Worship Service Prelude Introit Gentle Mary Laid Her Child Children s Choir Welcome and Announcements Ministry Minute Pastor Barry Elder Steve Bird Call to Worship Isaiah 62:10-12 *Gathering Hymn God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen #160 Confession of Faith The Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, being very and eternal God, of one substance and equal with the Father, did, when the fullness of time was come, take upon Himself man's nature, with all the essential properties, and common infirmities thereof, yet without sin; being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the virgin Mary, of her substance. So that two whole, perfect, and distinct natures, the Godhead and the manhood, were inseparably joined together in one person, without conversion, composition, or confusion. Which person is very God, and very man, yet one Christ, the only Mediator between God and man. -Westminster Confession of Faith, XIII.II Confession of Sin God of love, all year long we pursue power and money, yet You came in weakness. All season long we covet great material gifts, when You alone offer what is lasting. Through the work of our Lord Jesus, who is full of grace and truth, forgive us, heal us, form us into Your image. Open our lips, that we may sing Your praise with the angels. Give us boldness, that we may be witness to Your transforming love, through Christ, our Lord. Amen. Assurance of Pardon Matthew 1:21 Invocation Please turn off or silence your cell phone. For small children who need it, we invite you to the room designed for them at the rear of the older sanctuary. *Those who are able please stand.

*Hymn of Praise It Came Upon the Midnight Clear Praise Team It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven's all-gracious King." The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heavenly music floats o'er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains, they bend on hovering wing, and ever o'er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing. And ye, beneath life's crushing load, whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow, look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing. O rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing! For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophet seen of old, when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and the whole world send back the song which now the angels sing.

*Hymn of Praise O Holy Night Praise Team O holy night! the stars are brightly shining; It is the night of the dear Savior's birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope - the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn! Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night, O holy night, O night divine! Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here came the Wise Men from Orient land. The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger, In all our trials born to be our Friend. He knows our need-- to our weakness is no stranger. Behold your King, before him lowly bend! Behold your King, before him lowly bend! Truly he taught us to love one another; His law is love and his gospel is peace. Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother, And in his name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we; Let all within us praise his holy name. Christ is the Lord! O praise his name forever! His pow'r and glory evermore proclaim! His pow'r and glory evermore proclaim! His pow'r and glory evermore proclaim! *Reading of Scripture Luke 2:1-21 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to

give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased! 15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us. 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. 21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. FOCUS ON MISSIONS Chris Garriott RUF @ U of MD, Main Campus This week s campus ministries focus is on Chris Garriott's work at the University of MD, at their main campus, with RUF. Chris has served there 11 years as the RUF Campus Minister. As you have heard from his brother Chuck, he grew up at Liberty Church and was active in Young Life at Randallstown High School. After attending Geneva College he worked as a traffic engineer for 5 years. From there he felt God's call to ministry and attended Covenant Seminary. While there he learned about the Gospel of grace and racial reconciliation. After graduating, he was involved in teaching Bible at a Christian school and youth ministry at his brother's church before coming to RUF at the University of Maryland. Reformed University Fellowship is a community of students that exist to love and serve God and the University of Maryland. Their goal is to help students come to understand, know, and follow Jesus Christ as they walk through their college years, and to help lay a foundation for a lifetime of following Jesus and serving him in all areas of life. RUF has been at UMD for over 15 years. RUF-UMD has a number of ministries. Large Group meetings with free dinner with friends, music and worship, and Bible teaching

occur every Wednesday. There are Small Group Bible discussions that also meet weekly. RUF-MD joins other RUF Chapters in the Mid- Atlantic region for Fall and Summer conferences catered to apply the Gospel to all of life. They have taken mission trips both locally and internationally serving the church in places like D.C., New York City, New Orleans, Guanauto, Mexico and Lima, Peru. Pray for RUF at U of MD Pray for spiritual growth and wisdom for Chris Garriott as he leads his RUF team and ministers the Gospel to students at University of Maryland at College Park. Pray for students to come to know their Savior and grow in their faith through the RUF meeting opportunities and from one on one times together with Chris, staffers, and other Christians. Pray for continued healing of Chris' neck pain. Help Chris as he continues to nurture his musical gifts.
