments. They are amazing feats that boggle the mind. I wonder how many people in biblical times saw Jesus perform miracles and told others they wouldn t have believed it unless they saw it with their own eyes. Of course, we believe the stories of his miracles, and we didn t see them in person. We do believe them, don t we? There is no television program that features replays of the actual miracles Jesus performed 2,000 years ago. However, there are miracles every day for the world to see. Many of those come about by allowing God to work through us. People are waiting to be healed and fed, and mountains are waiting to be moved. There might not be a replay for these miracles either. However, people will be amazed by the power of God. Jesus said we could do these things if we had faith. Blessed are those who believe but who have not seen. Furthermore, blessed are those who perform great works with God so that others may see. ~Gospel Reflection~ Our Gospel passage and the Second Reading from the letter of St. James urge us to examine our lives for anything that is keeping us from loving God above all else. Jesus says, If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. St. James warns, Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth-eaten, your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you. The urgency of our need to detach from all that is not God is clear. When we hold onto possessions too tightly, they come to possess us. The stuff can easily become the focus of our energy and attention. Attachment to material things slowly and steadily corrupts. The spiritual discipline of tithing or stewardship of treasure can help us with this. Tithing leads us to let go of unhealthy attachment to material things and leads us to attach instead to God, relying on Him as our true source of security and happiness. We come to understand that all that we have is a gift from our loving Father and we use it to bless others and glorify Him. Amazingly, we actually enjoy material gifts, and all other gifts, moreas a result because we realize where they really came from and are using them as God intended. What wonderful freedom there is in living this way! Copyright 2018 Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc. ~40 Days for Life~ Sept. 26 Nov. 4 The 10th Billings 40 Days for Life campaign is fast approaching. Help us witness to the sanctity of every human life by scheduling an hour per week (if possible) to be a peaceful, prayerful presence in front of Planned Parenthood s abortion clinic in Billings Heights, which draws girls and young women from all over eastern Montana as well as from Wyoming and the Dakotas. We need at least two people praying at all times from 6 am to 8 pm in front of this facility during the 40 days of the campaign. For more information or to sign up for a prayer shift in front of the abortion clinic, contact Amy (855-3737 or 962-3260) or Alvina (860-5553 or 259-3168). Remember Christ s words, Whatsoever you do for the least of these little ones, you do for Me. Do something beautiful for Jesus by standing and praying for the least of His little ones! LIFE CHAIN on Respect Life Sunday (Oct. 7th) Join pro-life people in the Billings area on Sunday, Oct. 7th at 2 pm for our 11th annual Life Chain an international movement that consists of a peaceful, prayerful, public witness of pro-life people standing for 90 minutes, praying for our nation and for an increased respect for the inherent dignity of ALL human life, from the moment of conception. Meet at City Brew at King Ave. & 24th St. W. Rain, snow, or shine, we ll see you there! For more information, call Amy (962-3260 or 855-3737)
