Bishop Wordsworth s School FOUNDER'S DAY Saturday 9 July 2016 Salisbury Cathedral

We warmly welcome you to this year s Founder s Day Service. A Prayer from the 1890 Order of Service for Founders, Benefactors and Worthies, compiled by Bishop John Wordsworth. O God of our fathers, who hast given us grace to meet together this day to commemorate the mercies which Thou hast shown forth in this Thy house from generation to generation: hearken we beseech Thee to the supplications of Thy servants; and grant that all who in the coming year shall enter this house to seek a blessing from Thee may feel with joy that Thou hast heard their prayers and granted their requests according to Thy perfect love and wisdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen A Prayer from the 1944 Altar Book for the Commemoration of the Founder Make us, O Lord, the instruments of thy will. Where there is hatred, let us bring understanding; where there is despair, let us bring hope, where there is suffering let us bring relief; where there is discord let us bring harmony; where there is ignorance let us bring knowledge; and may our souls, our minds and our bodies be dedicated entirely and absolutely to thy service. Amen Organ music before the service Prelude in E J S Bach Petite Piece Jongen Prelude and Fugue in C J S Bach pieces before the service played by Arthur Pallecaros, Organ Scholar

ORDER OF SERVICE The congregation remains seated as the Choir and Clergy process along the south aisle to the west door. The Choir sings the Introit. Surely the Lord is in this place C Fay Please stand as the organ fanfare sounds as a prelude to the opening hymn. PROCESSIONAL HYMN Christ triumphant, ever reigning. Saviour, Master, King! Lord of heaven, our lives sustaining, hear us as we sing: Yours the glory and the crown, the high renown, the eternal name. Word incarnate, truth revealing Son of man on earth! power and majesty concealing by your humble birth: Yours the glory.. Suffering servant, scorned, ill-treated, victim crucified! death is through the cross defeated, sinners justified: Yours the glory.. Priestly king, enthroned for ever high in heaven above! sin and death and hell shall never stifle hymns of love: Yours the glory.. So, our hearts and voices raising through the ages long, ceaselessly upon you gazing, this shall be our song: Yours the glory.. Music: John Barnard Words: Michael Saward Please remain standing

OPENING RESPONSES AND BIDDING PRAYER The Revd Canon Edward Probert, Canon Chancellor Blessed are you, Lord God, King of the Universe. You have given us a share in the inheritance of the saints in light. One generation shall praise your works to another and shall declare your power. You have granted us life and steadfast love, and your care has preserved our spirit. We praise you, O God, and we bless you; for your mercy endures for ever. On this Founder s Day, we come together to offer our thanks to God for the work of John Wordsworth and for his vision in establishing his School: for its continuance, for the service of its staff, past and present, for the boys who are its being and its purpose and for all those who have passed through its doors to serve the wider community. As we prepare to join in these acts of worship and praise, we remember the many blessings bestowed by God upon our School through past years. As we offer our thanks for all his goodness to us and to our predecessors, and ask for guidance in the years to come, we pray that he will help us to realise his presence, respond to his love and live our lives to his praise and glory. We gather all our prayers and thanksgivings together, saying: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen The congregation sits

READING Yvan Chambers Cathedral Prefect The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth Luke 4.16-21 When Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the Captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favour. And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. They he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. CHOIR ANTHEM My soul, there is a country from Songs of Farewell C H H Parry My soul, there is a country Far beyond the stars, Where stands a wingèd sentry skilful in the wars: There, above noise and danger Sweet Peace sits crowned with smiles And One, born in a manger Commands the beauteous files. He is thy gracious friend And, O my soul, awake! Did in pure love descend To die here for thy sake. If thou canst get but thither, There grows the flow r of Peace, The Rose that cannot wither, Thy fortress and thy ease. Leave then thy foolish ranges, For not can thee secure But One who never changes, Thy God, thy life, thy cure.

