WELCOME IN THE NAME OF JESUS! LIVING SAVIOR LUTHERAN CHURCH welcomes you as you join with us in worship this day. May the Holy Spirit bless you with the message you hear from God s Word, the prayers, the hymns, and the fellowship we share with you. Here is some information you might find helpful: A Nursery/Family Room is in the Family Life Center next to the offices. The service can be viewed and heard in there through a closed circuit screen. Restrooms are located in the Family Life Center. Please fill out attendance note pad in pews and place your sheet in the offering plate or hand to an usher. We ask guests and members to fill them out each week. Please let us know if we can help you in any way. HOLY COMMUNION: We are very glad that you have joined us today for this worship service where we hear the Word of God and receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. This church is in fellowship with other congregations of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. As such, we believe and practice the biblical teaching that we receive the true Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in, with and under the bread and the wine of the Sacrament (Matthew 26, Mark 14 and Luke 22). If you have a different understanding of Communion or are still learning about this biblical teaching, we love you enough to ask you not to receive Holy Communion this morning (1 Corinthians 11). However, you are welcome to come forward for a blessing at the time of Communion. If later you have any questions about this or any other teachings, the pastor would be very pleased to talk with you. STRIVE! FOR WE WHO BELIEVE WILL ENTER GOD S REST Our Creator has woven the gift of rest into the fabric of His creation. If God Himself enjoyed His day of rest, His Sabbath, shouldn t we? Rest isn t a good work that we do to please God. Rest is the absence of our work; it s receiving the grace that is offered to us through Christ s work on the cross of Good Friday and the empty tomb of Easter. Today our gracious Father invites us to enter into His rest, His Sabbath, sharing in the benefits of what His Son has done. Jesus has already done the work savor it! Rest in His presence as He serves you with His living and active Word and as He prepares His Table of grace for you to enjoy. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC (Hymns for today s worship will be played.) RINGING OF THE BELLS (Please take time now to fill out the attendance record book located in the pew and place it in the offering plate later in the service.) CALL TO WORSHIP (ALL): GOD HIMSELF IS PRESENT LSB 907 1 God Himself is present: Let us now adore Him And with awe appear before Him. God is in His temple; All within keep silence; Humbly kneel in deepest rev rence. He alone On His throne Is our God and Savior; Praise His name forever! 2 God Himself is present: Hear the harps resounding; See the hosts the throne surrounding. Holy, holy, holy! Hear the hymn ascending, Songs of saints and angels blending. Bow Your ear To us here: Hear, O Christ, the praises That Your Church now raises. OPENING SENTENCES Hebrews 4:9 10 There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God s rest has also rested from his works as God did from His. OPENING HYMN: FAITH OF OUR FATHERS Frederick W. Faber 1 Faith of our fathers, living still, In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword; Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy Whene er we hear that glorious Word! Refrain: Faith of our fathers, holy faith! We will be true to thee till death! 2 Faith of our fathers, we will strive to win all nations unto thee; And through the truth that comes from God, we all shall then be truly free. 3

Refrain: Faith of our fathers, holy faith! We will be true to thee till death! 3 Faith of our fathers, we will love Both friend and foe in all our strife; And preach thee, too, as love knows how By kindly words and virtuous life. Refrain CALL FOR CONFESSION (Please be Seated) Matthew 11:28 Today our Father invites us to enter into His presence and experience the gift of His rest. Let us come before Him in repentance and faith. (Silence for meditation upon God s Word and our need for Christ s forgiveness.) Holy God, merciful Father, too often we pull away from the peace You promise to Your children. Forgive us for the ways in which our thoughts, our words, and our actions go against Your will for our lives. For our neglect of You and Your gift of grace, we ask for mercy. In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, whose work on the cross has secured our place in Your kingdom, renew us and lead us that we may rest in Your presence. Amen. LORD, HAVE MERCY Mark 10:47 GOD FORGIVES OUR SINS Jesus says, Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Receive the rest for your souls that only Jesus work has secured. As your pastor, I announce God s saving grace to you and, in the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST Luke 2:14; John 1:29 Glory be to God on high. 4

GREETING The Lord be with you. And also with you. 5

PRAYER OF THE DAY O God, our Creator, You set in order all things in heaven and on earth for the benefit of Your children. Grant that we rest from our labors and receive the peace Your Son has given; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS WORD GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS PROPHET Ecclesiastes 5:10 20 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep. There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand. As he came from his mother s womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand. This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind? Moreover, all his days he eats in darkness in much vexation and sickness and anger. Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil this is the gift of God. For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart. Lector: AS THE DEER Chorus: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Martin Nystrom As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after Thee. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship Thee. You alone are my strength, my shield; to You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship Thee. I want you more than gold or silver, only You can satisfy. You alone are the real joy-giver, and the apple of my eye. Chorus 1984 MARANATHA PRAISE, USED BY PERMISSION CCLI LICENSE 3 2667886 GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS APOSTLE Hebrews 4:1 11 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said, As I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter my rest, although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: And God rested on the seventh day from all his works. And again in this passage he said, They shall not enter my rest. 6

Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, again he appoints a certain day, Today, saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS SON Mark 10:23 31 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the tenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, Then who can be saved? Jesus looked at them and said, With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God. Peter began to say to him, See, we have left everything and followed you. Jesus said, Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first. CHILDREN S MESSAGE This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. HYMN OF THE DAY: COME UNTO ME, YE WEARY LSB 684 1 Come unto Me, ye weary, And I will give you rest. O blessèd voice of Jesus, Which comes to hearts oppressed! It tells of benediction, Of pardon, grace, and peace, Of joy that hath no ending, Of love that cannot cease. 3 Come unto Me, ye fainting, And I will give you life. O cheering voice of Jesus, Which comes to aid our strife! The foe is stern and eager, The fight is fierce and long; But Thou hast made us mighty And stronger than the strong. 4 And whosoever cometh, I will not cast him out. O patient love of Jesus, Which drives away our doubt, Which, though we be unworthy Of love so great and free, Invites us very sinners To come, dear Lord, to Thee! Public domain 7

GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH OUR PASTOR: OUR NEED FOR REST IN GOD Hebrews 4:1-11 WE CONFESS OUR FAITH USING THE WORDS OF THE NICENE CREED (Please stand.) All: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into Heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH (Please be Seated) Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. For the advancement of Christ s kingdom, that we be strong in the Lord and strive to enter into His rest and share this rest with others, let us pray to the Lord. Lord of the Sabbath, let us rest in You. For all pastors, teachers, musicians, missionaries, and other servants of the Church, that their work be a reflection of Christ, whose work enables us to have peace and joy, let us pray to the Lord. Lord of the Sabbath, let us rest in You. For all who serve in positions of leadership in our government, along with those who wear the uniform of our country, that our Savior, upon whose shoulders the government rests, grant them wisdom, comfort, and satisfaction in their labors, let us pray to the Lord. Lord of the Sabbath, let us rest in You. For all who are broken in body, mind, and spirit, [especially...], that the Lord would bind up their wounds and grant them full healing, let us pray to the Lord. Lord of the Sabbath, let us rest in You. Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy and grace, for the sake of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. 8

This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.
