Called my daughter Hannah, wife of Daniel Wolverton, by her father in his will and bequeathed the sum of 50 to be paid three years after his death. Said to have died 14 July 1819, Mt. Pleasant, OH. F 949 Lucretia⁶, b. 18 Dec 1745, Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ. Bequeathed the sum of 100 by the terms of her fathers will in 1772. However, she probably died unmarried about 1772-73. Many sources erroneously state she married a John Chamberlain of New York. However, it was her niece Lucretia Sutphen, daughter of her sister Anne who married John Chamberlin (her nephew son of her brother Lewis). In the probate record maintained by Derrick Sutphen, co-executor of her father's estate, is the entry: March 1773. Paid Jacob Houghton for coffin for testator and his daughter Lucretia, 3. F 950 Elizabeth⁶, b. 11 Jan 1748, Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ. Married Derrick Hoagland (b. 10 Dec 1745; d. 12 Nov 1827). Called my daughter Elizabeth Hoogeland in her father's will of 29 Apr 1772, which bequeathed her 50 to be paid four years after his death. Died 7 Jan 1829. Nothing further known. Married three times, all probably in Hunterdon Co., NJ; (1) Mary Hagaman, 18 Jan 1773; (2) Sarah Fisher, about 1787; (3) Ann Fisher, about 1792. Died 30 June 1813, Reaville, NJ. + F 952 Anne⁶, b. 13 Apr 1752, Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ. Married Derrick Sutphen, about Nov 1767, probably Hunterdon Co., NJ. Died 15 July 1838, probably Hunterdon Co., NJ. + M 953 Uriah⁶, b. 26 Mar 1755, Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ. Bequeathed 100 of Proclamation money in his father's will of 1772 in which he was to be paid when 21 years of age. (The legacy was paid to him 16 May 1776.) Married Mary Pipenger, by License dated 2 Jan 1773, Reading Town, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Emma Ten-Broeck Runk says her name was Sarah Pettinger. He served as a Sergeant in Capt. Polhemus company, First Regiment, NJ, Continental Line during the Revolutionary war. Uriah was taken prisoner on 27 Aug 1777 and incarcerated in the Sugar House in New York where he died before the end of hostilities in 1783. The authority for this last information is the bible record of his brother Col. William Chamberlin. There appears to be no record of any progeny. Nothing further known. F 954 Rachel⁶, b. 21 Feb 1758, Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ. Married Dr. John Andrew, by License dated 19 Oct 1773, Amwell, NJ. Died 19 Aug 1785, probably Hunterdon Co., NJ. + F 955 Daughter⁶, b. 7 June 1763, Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ. Died there the same day. BIOGRAPHICAL He probably married in Monmouth County and soon afterwards removed to Hunterdon County. In a biographical account of the ninetieth anniversary of the birth of James Prall⁸ Chamberlin [Lewis⁷ ⁶ ⁵] by his son-in-law, Theodore Bellis, on 30 Dec 1915, he stated of his great-grandparents Lewis & Lucretia: Placing all their worldly goods in a cart, and with a good, fat black horse, they found their way over Sourland Mountain and settled in Amwell Valley, along Mallard's Creek [about 1735-6]. When Lewis died in 1772, he owned 350 acres of good land, one-half of it is heavily timbered. It is part of five farms at the present time. This would place his farm in Amwell Township, not far from Flemington, on Mallard's Creek. November 2, 2000 Page 2 of 6

On 14 Sep 1742, Henry Farnsworth deeded land to Lewis Chamberlin of Amwell for 345. (Deed formerly in possession of Theodore Bellis.) He witnessed the deed from his brother John and wife Hannah, and his mother Rebecca to Henry Green on 21 May 1743. (See John⁵ Chamberlin, LN 216.) He joined the Hopewell Baptist Church, 25 Oct 1747 and his death is recorded in the church records in May 1772. His wife Lucretia joined the same church 5 Aug 1749. Lewis Chamberlin, his mother Rebecca Chamberlin, and his cousin William⁴ Chamberlin [William³, John²] were listed as debtors to the estate of George Williams, clothier, whose will was dated 1 Nov 1743, proved 10 Apr 1744. The list of debtors was given in the accounting of the estate on 12 June 1751. (New Jersey Archives, Vol. 30, P. 530; Liber D, P. 174.) On 15 Apr 1755, Lewis Chamberlin, as witness, signed a deed from Christian Koul to his brother Richard Chamberlin, of Amwell, for land in Amwell. On 21 Apr 1768, Lewis Chamberlin of Amwell, was nominated by Governor Franklin to be commissioned a Justice of the Peace. Lewis Chamberlin and Jacob Mattison took inventory of the estate of John Williamson of Amwell, on 26 Aug 1769 (New Jersey Archives, Vol. 33, P. 482, Liber 14, P. 164, Liber 15, P. 499). Lewis Chamberlin and Jacob Mathison took inventory of the estate of William Kirkpatrick of Hunterdon Co., NJ, on 22 Sep 1769 (New Jersey Archives, Vol. 33, P. 235, Liber 14, P. 423). On 27 Mar 1770, His excellency laid before the board, a petition from John Fox and another from John Throckmorton, both of Amwell in the County of Hunterdon, complaining of sundry instances of misbehavior in Lewis Chamberlain, Esquire, one of the justices of the peace in said county, and praying relief from sundry oppressions they have suffered from the judgements of said Lewis Chamberlain. Whereupon his excellency with the advice of the council was pleased to order the deputy secretary to give notice to the said Lewis Chamberlain to appear before the Governor in Council on Wednesday on the 9th of May next to answer the said complaint. (New Jersey Archives, Vol. 18, P. 171.) On 9 May 1770, The board taking into consideration the complaints of John Fox and John Throckmorton exhibited on the 27th day of March last against Lewis Chamberlain, Esquire, one of the justices of the peace in the county of Hunterdon, and the parties being called in and fully heard, the board were unanimously of opinion that the said complaints were by no means supported, and that it did not appear the said justice had acted in anywise inconsistent with his duty as a magistrate in the matters complained of. (New Jersey Archives, Vol. 18, P. 176.) Lewis Chamberlin contributed 0:17:4 to the Neshanic Church and its builders in 1762. (Somerset County, New Jersey, Historical Quarterly, Vol. 7, P. 173.) On 20 Dec 1770, Lewis Chamberlin and Thomas James took inventory of the estate of Nicholas Ott, of Hunterdon Co., NJ. (New Jersey Archives, Vol. 34, P. 374; Liber 15, P. 106.) Lewis Chamberlin made his will on 29 Apr 1772, proved 18 May 1772. The text of his will reads as follows: In the name of God Amen, I Lewis Chamberlin of the Township of Amwell, in the County of Hunterdon in the Western Division of the Province of New Jersey, yeoman, being sicke and weak of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory, praise be therefore given unto Almighty God for the same do make and ordain this my present Last Will and Testament in manner and form following, (that is to say): First and principally I commit my Soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it and my Body to the earth to be buried at the Discretion of my Executors hereafter named and as touching the disposition of all such temporal estates as it hath pleased Almighty God to bestow upon me, I give and dispose thereof in way and manner following: Item: I will that all my just debts and funeral charges to be honorably & justly paid & discharged. She had been a member of the Baptist Church at Amwell for 70 years. The Providence Phoenix in its issue of 15 Feb 1812, under deaths, says: Mrs. Lucretia Chamberlin, at Amwell, NJ., aged 103 years. Her husband Lewis died about 50 years ago. [Her age at the time of her death was 98 years, according to the family bible of Lewis and Lucretia.
