THE SUBURBAN CONNECTION From the Pastor s Desk: When God Sends Revival APRIL 2018 Acts 1-2 At Suburban, we have been praying for God to send revival, for the Lord to pour out His Spirit upon us. By God's grace we are going to keep asking, seeking and knocking until the Lord sends revival to Suburban. I do believe that it would be helpful for us to see what revival looks like...to have a clear picture of God pouring out His Spirit upon His people. This will help us to know what to expect when God pours out His Spirit of revival upon us. In Acts chapters 1and 2 the Lord pours out His Spirit upon His people... Revival comes to Jerusalem. As we examine these chapters there are some clear indicators of revival. 1. The church DEVOTED THEMSELVES to PRAYER. (Acts 1:14) It was in the environment of PRAYER that God sent revival. Prayer always, always precedes revival. I want to call each of us to pray every day for revival. Oh, may we, with all our hearts seek the Lord for revival. 2. The church IMMERSED THEMSELVES in the WORD. (Acts 2:16-21) In Acts chapter 2, Peter quotes extensively from the prophet Joel. He quotes from Joel to explain why the apostles are speaking of the mighty works of God in different languages. It's not because they are drunk with wine but because they are filled with the Holy Spirit as Joel prophesied would happen in the last days. In other words, Peter and the apostles had been meditating on the Word of God and were able to explain to the people what was going on. The Word of God always, always prepares the people of God for the pouring out of the Spirit of God. 3. The church PROCLAIMED THE GOSPEL AND PEOPLE WERE SAVED. (Acts 2:22-41) Peter and the apostles boldly proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ...that Jesus died for their sins, was buried and rose again on the third day. Upon hearing the Gospel, it says that the people were cut to the heart and ask what they should do. On that day about 3,000 people were saved. When revival comes, people will repent of their sins and trust in Christ for salvation. Persistent prayer, immersed in the Word of God, Gospel Proclamation, and people being saved... this is what revival looks like. OH LORD, SEND US REVIVAL! Pastor Todd 2

THE SUBURBAN CONNECTION Children s Church APRIL 2018 We can t wait to celebrate the resurrection of Christ in children's church on Easter! We hope your children will come home having a better understanding of what Jesus did for each one of them because of His great love. One of our first lessons this month helps us understand that others will know we are Christians because we love one another. Wow! Sometimes that s hard when we have someone who says or does something hurtful. Our love for one another should be so deep that we are willing to lay down our lives for one another just as Jesus did for us. It is this deep, genuine love that will cause the world to understand the reality of the Gospel. SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: Our Suburban Kids Ministry needs YOU! Our year verse tells us that Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. Would you prayerfully consider serving by being a teacher or assistant on Sunday mornings? Blessings are wrapped up in all kinds of packages...sometimes they are children who come to us on Sunday mornings needing an extra hug and the love of Jesus shown to them. Men s Ministry The Saturday Morning Men s Bible Study continues its study of Paul s letter to the church of Rome. The Book of Romans explains that salvation and justification for Jews and Gentiles alike is by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. It reveals the righteousness and steadfast love of God. It represents the clearest and most systematic presentation of Christian theology in the Bible and might be best summed up in Romans 1:16-17: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.for in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, The righteous shall live by faith. Currently, chapters 9 and 10 are being studied as Paul reveals, it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring and declares, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved All men are invited to enjoy good food, good fellowship, and the good news found in God s word at 8:00 am on the first and third Saturday of each month and bring a FRIEND! How have you chosen to serve this year? 3

AYM Ambassador Youth Ministry Where We ve Been: March March was an awesome month! We started a new series called But God. These lessons talk about some of the time the Bible said, but God, and focused on where we are before Christ, but God doesn t leave us in that state. God brings us salvation and we need it. God brought us salvation through the Son, Jesus. Then God gives us community to stay strong. We also made our trip to Raleigh, North Carolina for Winter Jam! It was a long rainy and sometimes snowy drive, but so worth the effort to go. Kari Jobe brought the Spirit in waves and Skillet rocked the house! We are all ready to go again next year. This also pumped us all up to start our own worship band! So many powerful words spoken that night. I know I was on fire for the Lord that night. Then we had the Maundy Thursday service just this past Thursday. Where We Are Going: April We start the month out with a bang! Though technically it is still in March, we also have a bake sale on Saturday, March 31 st, to raise money to go on our mission trip to Houston, Texas. We will have baked goods and Charlotte Law s bread! So, come check out the freshly baked goodies. Easter is the first of the month and this is no joke - HE IS RISEN! The first week of April is spring break for the kids, so no AYM. We will be meeting at Starbucks just across the street to hang out. On the 21 st, we will be visiting Union Mission to help with the homeless and the needy. On the 22 nd, we will be having lunch after church to help raise money for our trips to Exmore and Houston. Come out and support our students! Can t wait to see what God has planned for the upcoming months! God Bless!! We are ambassadors for Christ! 2 Corinthians 5:20

