Rejoicing in the House of the Lord! June 10, 2018 WELCOME TO GOD S HOUSE May we together glory in the cross of Christ. A PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP O God, forsake me not! Your gracious presence lend me; Lord, lead your helpless child; your Holy Spirit send me that I my course may run. Oh, be my light, my lot, my staff, my rock, my shield O God, forsake me not! Amen. (See prayers on pages 10-11 of Christian Worship.) SERVICE THEME We rejoice in God s gift of music. Psalm 122:1 June 10, 2018 M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. CONFESSION OF SINS M: Beloved in the Lord; let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. 1

LORD, HAVE MERCY Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. M: God our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. SONG OF PRAISE 2 Oh, that I Had a Thousand Voices Hymn 242 v 1-3 Oh, that I had a thousand voices To praise my God with thousand tongues! My heart, which in the Lord rejoices, Would then proclaim in grateful songs To all, wherever I might be, What great things God has done for me. O forest leaves, so green and tender, That dance for joy in summer air, O meadow grasses, bright and slender, O flow rs, so wondrous sweet and fair, You live to show his praise alone; With me now make his glory known. All creatures that have breath and motion, That fill the earth, the sea, and sky, Now join me in my heart s devotion; Help me to raise his praises high. My utmost pow rs can never quite Express the wonders of his might. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Let us pray. Dearest Lord, you have graciously bestowed upon us the gift of music. Continue to bless and strengthen your church through your sacred Word as it is carried into our hearts and minds through the melodies and beautiful sounds of instruments and voices. We ask this in the name of our beautiful Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE WORD OF GOD LESSON 1 Chronicles 15:1-2; 14-28; 16:1-6 God s Old Testament people took great care and paid attention to detail in giving glory to the LORD through music. After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it. 2 Then David said, No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever. 14 So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel. 15 And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD. 16 David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their brothers as singers to sing joyful songs, accompanied by musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals. 17 So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel; from his brothers, Asaph son of Berekiah; and from their brothers the Merarites, Ethan son of Kushaiah; 18 and with them their brothers next in rank: Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel, the gatekeepers. 19 The musicians Heman, Asaph and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals; 20 Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah and Benaiah were to play the lyres according to alamoth, 21 and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel and Azaziah were to play the harps, directing according to sheminith. 22 Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it. 23 Berekiah and Elkanah were to be doorkeepers for the ark. 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah and Eliezer the 3

priests were to blow trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-Edom and Jehiah were also to be doorkeepers for the ark. 25 So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. 26 Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD, seven bulls and seven rams were sacrificed. 27 Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the singers, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod. 28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouts, with the sounding of rams horns and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps. 1 They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and they presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before God. 2 After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD. 3 Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each Israelite man and woman. 4 He appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, to make petition, to give thanks, and to praise the LORD, the God of Israel: 5 Asaph was the chief, Zechariah second, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel. They were to play the lyres and harps, Asaph was to sound the cymbals, 6 and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow the trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God. PSALM 150 4 5

SECOND LESSON Colossians 3:15-17 God s Word and song have always gone hand in hand. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. VERSE OF THE DAY M: Alleluia. Alleluia. Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. Alleluia. C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! M: The gospel according to St. Luke, chapter two. C: Glory be to you, O Lord! GOSPEL Luke 2:8-14 The holy angels welcomed the birth of our Savior with the Gloria in Excelsis Deo. 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests. APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY When in Our Music God is Glorified Kari Freiberg soloist for verses 1 & 2 Hymn 248 SERMON Psalm 150:1-6 Praise the LORD.
