History of the Lord s Church; 04186; Page 2 of 5 1. The seed is the word. 2. Jesus warned of false prophets and teachers 15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves (Matthew 7.15). C. While the church did well at first, the Spirit gave warnings: 1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons (1 Timothy 4.1). 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables (2 Timothy 4.3 4). 1. The drift began in the governing of the church. 2. Remember Jesus is the only head both in heaven and on earth: 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28.18). D. [Charts] 1. Separate priesthood 3. Holy water 4. Mass 5. Transubstantiation 6. Sprinkling 7. Etc. III. A Desire to Return to the Scriptures A. Many people craved the word of God 1. Bibles had only been in Latin and 2. reserved just for the clergy B. For about 3 centuries men started turning to the Scriptures 1. This set the stage for The Reformation 2. This was all dangerous C.
