A Message From Our Pastor Thank you for the beautiful cards, kind wishes, gifts, and prayers on the occasion of my 29 th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. Thanks, as always, for your many signs of support, encouragement, and affection! Be assured that you are remembered daily in the celebration of the Mass and in my prayers. Last October I informed you that Cindi Beurskens who has served the parish as Director of Religious Education and Safe Environment Coordinator offered her resignation effective the summer of 2018. At that same time, Pat Bjork offered her resignation as Secretary while retaining her position as Bookkeeper. Traci Campion was subsequently hired as Administrative Assistant (replacing the former position of Secretary) as well as Director of Religious Education and Safe Environment Coordinator. Earlier this week Pat Bjork informed me that she desires to retire completely. In her usual generous fashion, Pat will continue her bookkeeper duties until the position is filled. On behalf of the parish and in my own name I thank Cindi and Pat for their many years of service. Please contact me if you would like more information about the position of Bookkeeper which is open immediately. Once parishioners have had the chance to express interest, this employment opportunity will be advertised beyond the parish. Barney Casey, Jr. the fourth son of Bernard Barney Sr. and Ellen Casey was born on November 25, 1870, in the family s three-room log house near Prescott. On December 18 he was baptized Bernard Francis Casey at Prescott Saint Joseph Parish then a mission of Saint Patrick Parish, Hudson. Less than three years later the growing Casey family moved to a 12 X 30 log cabin at Big River. The Casey farm was part of an area called The Trimbelle after the nearby river. That their new home was near our Saint Mary Parish and school was an important consideration for the devout Casey family. Although young Barney s job was to help his mother in the kitchen, occasionally his chores took him into the fields especially as he grew older. The Casey family remained at Big River until 1882 when they moved to Burkhardt. Years later Barney Jr. now Father Francis Solanus Casey, OFM Cap. recalled life at Big River: Those hills formed a great part of our pasture lands where we boys... used to watch the cattle and study our catechism. Sometimes we d roll rocks down the hillside... or pick berries, or fish and swim till the cattle would stray away and get into mischief. Then we would have our own anxieties finding them. Sometimes we got our medicine for carelessness. Because Saint Mary Parish was an integral part of the formation in faith of Father Solanus Casey, the Franciscan Capuchins wanted us to have a first-class relic of the now Blessed Solanus Casey. We are so grateful for this amazing gift! Although he died in Detroit on July 31, 1957, his feast day is celebrated on July 30 since July 31 is already reserved in the Church s liturgical calendar as an obligatory memorial of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Our parish proudly celebrates this first feast day of Blessed Solanus Casey with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at 8:30 am. At the conclusion of the Mass the faithful will be offered the opportunity to venerate the relic of Blessed Solanus Casey and receive a blessing. I had hoped that we could make a pilgrimage to see the two sites in our area made holy by the presence of Blessed Solanus Casey. All that remains of the log cabins of his birth and that where he spent the majority of his childhood are rocks of the foundations. The site of his birth near Prescott had been owned by devout Catholics who erected a statue of Father Solanus. Unfortunately, recently the land was divided into two parcels and sold. The new owners have refused us permission to visit the site. Thanks be to God, however, we will be able to access the Big River site where Father Solanus grew up. Because it is surrounded by crops, our parish pilgrimage to that site will be after the harvest this Fall. Watch the bulletin for details of this upcoming pilgrimage. Speaking of pilgrimages, time is running out to join me on a pilgrimage to Italy this November 5-15! It promises to be a moving experience as we pray at the holy sites of the Eucharistic miracle of Bolsena (Orvieto), Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi, Saint Catherine of Siena, the Eucharistic miracle of Lanciano, Saint Michael the Archangel at Monte Sant Angelo, Saint Padre Pio at San Giovanni Rotondo, Saint Benedict and the Abbey of Montecassino, as well as the many sites in the great city of Rome itself. The deadline to receive the $100.00 discount has already passed but there is still time to register! Space is limited and filling fast as the pilgrimage is now being marketed nationally. You must register before August 5. Brochures are available at the entrance of church or by contacting Father Louis. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us! Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us! Blessed Solanus Casey, pray for us! Father Kevin C. Louis, STL P a g e 4
