The Good News - St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Troy Page 5 Happy Mother s Day! As I try to write words that will so eloquently describe what mother means, the Blessed Mother gives us the clearest and most inspiring picture of what that should be. Mary embodies the very essence of Motherhood; all we need do is look and take our cues from her. Mary stood by her child throughout life, when things went wrong or got bad, she knew she could not alter the course of tragic events that were to take place; but she was there to give love, support, and comfort in all ways. I think of my own mother and cannot put into words how much she is, how much she was, and will always be to me, her love was unending and unconditional. Somehow words just are not big enough - thoughts of love and gratitude can never seem to measure up, can they? But we hold in our own hearts the fullness of our own mothers, the fullness of what it means to be a mother, and the completeness we feel as we grow into older mothers, or antique little girls! God in His infinite wisdom has made us all similar but unique to who we are. Mother is the essence of true love and true compassion. Whether you are a soccer mom, lunch mom, single mom, the go-to mom, neighborhood mom, pet mom, mom to Congratulations to the following young people from our Grade 2, Sacrament Prep, and Spanish Sacrament Prep Religious Education programs who celebrated their first Eucharist this past Saturday: Mia A, Christian A, Leonardo A, Guilherme B, Kira B, Michael B, Grace B, Jackson B, Sophia B, Scott B, Claire B, Noelle C, Maria Jose C, Penelope C, Olivia C, Andrea D, Aubrey D, Yandel D, Yareli D, Luca D, Lillie D, Liam E, Maureen F, Anna F, Valeria G, Anna G, Ethan G, Federica G, Andrew G, Shawn H, Tyson I, Alex J, Morgan K, Fiona K, John L, Naya L, Jaden M, Nayely M, Julian N, Colin O, Edgar R, Ana R, Jonathan S, Adam S, Danikka S, and Landon T. We are so excited about this Sacramental step in your journey of faith! Don t wait to celebrate your 2nd Communion! The Religious Education Staff This month, the first Eucharist banners will be displayed in the Gathering Space. These banners have symbols that each child felt reflected the Sacrament for them personally. Please take a moment to enjoy them, and pray for each of our St. A s kids who have received Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time this year! strangers, clearly the definitive answer to Mom is not necessarily biological. A Mom is a mom without question of who you are or, who is in need. A Mom is a mom when a gentle touch brings comfort, a single sparkle in her eye can take away pain, and her smile brings you home. As we wish you a beautiful Mother s Day, let us stand beside our Blessed Mother Mary. Live in such a way that, those who know you but don t know God, will come to know God because they know you. Happy of Mother s Day to you all! Regina Simony Adult Faith & RCIA Coordinator

The Good News - St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Troy Page 7 All Things Catholic, By Fr. Greg Piatt The Ascension calls us to live in Christ so He can live in us Today the Catholic Church celebrates Jesus Christ s returning to the Father in Heaven, in the mysterious Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord. However, the Church does not focus on Jesus leaving as if it were a going-away celebration. Instead, the Church focuses on how Christ remains with us and provides for us the tools necessary for this life and the life to come through the Church and its sacraments so Christians can embrace Christ s divine plan for us. Dear brothers and sisters, the Ascension does not point to Jesus' absence, but tells us that He is alive in our midst in a new way, Pope Francis said on his first Ascension as pope in 2013, according to the Vatican website. He is no longer in a specific place in the world as He was before the Ascension, the pope said. He is now in the lordship of God, present in every space and time, close to each one of us. In our life, we are never alonethe Crucified and Risen Lord guides us. Pope Benedict XVI in 2009 explained the joy of the Ascension when he described what is Heaven. Heaven does not indicate a place above the stars but something far more daring and sublime: it indicates Christ Himself, the divine Person who welcomes humanity fully and forever, the One in whom God and man are inseparably united forever, the emeritus pope said, according to the Vatican website. Man's being in God, this is Heaven. And we draw close to Heaven, indeed, we enter Heaven to the extent that we draw close to Jesus and enter into communion with Him. In 1979, Pope St. John Paul II urged us to renew this communion with the Son of the living God. Realize that the strength of Christ is greater than our weakness, greater than the weakness of the whole world, the late Polish pope said. Renew your faith today in the promise of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has gone to prepare a place for us" Vatican II