Mothers Day Out Little Lambs As we start into the month of April, we will be on our spring break from April 3 rd through April 6 th. When we come back, we will be finishing up the alphabet and our theme days. On April 12 th, for letter X, there will be a treasure hunt with X marks the spot. The children will go on a hunt around the church to find their little bags of candy coins. On April 14 th, for letter Y, we will all wear yellow that day. On April 27 th we will finish up the alphabet with letter Z. Our theme will be Zebra day and we will all wear stripes. I will also be finishing up Bible Time with the kids as the school year winds down and preparing for Graduation in May. God has truly blessed our program this year. Ms. Liz has 8 children in her 2 ½ - 3 years old class; Ms. Juli has 8 children in her 3-4 years old class and Ms. Gabrielle has 9 children in her 4-5 years old class that will be graduating. Introducing Our New Mother s Day Out Coordinator We are excited to introduce our new Mother s Day Out Coordinator, Andrea Hoover. She is married to Troy and has 2 grown children, Ashlyn and Bryce. After praying for many weeks, Andrea felt led to apply for the position of coordinator. She is coming with 36 years of experience and has a heart for children and loves the Lord. She is planning to build on the program that been established and include music, a P.E. program, include some basic Spanish, and build community relations by establishing simple service projects for the families who are a part of our Mother s Day Out program. She also works in our Suburban Kids ministry in children s church on Sunday mornings. It is now open enrollment for our Mother s Day Out program with openings in all classes. If you would like to stop in for a tour of our facilities and pick up a registration packet or know of someone who would be interested in a Biblically based program, please contact the church office (757) 495-0352. Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such of these. Mark 10:14

THE SUBURBAN CONNECTION Bellamy Women Bellamy women delivered 10 Easter baskets to our shut-in members and as always, they were delighted to receive this special blessing. A BIG thank you to each of you who took time from your busy schedules to assemble and deliver the baskets. APRIL 2018 We are in the planning stages for another event. As soon as we get through the Easter holiday be on the lookout for our next meeting. You will not want to miss it! Union Mission Update On Monday, March 19 th, Mary Ann Hagerty and Sandi Seeloff went to the Women s Shelter at the Union Mission to share a devotion with the ladies living there. The devotion was titled, Contrary Winds in Life. Mary Ann and Sandi began the devotion by reading Luke 8:22-25. They continued by discussing the scene when the disciples and Jesus got into a boat to go to the other side of the lake and a storm came up. What s the lesson here? When you walk against the wind, it pushes you and you must strain to keep walking. Have you ever said to yourself, I am impressed with the wonderful truths of God s Word, but is He in touch with my reality? What do I think about this Jesus in the area of my life that is out of control right now? Does He really care what I m going through right now? Where is He? Our questions begin when we tell Jesus that our circumstances are just a little too difficult for Him. It s easy for us to say, Trust in the Lord, but when we must practice that truth, sometimes it s difficult to do just that TRUST. We have been taught to take charge and make things happen. We like being in charge. It makes us feel good. We seldom have questions or doubts about ourselves and our abilities. However, this way of thinking causes us to question and doubt what God s Word says. This causes us to develop fear. Fear is an emotion that the devil uses to torment. God has said that He has seen the end from the beginning and has promised never to leave us or forsake us, even to the end of the age. He knows all about our sinfulness, and still agrees to take us as His own. He has agreed to watch over us and protect us as long as we continue to confess our sins and strive to live in a way that pleases Him. Our loving Father knows and cares about our struggles, and He invites us to bring our cares, hurts, and fears to Him. The Scriptures tells us in Hebrews 4:15-16, For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. The phrase grace to help in time of need means that in His presence, we can be buckled in peace during threatening times, because we bring our concerns to the One who is greater than all! When life feels overwhelming, we can pray. He will help us through the turbulence. Psalm 46:10 says, Be still, and know that I am God. Crises reveal Character. When we are put to the test, the hidden resources of our character are revealed exactly. Although we cannot anticipate the trial of life, we can pray to our Father who fully understands what we face. Here s the lesson: Let s not limit the ministry of Jesus to the point that He is unable to work in our life. The thing that approaches the very limits of His power is the very thing we as disciples of Jesus ought to believe He will do. He can and will calm the wind and the sea. We impoverish and weaken His ministry in us the moment we forget He is Almighty. The impoverishment is in us, not in Him. We often come to Jesus for Him to be our comforter and our sympathizer, but we refrain from approaching Him as our ALMIGHTY GOD. Recognize that Christ is almighty. There should be abandonment and surrender to Jesus Christ. When we get into difficult circumstances, KNOW that He is the living water and look to Jesus and believe. SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: The Union Mission Women s Shelter needs books to fill their library. If you can help fill this need, please see Mary Ann Hagerty. If you would like to join Mary Ann and Sandi for these Bible studies or get on a list to help with monthly devotions, please contact Wendy at the church office.

Operation Christmas Child Seniors Ministry At our March meeting Bob Grymes lead us on another trip through the Holy Lands. After the meeting we enjoyed a meal of Irish and green dishes. On March 22 the seniors went to the planetarium on the Virginia Beach Tidewater Community College campus for a very interesting program. On the way back, we stopped at Rib City on Princess Anne Road for a delightful lunch. The next monthly meeting will be held Thursday, April 19, at 11:00 A.M. Please watch the Sunday Bulletin and the Seniors Ministry bulletin board for information about the program and the lunch menu. There is a basket full of empty pill bottles in the hallway to help us collect for Operation Christmas Child shipping costs. Take one home, fill it with change, bring it back and repeat until November. Each bottle will hold about $9.00 which will ship one box to a child. WORKDAY COMING: Saturday, April 14 th from 10:00 am 2:00 pm Please join us if you want to make items for the shoebox gifts.