READING Mr Martyn White Old Wordsworthians Association Extract from The Drum Major Instinct Sermon Martin Luther King Every now and then I think of my own death, and I think about my own funeral. Every now and then I ask myself, What is it that I want said? I d like somebody to mention that day, that Martin Luther King Junior tried to give his life serving others. I d like somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King Junior tried to love somebody. I want you to say on that day that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say on that day, that I did try to feed the hungry. And I want you to be able to say that day, that I did try, in my life, to clothe those who were naked. I want you to say on that day that I did try in my life to visit those who were in prison. I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. The congregation stands HYMN Angel-voices ever singing round thy throne of light, angel-harps for ever ringing, rest not day or night; thousands only live to bless thee and confess thee Lord of might. Thou who art beyond the farthest mortal eye can scan, can it be that thou regardest songs of sinful man? Can we know that thou art near us, and wilt hear us? Yea, we can. Yea, we know that thou rejoicesto'er each work of thine; thou didst ears and hands and voices for thy praise design; craftsman's art and music's measure for thy pleasure all combine. In thy house, great God, we offerof thine own to thee; and for thine acceptance proffer all unworthily hearts and minds and hands and voices in our choicest psalmody.

Honour, glory, might, and merit thine shall ever be, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, blessed Trinity. Of the best that thou hast given earth and heaven render thee. Music: E G Monk Words: F Pott The congregation sits ADDRESS The Right Reverend Peter Price, former Bishop of Bath and Wells and member of the House of Lords Peter Price today chairs Conciliation Resources and International Peace Building NGO, and is committed to conflict resolution and peace making. He has undertaken this work in Northern Ireland, Central America, Iraq and in Africa. He is a published author, and has also reported for the BBC World Service. In the church he has served in a variety of different parishes, as well as being Director of one of the Anglican Communion s International Mission and Development agencies. He was awarded the Coventry Cross of Nails for his work in reconciliation. The congregation stands HYMN For all the saints who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesu, be for ever blest. eluia, eluia! Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might; thou, Lord, their Captain, in the well-fought fight; thou in the darkness still their one true light. eluia, eluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph-song, and hearts are brave again and arms are strong. eluia, eluia! From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost. eluia, eluia! THE PRAYERS The Chaplain Almighty God, to whose glory we celebrate this anniversary of the foundation and life of this school; deepen our faith, extend our vision, and draw us together in your love, as we seek to do your will and fulfil your purposes for the world, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Chaplain Chaplain Chaplain Chaplain Chaplain Let us give thanks to Almighty God for his blessings to us. For the life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ; for the precious gift of the Holy Spirit and for the promise of eternal life; let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. For those among us who are about to take their place in a wider world, for the part they have played in the School and for the concern and service we trust they will give to their fellow men and women in after years; let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. For this School; for its students, for all members of staff, governors and benefactors; for all that encourages goodness, truth and integrity in this place; let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. Especially on this day we thank God for the life and work of John Wordsworth; for his courage and zeal in establishing the School; for his generosity and foresight in planning and building it; for his loving care for its growth and well-being; let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. Let us remember with thanksgiving at this time those from this School who have died during this year, and among them: Tony Ferguson, John Gay, John Rawlins, Rodney Walker, Barry Wagg and Sue Cooper.

O Eternal Lord God, who holdest all souls in life, we beseech thee to shed forth upon thy whole Church in Paradise and on earth the bright beams of thy light and heavenly comfort; and grant that we, following the good example of those who have loved and served Thee here and are now at rest, may at the last enter with them into the fullness of Thine unending joy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen (A prayer of John Wordsworth) The Choir sings Requiem Aeternum by H W Carpenter, former Chaplain of Bishop Wordsworth s School. Rest eternal grant to them O Lord; and may light perpetual shine upon them. Rest eternal grant to them. Candles in memory of those remembered here today were lit before the service at one of the prayer stands in the Trinity Chapel at the east end of the Cathedral. The congregation stands The Bishop THE REDEDICATION Mindful of those who have gone before, and of the inheritance entrusted to us, let us rededicate ourselves to the service of God, and of our fellow men and women, as we say together: O God our Father, we commit ourselves to you in reverence and obedience; may we seek the truth you reveal, and show forth in our lives the compassion and love you display in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

THE BLESSING The Choir sings Gaelic Blessing May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again may God hold you in the palm of his hand. HYMN Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided, urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way, sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided, Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today. Lord, for that word, the word of life which fires us speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze, teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us: Lord of the word, receive your people's praise. Lord, for our world where we disown and doubt him, loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain, hungry and helpless, lost indeed without him: Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign. Lord for ourselves; in living power remake us - self on the cross and Christ upon the throne, past put behind us, for the future take us: Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone. Music: Michael Baughen Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith Please remain standing until the Bishop s Procession and the Choir have left the nave. Music after the Service Imperial March - Elgar