tells us that Jesus was a gift to us from the Father. Jesus gift to us is the Church and its seven sacraments. The Ascension does not mark the end of Jesus' relationship with us but through the Church and its sacraments the beginning of a new way of His relating to us. You see, Jesus loves us so much that He entrusted His Church into the hands of broken and sinful people. Even through poor, weak, folks like us, Christ can inhabit us and act through our bodies, minds, hearts, and through the Church. For as we approach the Risen and Ascended Christ, we approach Heaven through the sacraments. Christ gave us the sacraments as channels of grace. It's why Christ gave us the Mass and the Eucharist so we could receive His Body and Blood as spiritual food to sustain us on our journey. He also then lives in us when we receive Holy Communion. His living presence remains in us so we can be Christ for others. The mysterious Solemnity of the Ascension reminds us that Christ accepts us as sinners, but He calls and asks us to repent and to love God. And then, He gives us an eternal commission to believe and preach the Gospel, to be His people the Body of Christ and He commands us to love others and serve them. If we entrust our life to Him, if we let ourselves be guided by Him, we are certain to be in safe hands, in the hands of our Savior, our Advocate, Pope Francis said. To ask a question or comment, email Fr. Greg at: gpiatt@stanastasia.org Stephen Ministry Many members of our parish are familiar with Stephen Ministry, but as a reminder for some and new information for others, Stephen Ministry is one-on-one, Christian care-giving to anyone who could use a listening ear while going through life s struggles. The attraction to Stephen Ministry for me was an opportunity to deploy my experience in a new and different mode. While I felt honored to provide that distinctively Christian service to those who need what we do, equally important was the gratification I sensed, knowing that the Holy Spirit was working through me to give the care I learned in class and in peer supervision. Most recently, I ve found that a deep relationship of trust has developed between me and one of my care receivers. It s truly an unexpected friendship that has blossomed. I am truly blessed to participate in Stephen Ministry, and recommend that others consider the opportunity to serve. We are seeking new students to begin classes in the fall, once a week on Monday nights. For more information, please contact Kim Houseman at 248-689-8380, Ext. 112. James M. Knaus

St. Anastasia Grad Mass, 4571 John R, Troy MI 48085 Dear Parish Family, It is with utmost gratitude we send this note to every one of you for your thoughts, words, condolences, love and prayers especially your prayers. It is the many prayers surrounding us, uplifting us, that have carried us through this, the initial phase of our mourning the loss of our son, brother, and uncle, Kenneth Hernandez. Please keep on praying for us. We especially want to thank Fr. Greg Piatt for celebrating an exceptionally uplifting Mass and giving a homily that lifted Ken s name up off the page and reaffirmed his life for all who knew and loved him. To Evelyn Schuette, dedicated music director, whose love flowed through her music; Cliff Erickson, dear and devoted friend who offered his gift of music; cantor, Ann Johnson, whose melodious voice prayed the Litany of Saints (including our family s personal patron saints); and the devoted choir for releasing a love that poured through the music in a way that reached into every heart and soul joined together at Mass. To Holly Michelcavage, our sojourner, who walked this part of our life s journey offering every ounce of energy and love within her beautiful soul. Each one of you gave your all for us to impact on our souls an indelible memory of the loving farewell for one who loved each of us in his own special way. One last thought from Ken s mom, Carolyn: As days passed and the funeral drew near, a thought kept recurring it s like I could hear God telling Ken, Ok Ken, I m giving you one last hurrah for evangelizing. You keep praying that your loved ones family and friends be touched by the outpouring of love shown during these days of farewell. You pray that your parish family be a catalyst, planting a seed within those present at this time a seed that will grow into a desire to have and experience what this community has in their life. May the word of God, Himself, become alive as revealed in the Gospel of John 13:35, By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. (I believe you did a good job, my fellow parishioners). You showed love in a big way! God bless you all. ~ Thank you from the Hernandez Family Faith and Fellowship Opportunities for those 18-35. Our Varsity teams (7th and 8th grade) will be reviewing the basics, as well as learning how to attack and block an attack. We will be teaching some more advanced court strategies and positions as well as how to respond to the skills of our competition.
