LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Alert bank staff detects forgery and saves my hardearned money Sir, Last October, I had requisitioned a cheque book from my banker Indian Bank (Arya Gowda Road branch). The bank informed me that they will send the cheque book by post to my address in Kodambakkam. However, even after a number of days when I did not receive the cheque book by post, I approached the bank and was issued a fresh cheque book across the counter. Nine months later, one fine morning, the bank manager called me to verify if I had issued a cheque for Rs. 3,500 to a beneficiary as there was a difference in signature. I said no and immediately visited the branch and it was found that the cheque leaf was from the cheque book which had gone missing in post 9 months ago. The manager also instructed his staff to invalidate the remaining cheque numbers from the stolen cheque book from my account on the computer so that the cheques cannot be misused. I thanked the manager and his staff for their efficiency and saving my hard earned money from a fraudster. V. Shoddy storm water drain work on Lake View Road Sir, I am a resident of Lake View Road (West Mambalam). I wish to give some details regarding the pathetic way in which the storm water drain reconstruction work is progressing on our road: 1. The contractor does not coordinate with the Metrowater authorities and has damaged the sewage and water lines in a number of places during digging. 2. Parts of the newly laid storm water drain are clogged with mud and debris. Leaking sewage water has stagnated in the drain thereby leading to awful stench throughout the day. It has also become a health hazard as it is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. 3. In spite of complaints to the contractor, he did not bother to repair the damage caused by his workers to the sewage and water lines. Even Metrowater officials did not heed our complaints. 4. I spent nearly Rs. 8000 from my pocket to temporarily plug the leakages in the sewage and Metrowater pipeline to my house. 5. The road is uneven in a number of places including in front of my house and has not been leveled even after laying of the drains.
