June 10, 2018 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three From the desk of the Pastor... Thank You Retired Priests! This weekend we take up a Special Collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. As you know well, we have been so blessed to have had and to currently have the benefit of the priestly service of several wonderful retired active priests. We remember with great fondness and gratitude Fr. Tom Enright (Ordination class of 1966) who served so faithfully. And how blessed we are currently to have Fr. Bob Darrow (Ordination class of 1963) and Fr. Andrew Luczak (Ordination class of 1970) who have enabled us to continue to offer two morning Masses every weekday in addition to offering Masses for us on Sundays, assisting with Confessions, offering funeral Masses when I am away, assisting with RCIA, etc. They continue to do such a beautiful job and make much of what we offer possible. We are deeply grateful! Their full schedules are hardly what would be considered retired in other contexts. I am happy to report that after having been without for the past two years, we are to receive a new Associate Pastor who will begin next month. (stay tuned to future bulletins) We hope to lighten some of the load that Frs. Darow and Luczak have been carrying so generously. The normal retirement age for Archdiocesan priests is 70. By the end of June there will be 235 retired Archdiocesan priests who represent nearly one-third of all of the diocesan priests serving in the Archdiocese. Of the 97 priests aged 80 or older, 70 still are active in helping parishes like ours. Of the 131 priests aged 70 to 79, 131 likewise still celebrate Sunday Mass weekly, witness marriages, offer funerals, baptize, and visit the sick. Without these dedicated men, many parishes like ours would not be able to offer the full range of Mass and sacraments that they do. In the last year, 42 priests have received nursing home assistance or full-time aides coming to their home or rectory. The Priest Retirement and Mutual Assistance Association (PRMAA) spends over $2 million dollars annually to provide this kind of care. Spending has increased in providing home care to keep retired priests in the surroundings where they are most comfortable. PRMAA believes that these men who have given their lives in service to the Church should be adequately cared for when their health begins fail. PRMAA uses Catholic facilities whenever it is possible. There are also two independent living residences for retired priests that are subsidized by the Archdiocese. There is space for 28 retired priests to enjoy communal living with their brother priests in retirement. The Special Collection helps subsidize these facilities. As in the cases of Frs. Darow and Luczak, some retired priests are still healthy and live on their own. They rely upon a Priest s Pension Fund for their sustenance. The fund is losing principal and is in need of significant contributions to stabilize and secure this benefit for future generations of priests. As one who is privileged to serve on the Board of the PRMAA, I can assure you that the Archdiocese is committed to caring for our retired priests. We cannot do it without your assistance. Please help and many, many thanks for your generosity. Have a blessed week,
