From The Pastor.. It is hard to believe, but another new year is upon us, and with that new year comes many challenges and many new opportunities. Our church (and most every church) is facing the challenge of the passing of time and the challenge of major cultural shifts that directly impact the life and health of the local church. The passing of time is effecting the health of many churches as older generations find it more and more difficult to physically keep up the pace of attendance and ministry involvement, as well to bare a major part of the financial burden of keeping ministries funded. At the same time, many younger generations no longer feel welcome in or sense the need to be involved in a traditional church and are simply dropping out. Others are choosing to attend a church that is made up entirely of young people, which in my view eliminates the Biblical pattern of the older having the privilege of mentoring the younger, and the younger giving life and a hope to the older. Even as the church faces these challenges, I am encouraged by the fact that God is still in charge of all things and will never allow His Church to die, Jesus is Lord and is still in business of building His Church, and God's Word is still the truth and the means God has chosen to reach a lost world for salvation and to spiritually grow those who are being saved. That being said, I am more committed than ever to the task of preaching God's Word in a systematic fashion week by week. I know that the Gospel of Christ is the only hope for a lost world, and preaching that Gospel is the only way to bring life and health back to a church that is in a battle for its future. Not only will I continue our fruitful study of Acts in January on Sunday mornings, and do various subject and book studies on Sunday and Wednesday evenings, but we are going to have a very good line-up of guest speakers in 2018. Larry Wynn, who now heads up the Church Revitalization Department of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, will be filling our pulpit Sunday morning, February 18, and prayerfully meeting with our staff to give us words of instruction and encouragement. Jim Shaddix, a former pastor and current preaching professor at Southeastern Baptist Seminary, will be proclaiming God's Word at Macland on Sunday morning, April 15, David Allen, the dean of the new School of Expository Preaching at Southwestern Seminary, will be returning to Macland on October 7, and former SBC president, Jerry Vines, will once again be filling our pulpit on Sunday morning, November 18. I am also committed to rebuilding a men's ministry at Macland (so the ladies of our church don't leave us behind in a cloud of spiritual dust). Former Associate Pastor Steve Duvall did his best to build a men's ministry through special dinners that included testimonies and prayer which I thought were very effective. Though we do not currently have an associate pastor, I am determined that we are going to build on that effort with several special events in 2018. We are planning on offering Saturday morning men's breakfasts on January 20, March 17, and April 21, a men's steak dinner fellowship on Friday, June 15, and a Wild Game Banquet on Saturday evening, September 15. Ty Mitchell has agreed to be our guest speaker for the first men's breakfast in January, and I am sure God will bless us through his message. I have also lined up my very good friend, Harold Fanning, to be our speaker at our Wild Game Banquet, and to stay on and preach on Sunday morning, September 16. Dr. Fanning was raised in Lickskillet, Alabama (no kidding about the name), and wrote a book some years ago entitled, Life in the Skillet, which is filled with many humorous stories of what it was like to have grown up in the rural south in the 1950s and 60s as well as in our current day. He is also a former pastor of note, and a very gifted and powerful preacher of God's Word. I think he will be a blessing to us as he was this past September. Even as we face many challenges in the year ahead, I think we have many new opportunities to look forward to with great anticipation. I have faith that God is going to pour out a tremendous blessing upon our church, that we are going to see many souls saved for His glory, and that hearts and lives are going to be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. Please continue to pray for me and the rest of the staff as we seek to follow God's leadership and to carry out His work. Dr. Richard Walker

Student Ministry As we enter in to 2018 my prayer is that the students come to a greater understanding of Jesus and what it means to be a disciple. In the next few weeks we will finish our current study on how to acknowledge evil and how to overcome it the answer is Jesus. We will soon start studies to prepare the students heart, mind, and soul for the missions opportunities over the summer. Our students struggle with temptation, stress, and sin like never before. The world is changing and it s only getting harder for students to proclaim their faith in school and in front of their friends. They need our prayers as we start a new year and they finish out this last semester. DNOW is March 9-11 and we will need host homes for students to stay. We will need approximately 8-10 homes for Friday and Saturday night. We have invited Global Youth Ministry to come back with Roger Glidewell, the Global band, as well as group leaders. Now that January is here advertising and details will start to come together so be on the lookout. Also, be on the lookout for volunteer opportunities. DNOW serves more than just our students. They invite many friends from the surrounding community to gather and worship with us and we need solid volunteers and small group leaders to assist them and give an example to. If you are interested in volunteering as a small group leader or have experience with decorations, or just want to lend a hand please see me. Then He said to His disciples, the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few Preschool Ministry (Infant K5) Matthew 9:37 Cody Carter, Interim Student Minister cody@maclandbaptist.org It was once said to me, the preschool ministry is one of the most crucial areas in ministry because you are one of the first to lay down the foundation for Christian principals. As children develop, their understanding of these foundational truths grows with them. Let s look at how we build on these foundations in the Children s Ministry. Truth: God Loves Me Younger Preschool (Infants): God loves me Middle Preschool (2-3yo): God will always love me Older Preschool (4-5yo): No matter what happens, God loves people Younger Kids (6-7yo): Good and bad happen to people, but God still loves them Middle Kids (8y-10yo): People can learn to respond in positive ways to what happens to them. Preteens (11yo-12yo): People can live with joy regardless of their circumstances. *Adapted from Bible Studies For Life Overview Won t you take part in helping in this important task? Let s help our children build strong foundations in their faith. Contact Tasia@maclandbaptist.org for more information on how you can serve in the Preschool Ministry. 4

Be the One to make the difference in the life of a child. There is always a need for additional volunteers for the preschool rotation on Sunday mornings, Sunday nights, and Wednesday nights. MACLAND BAPTIST 3732 Macland Rd. Powder Springs GA. 30127 Phone: 770-943-5511 Fax: 770-943-3720 Forward By Faith We are on the Web WWW.MACLANDBAPTIST.ORG Macland Baptist Church is called to proclaim the Gospel of Christ and the beliefs of the evangelical Christian faith, to maintain the worship of God, and to inspire in all persons a love for Christ, a passion for righteousness, and a consciousness of their duties to God and their fellow human beings. We pledge our lives to Christ and covenant with each other to demonstrate His Spirit through worship, witnessing, and ministering to the needs of the people of this church and the community. Our Southern Gospel Worship service is an exciting worship experience that features many of the old gospel hymns of the church, hymns that many of us grew up singing. Ministry by local Southern Gospel Quartets, Solos and other Musical Groups are part of the worship experience each month. We offer a Sunday morning Sunday School at 9:15 and Worship service at 10:30am. Other ministries our church offers are Awana, GA s, Mission Friends, TeamKid, and WMU. We have weekday and weeknight ladies Bible studies and a growing number of specialized classes for adults on Wednesday evenings in addition to our prayer service. We offer a special midweek student worship and Bible study. Our goal in providing these programs and opportunities is to train and equip the body of Christ to do the work of the ministry and to reach a lost world for Christ.
